Re: el-camino ever done?
I can recall one that was a 396 / manual trans way back in the late '60's. It tended to spin the tires more than others and liked to leave the line more sideways than most...
This was on 7" slicks and starting lines were asphalt.... |
Re: el-camino ever done?
Mark Faul has one. He has won many of races with it as well as a divisional champ in it I believe.

Re: el-camino ever done?

ElCaminos actually work fairly well. Of course mine was a 283/PG so not a ton of torque. |
Re: el-camino ever done?
Dunno if anybody else will remember this, (and this is, at best, second-hand information) but, before the whole "hydro in a sedan delivery" debacle got started (I saw my first one in1965) somebody on the West Coast with NHRA's blessing, campaigned a 1st-generation El Camino with a triple-carbureted, 348-powered /hydramatic Stocker, and I believe that might have been the first NHRA-approved hydro-in a Chevy "truck" racecar in Stock Eliminator. I THINK I saw it at the 1962 Indy Nationals, and it was red.
Can anyone confirm this? I'm pretty sure it must have been Indy, because I was living in Arkansas at that time; not going to the Coast for races back then. The next time I saw mention of a "Hydramatic/Chevy," was when the national record for H/SA was set in 1965 by a team from Washington-stste (Anglin-Clark-VanDill). They had the e.t. record while Marv Ripes had the MPH with his Powerglide car. That's when the fight started...lol!!. |

I remember the El Camino from an old Hot Rod Magazine but I dont remember the owner/drivers name. It was either a 59 or a 60 model. They considered the El Camino to be a truck for the reason to allow the hydo. Mybe someone like Chuck Norton will remember or it might come to me later. |
Re: el-camino ever done?
Might be Ed Holman.

Re: el-camino ever done?
I sem to recall fuzzily that the Lady that pitted us for many year and died several years ago to Cancer..........won class back in the 50's with her El Camino and was the first women to do so in NHRA History. Does anybody else recall the Lady or Her Car? My memory is not what it was... Seems like her first Name was Roberta and she was a icon at the track nearly forever.

Terry, thanks a lot for all that information!!! I well remember the DESERT MOTORS '64 427 AA/SA car but had NO IDEA of the connection to the El Camino that started the HydraMatic dance that ended so badly,,,, Can you imagine the profound effect this ensuing Hydro debacle had on Mike Schmitt, his having started the whole thing? At one time, in about 1970, every Stock Class record from about E/SA down to the bottom Automatic class (N/SA???) was held by some sort of Chevy/Hydro combination. Hell, there were '57 Fuelie motor (283 HP) sedan deliveries in profusion... Marvin Ripes must have gotten a huge kick out of it when NHRA finally said, "NO MORE!!!" |

Er, Bill; I think the gentleman in question's name was "Schmidt," not "Schmitt."... not that it matters, now, 45 years later.... |
Re: el-camino ever done?
I can't find a pic of Schmidt's el camino but here is a shot of the Desert Motors car (restored)....

It looks to me that C/SA back in 1961 was 11.89-12.49 lbs/hp. It looks like the only engine that fits this break in the el camino was the single 4 barrel carter at 305 horsepower. What am I missing? |
Re: el-camino ever done?
I believe that Butch Leal ran an El Camino combination on the west coast prior to joining the Mickey Thompson organization.

Somebody please help my aging mind... Was Casler just the soft rubber retreads or did they eventually make their own tires?

Re: el-camino ever done?
My experiences with a 348 and a 4 speed included more broken differentials and drive line parts than I cared to think about. Those pictures of 348 powered El Caminos and all at Pomona are neat, but how many spare third members did a race team need to get through a race like Pomona? You had to ride the clutch and drive the car out of the hole in order to get to the finish line. Any attempt to leave hard usually resulted in bad noises coming from the back of the car.

Re: el-camino ever done?
Was that Wiley Cossey ElCamino blue by any chance?
Years ago at Bakersfield HotRod Reunion there was a blue 59 triple carb , 4 speed El Camino for sale quite cheap. Looked like it'd been parked for years. If I wasn't a Ford diehard i'd have bought it. I had a 67 Ranchero 390, 4 speed and looked at making a Stocker of it, but it's not in the guide. Compared to a regular Fairlane it's 3" shorter wheelbase and the extra 100lbs is all in the back, double walls, tailgate, etc. I'd imagine an ElCamino is the same way compared to a Chevelle, if not in wheelbase then the extra weight out back. |
