Ernie thanks to you and Roger for letting us go back in time when I now realize how much fun we had racing back then. Odie Isom from Greenwood Indiana used take me with him when he went racing and I loved every minute of it. I also remember a guy from Osgood Indiana that raced a Hemi Cuda but I dont remember his name.

I think that may have been Bill Schmaltz out of Osgood. I believe his was an A automatic car. Bill later bought the Harold Stout SS/Am firebird.
I wasn't sure about my link, whether anyone found it.

Ernie,

Anyone that was around 35-40 years ago would surely remember Roger England. That SS/DA car was wicked fast and cool. It was always neat when he and Bob Williams "Double Trouble" Chevelle would tangle.

I even remember him bringing that car down here to Brown County a handful of times to take on the locals. Occasionally took trips down to Columbus to go to his Sunoco station (where the Burger King is now), just to see the car.

I remember Roger England, one of the first cars i seen use magnet decals on there cars.
Ernie, Schmaltz bought the Eddie Schartman 68 SS/AH Dart and it never did come out.

Thanks, Ernie, for posting Roger's stuff. SS/DA was one of the toughest super stock classes at that time . I remember Boitnott bros., Cook bros., Chuck Little, and lots more in our local area. Seems there were about 20 or so cars at Indy in 72 when Roger won if I remember correctly. Bob Michael.

I used to run occasionally with Gary Ragsdale when he bought Odie's tan Q/SA Wagon, seems like it was a 396/325 car wasn't it?

He used to tow that thing around with a really nice 70 Chevelle SS 454 car.
I remember it rolling forward and putting a dent in the Chevelle's bumper with the tow bar at Brown County.

Always thought it looked bass ackwards, a sweet Chevelle flat towing a huge wagon...
Of course I know somebody that towed his 67 Mustang with a Pinto too.. :)

Good days indeed

I actually ran into Gary last summer, he said he still had it. I had a shot at it before he got it, it belonged to the son of one of my dad's drivers that did a lot of trans work He did the T350 in my 67 Camaro... danged if I can remeber his name

Gary had a 73-74 Chevelle pror to the 70, it was HUGE and heavy. It was a rare 454 four speed car. Driveshaft retention was a problem lol

The kid Gary sold it to drove it off the big hill in front of my parents house there on Fry road.

Thanks, Steve. Many moons have passed over the great prairie since the fun days and I can't wait for the snow to melt off the tepee so we can get back out there! To continue with the gushing, Steve works harder on his car than anyone I know of in class racing. Beautiful well prepared and he even keeps it somewhat clean! Bob M.

Rogers car was great. I enjoyed running with Dewey Cook, Roger, Bob and others at Edgewater.Dallas Kelly was there too. I ran my 69 Chevelle wagon. I could not go a quick as Bill Hanes in Michigan with the 350 combination but I was very competitive locally. That was fun week end racing. Who was the big guy from Greenwood Ind with the Hemi car?, Red hair, Beard.
Just remembered Danny Crawley!

The original Cuda was traded with Dale Meers from Buffallo KY for the Duster. It was Shay Nichols Por Stock car, she has quite a history as well as the car. I believe her ride in that car made her the first female in Pro Stock.
That car was traded within a year for the red white & blue Cuda, which was Ronald Lyles' Pro stock car. That car was the first Sox&Martin pro stock Cuda that Ronnie won a bunch of races in, then they built a new car in '71 and sold the original '70 car to Lyles.

What ever happened to the old Ford Highboy that your dad had at your house back then. I remember him showing it to us and telling us he had to let the air out of the tires to get it under the garage door....
BTW - I believe it was '75. I got out of school to go w/dad get the car, it was not done, so I got to work at Herb's shop for a couple weeks while it was finished.
I still remember, Herb had me painting the cage, and his quote was "It the car runs as fast as the paint, we got it made!"

If I recall correctly, Shay Nichols first ran an original ZL-1 Camaro in Pro Stock, followed by a Challenger, and then the Duster. She and Shirley Shahan were among several women in Pro Stock in the early '70's but Shay was likely the most active female driver. There was a feature on the Duster in DRUSA or SS&DI back in the day.

I haven't seen Roger in years. The is a Burger King where His Sunoco station was. Herb McCandless redone His rear suspension and wheel openings were tweaked. Odie ran a chevy wagon at one time. Blue or green. He ran at Bean Blossom quite a bit.

Double Trouble was a blue 70 chevelle if I remember right. Blue, big block car with a mile of front end lift. Kinda like the Truppi and King car.

I think Earnie Neal has built more ran cars than anyone alive. When I worked at the Chev/buick/olds/pont dealer in North Vernon Indiana Earnies 84 Camaro sat on our showroom floor. I don't remember the class but johnnies muffler helped him build some headers (I think).

Thanks Dave, You are right about my 86 Camaro Ed Calloway put that car on the show room for a couple of months back in winter 86. It ran the SS/CS class as did my previous Chevy II.

Todd at Johnny's helped with building those front exit headers.

Since this post came back up it reminded me that I have only scanned in half of Roger's scrap book. Time permitting I'll try to finish that scanning this winter and add them on.

Roger still goes to the nationals, I didn't see him there this year, but stopped by prior to and He said Friday He was coming up.

My son David has been sporting the 2005 Sunfire in GT/C at some points meets and Indy twice now. He is also quite a car builder, too. He was all excited with it going 9.27 at 1600' last weekend.

We ran at Bluegrass quite a bit. I also remember racing Roger a lot, seems like at KilKare and Edgewater we always had to run him, and we mostly came in second LOL. I remember how happy my partners were the first time we managed to beat Roger, they thought we finally 'arrived!' Roger is a class act.
