Racing Gas Containers
What do you guys do with your empty race gas barrels? Can you sell them to someone? Do you reuse them etc? I have a couple I would like to get rid of.
Thanks Robert |
Re: Racing Gas Containers
I either swap them out when I get a new drum delivered or I've also given them to a co-worker who had been making them into BBQ grills/smokers.
Needless to say, I air them out pretty good and he probably takes additional precautions before modifying them. |

Just a FYI
The VP barrels are coated inside. Quote:

Re: Racing Gas Containers
Thanks for the reply guys. I am just looking for someone that needs these barrels. My supplier that I buy gas from does not take them back....Oh well, I guess I will have a couple burn barrels in the future....LOL...

Re: Racing Gas Containers
Our metal recycler will take them if you cut off the lid. Its then considered scrap metal.

Re: Racing Gas Containers
Hey Bob, how do you cut off the lid without making them go boom? I have been wanting to cut the lower section off one so I can use it for a cleaning pan.

Air chisel or saw ought to do it. I usually rinse them out with water just in case of a spark. JimR |

Re: Racing Gas Containers
the best thing is pump exhaust gas in them, from your regular car. the carbon monoxide will displace gas fumes. then wash out with water.

Re: Racing Gas Containers
Fill it with water...
Our local track takes them once in a while and turns them into trash cans. |

That's how we do it when cutting / welding on natural gas lines that still have some gas in 'em. My Dad always said, "The only time you need to be scared is if the fire goes OUT!" ;) |
Re: Racing Gas Containers
Fill at least one up with stabilized pump gas for when the power goes out and the gas stations don't work.

Re: Racing Gas Containers
I never used any of those fancy tools, lol. I just use a chisel and hammer to get the lid off. p.s. It's good to use gloves when you do it this way..
