That is awesome. Maybe something good will come out of St. Louis too.

Bob, I wish it would go back just like it was. I don't think IHRA could draw enough cars or people (Locals are used to seeing the big names at the national events.) to make any money there.

that's an excellent point there Ed.

Re: Memphis

I would love to see it go IHRA. We need some places to race that are not NHRA and would give NHRA some competition. How about one of those IHRA sportsman national events at Memphis. They use to draw a lot of stock and super stock for the points race in Memphis.

Ed Wright 12-16-2010 10:38 AM

Re: Memphis

Greg, that is a big facility with a lot of overhead. I would to see it go broke again. I don't see IHRA being able to draw enough to make money. They don't have the names to draw enough people to fill it up like they need to. Just not that many want to see jet fire trucks.

Greg Hill 12-16-2010 12:00 PM

Re: Memphis

Ed for what they bought it for the overhead should be manageable. I know Bowling Green is a very profitable race track and it doesn't have a National event, but it does stay busy all the time. Memphis use to have a bunch of races other than NHRA races. NMCA , super chevy, big buck bracket races and a bunch more.

Re: Memphis

isn't IHRA still running the complete 1/4 mile. i would think a lot of people would like to see some big cars run on a good facility. lots of guys used to run both.

Sounds like Memphis/IHRA is a done deal!

Re: Memphis

Keep in mind they got the round track and road course too. They don't have to make all the money off the 1/4 mile. I will also bet NASCAR will like to go back especially if Nashville closes.

I'll bet IHRA TOC will end up there.

I'd be surprised if they drew 1/2 as many cars.

Maybe with all the fee increases and how they treat the stock and S/S guys over this new car crap they might draw more cars than you think this year.

I hope your right. I love racing with IHRA. I don't understand the low car counts, unless they have a brain fart when choosing race dates.

Re: Memphis

One of the biggest problems Memphis had was managing there local bracket and outlaw program. If they managed that better the facility could better manage to stay above water. They never had a problem attracting some of the bigger events(NMCA, NHRA, ADRL, etc), but they will need to keep a the track bracket and outlaw program together to better manage cost. They should hold bracket races every weekend in between big events and have a monthly or bi-monthly outlaw program. They were also stingy with track prep but this could be fixed it with a lil effort on their part. Hope they can make it work though, I need an event inside of 4 hrs to attend. I haven't seen but one Super Stock car for two years. I'm way past due for a divisional race.

Re: Memphis

They better get some better security there on the "off" weekend bracket programs. People were getting their stuff stolen left and right. Also, a background check on some of the staff may be helpful.....
