Like to see the old $art. Been, I believe early 71 sence I've seen him. Jimmy built a 350 chevy engine for a 68 chevy for us back in those days. Dave Boartman fixed that record for us. John, is Tony Conte still around? Thanks for the info.... Frank

I just spent a few days with Jimmy Waibel at his house and attended the P R I Show with him. He does in deed have his first Smothers Brothers Olds and has intensions of restoring it. In the guest bedroom that I stayed in there were 3 Smothers Bros. Racing Team Jackets hanging in the closet.

Jimmy and his wife Margret are great people and I always look foreward to my visits with them each year.

Yes, we do still have the car and yes we are currently looking for help and even potential sponsors to help get this car restored! It needs ALOT of work.. anyone with ideas please feel free to contact us!! We need all the help we can get. As all of you know Jimmy is getting up there in age and we would like to get this done sooner rather than later - As I would love to see him with it at the track as a show car!!!

We also have a picture of the Smothers Brothers Jacket! My son spent the night over at the house and thought it was the coolest thing when his grandpa let him wear the jacket!!!! He was on cloud nine!!!! If anyone has good pictures that have logos in them please forward to us so that we can make sure that we get it all right..

I believe the Olds that Buddy Ingersoll raced in Super Stock, in the 70's, was Jim Waibel's old Smothers Brothers car, Correct me if I am wrong!

Re: Smothers Brothers cars?

As an Olds enthusiast, I think the last Smothers Brothers car that Jim Waibel drove was a red '69 Olds. The Super Stocker that Buddy Ingersoll raced was a white '72 model, however, I think it may have been one of Jim Waibel's previous cars since the striping it had was identical to another Olds stocker that Waibel raced. I'm sure someone that frequents this forum knows for sure.

Re: Smothers Brothers cars?

I think Eddie is correct. The one Buddy bought was not not a Smothers Bros car.

The car that Buddy had (white/blue '71/'72) was Jim's car at one point, but not the SB car....
I have pictures of the 72 U.S. Nats with Jimmy driving the white/blue car...

Re: Smothers Brothers cars?

The 69 Smothers Brothers car (red one with yellow stripes - Kings Olds W31 convertible ) was the first year of SB.

Year 2 was a 70 Olds pure white hard top because Dick and Tom had to pull Logos off car bc of problems on TV. This is what ended the program.

1971 - received a brand new car from Dale Smith at Olds. This was a factory backed car. This is what started the fish scale paint job. Dad actually painted this car and used one piece of cardboard at a time to make the paint job - at this point it was still running in Stock
End of 71 Season instead of sending new car, they sent a conversion package to Dad. This turned this car into a Super Stock / O car
for the 72 season

At the end of 72 season, this is when Dad sold this car to Buddy.
He then went on into the Super Modified Division with the 67 Camaro.

We still have the 71 hood for the fish scale car. As well as having the 69 convertible.

Interesting story on the paint. That white 71 is the car later raced by Buddy Ingersoll?
I had to think for a minute and then I figured out the cars you were talking about.

Al,,, I don't have a lot of Olds photos,, but I went back through my boxes and found these.
Photos 1&2: A couple shots of Buddy at Seattle,, against a Mustang and the Hardy Boys' 55 Chevy during the Fallnationals.
Photo 3: A '74 Olds Omega in D/A sponsored by Dunmire Oldsmobile, driven by Lynn Wellfringer.
Photo 4: Al,, I don't who this was, but he ruined a '67 Olds body, turning it into a roadster!

So that's what that radically customized 'thing' is. :) I could be wrong but the car in the other lane looks like it's Dave Wren's SS/C (CA?) Hemi Road Runner.
