'69 Camaro Z-28 homecoming.......Forty years later ! ! !

9 Attachment(s)
Tonight its home -- some forty years ago -- almost to the day I sold my '69 Camaro Z-28 to a guy I knew from my hometown and have regretted it everyday since then .Would you believe that same guy sold it back to me this evening ? You bet he did and it now resides in my shop .I'm still not sure what I'll do with it but ......Anyway , first thing I did was check the VIN and cowl tags its the one allright .Most of it is a little rough and the original drive train has been replaced by a 468" monster but its still the cutie I remember as I haven't laid eyes on it for at least thirty years - maybe more as it spent most of its life in storage because the owner was in lock-up most of that time until a few years ago but thats another story .Not sure about my next move but .......

Well , I do know my next move - you'll remember - when Desi said to Lucy --" honey you've got some splainin' to do " -- that'll be me - splainin' why there is another '69 Camaro around . Stay tuned .........

What do you do?

go sit in it,
smell it,
touch it,
feel it,
smile from ear to ear,
go "vroom vroom" a couple, no make that 3-4 times and then chuckle, maybe even laugh out loud.
sit back and sigh,
remember what was,
think of what will be,
then smile some more.

glad you got it back.

Unk

What a GREAT story ! and the old photo... as it should be.

As mentioned... just go sit init, and get re-aquainted.
Personally, I'd get a correct 302 back in there.

Sounds like she's home

Or just follow the 468 with a 427 for A or B. Pretty cool to get your old car back. You could always hide it at the car lot and see how long it takes her to notice lol.

Jack, Not many of us get to re-live a part of our past. You will enjoy the time you get to spend with one of your old toys.

Doug - Its at the lot but she already knows ..........and I thought about that 427 for about a minute anyway but I can hardly afford buying LS1's let alone motors to chase CobraJets so I'll just go Vroom-Vroom in the garage for now .Besides , if any money is to be spent it'll be on bodywork etc .

Rich - No counting here - this ain't trout fishing as there is no limit on how many I can have- at lease that's what I say at home ..................

Great story, congratulations. I bought my 1969 ss/rs back a few years ago that I drove in high school, also from the same guy I sold it too. For me, I was lucky because it's the car I had when I met my wife, so I didn't have too much explaining to do.

Jack, I had a brand new 69 big block SS Camaro when I was 18. That car was awesome. Dark green with dark green custom interior, dark green vinyl top. I traded it in 71 for a SS 454 Monte Carlo. I use to dream about that Camaro. I have no idea what happened to it. It's really cool that you got yours back.

I still have dreams about buying back my old '55 Hardtop, then, when I wake up remember that about 2 weeks after I sold it the guy flipped it and destroyed the car.
Glad your dreams came true!

Jack: The 302 engines are fun, because you don't have to worry about RPMs especially on the street, the engine was built for 9k and you'll be lucky to get 7500 with stock valve springs even if you miss a gear. If anything, put a small roller cam in it so that you don't have to mess with solid lifters and camshafts going bad. (I guess with a roller, you might be able to get to 9k!) I've had nothing but 302's in my car since I've owned it, that's been a little while now.

Wish I could find my old 68 I raced in the late 70s. The teak steering wheel is worth more then I sold the whole car for. Toughest motor Ive ever seen.

Awesome, nothing like a 69 Camaro. The day I bought my 69 Z a guy stopped by and wanted to buy it right off the trailer. I also bought a 69 Super Stocker in N.C. a few years back, was on I-85 for about 2 minutes and an SUV ran up to the door of the dually. I figured there was a chain dragging or something, not the case. These young guys were going crazy over that dust covered 69 Camaro on our open trailer. I dont think their girlfriends got it though! I like all cars, but all my dad heard from the time I was 13 was 69 Camaro. I am very happy for you.

Wow, nice story. Like so many other Camaro fans, a '69 w/ RS package is my all time favorite car. Please keep us posted on its progression.

Isaac - what's really amazing is how many of us had Z-28's back in the day .As for my title - its just a crumbled up forty year old piece of paper and I'm sure the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will be glad to issue another when I send them their fees .

Found a great original picture earlier this evening and as soon as I remember how to change a tiff image to a jpeg I'll post it .

My bodyman stopped by the shop late this afternoon and told me how glad he was that I got my car back - he's known it almost since new - that and the fact that his daughters college tuition payment is due soon .He really didn't make my day but his sure picked up .

Jack, that's very cool that you got your old Z-28 back. My first musclecar was a Rally Green '69 when I was a Senior in High School, but I sold it to buy a nice '71 Camaro (seemed like a good idea at the time!) Many years later I tried to track it down with no success, so I bought my current '69 instead. This one used to be a hard running SS/JA & KA when raced by Louis Desjardins in the '70's and Fred Thibeault up until the late '80s, but now it's just a fun street/strip ride.

I still carry around the VIN # for my old '69 in my pocket, just in case I find it at a car show though!

Kempton,
I heard about your old car, it fell of the ferry some years ago coming to the US when the current owner didn't set the park brake correctly, evidently you can find it at the bottom of the Strait !! LOL

Congrats Jack. I've owned my 68 Z/28 almost 43 years and it still tickles the **** out of me to shift at 7500RPM.

Someone asked me this afternoon how many miles were on this car - my answer was it never dawned on me to look as it really didn't matter one way or the other as I was buying no matter how many were on it .

But my curiosity got the best of me and I had to check it out - to my surprise - only 43,000 - my best guess its correct because of the many years he spent in lock-up .

Billy - They do still look great today - one other thing - if you notice the wheelwells are filled - thats because it wore H 70 X 15 Goodyears - pretty big meats for that time .

Happy for you Jack. One year ago this past weekend I was given the opportunity to buy back my 66 Chevy II Super Sport. Of course I jumped at the opportunity and bought it from the same couple we sold it to 22 years ago. It is at the body shop now in the process of being restored. It will relive life on the street. And yes...the title was still in Dad's name.

Congrats again.
