Thanks from "Gas Ronda"

After hearing about the "Met a Drag Racing Legend" thread from his good friend from Indianapolis "Jerry Harvey", (because I never told him I was posting it) Gas made a special trip back to my shop to make sure that I wished everyone on the "Class Racer" Forum his very-very best! Gas emphasized that he couldn't believe that so many of todays racers remembered and appeciated his contribution to our sport and added "that if he lives to be 100 he won't forget it"!

Also Merc & I would like to thank everyone for the kind words said about "Team Checkmate past and present, and like Gas we really appeciate it too!

Merry Christmas, and the best of luck to everyone in the coming New Year!

Read your other thread. I have not met you Mike but good story. I met Rhonda in 1964 in Julesberg Colorado. He had his BOLT and was running high 12's. Darryl Zimmerman (NHRA) was strip manager then. We ran him with our new 64 Hemi 2 dr. hdtp. all steel car. (stick) We ran low 13's (terrible) but new car. Had a nice talk with him then. I was 21 years old. I envy you. Thanks for the story Raced Les Ritchey also. Richard Beshore

Mike,

Great story and thanks.

You could have titled it, "Where Drag Racing legends met", but it sound like you are very humble considering your accomplishments that we here respect and admire.

Anybody remember the 1965 fairlane T-Bolt ( One of One ) that Jerry Harvey ran in 66, or his Bob Ford 427 Galaxie ??

I hate to admit my age but I remember them both. I also remember the first T-Bolt.....The 63 Fairlane A/FX called the "Zimmy 1" built and raced by Tasca Ford at Indy in 63.

Tasca get's credit for that car but it was built at Ford Engineering in the X-Garage at the the Ford Test Track in Dearborn in the summer of 63 it was driven by Bill Humphries a Ford test Driver and flat towed on a tow bar to Indy by Bill in his 58 Ford Wagon and a couple of other guys.

Not trying to hi lack this thread but how many on here ever flat towed before motor homes, ramp trucks, inclosed trailers, etc. Someone start a new thread and tell us some wild stories about your flat towing days. I have a couple....LOL.

Dr. Beshore...although we never met I did get to see the MPR Hemi car in Tom (Muskie) Stiel's garage while he was building your headers. Tom's craftsmanship is second to none and is also given all the credit in the world for building "All Three Team Checkmate Stock Eliminator Camaro's" from the ground up!

Steve, Ed, and Terry...All I can say is thanks again. Merc and I really do appreciate it!

Actually Darrell Droke had the 65 T-Bolt Fairlane first and then Jerry Harvey

I seem to recall that the 'cammer' '65 T-Bolt of Darrell Droke won something at Pomona... but I can't remember if it was classified as an A/FX or B/FX car. Maybe it just won class, but I think it ran 10.60s, and that was pretty quick at the time.

Never could figure out why Ford didn't take that idea and run with it... the concept was awesome...

Muskie is a great guy. Talented. Followed your cars and enjoyed. We need more experiences like yours to be spread around. Thanks again for taking the time. If I get to Palm Springs I will look you up. We have many common "friends". R.Beshore

Car ran B/FX. Most people think that was only a small block class but it was not. Car was very fast and won several times.Ford wanted to go Mustang racing to promote the Stang to the " younger generation " and thought the Fairlane not the product to do it with. By 66 you had the long nose Mustang running aroud. Droke had one to, sponsored by Downey Ford

I had the pleasure of racing Gas Rhonda in the very first Cobra back in late 62 or early 63 at Pomona. It was for a photo shoot of the new Cobra and I had a '63 Corvette. I never could beat that car. Wish I had some pictures.

I had the chance to meet Gas last year at the Fab Fords show at Knotts berry Farm in California. I never got to watch him race, but he was super nice and said he appreciated the young people and loves the cars of today.
