Hot news flash: Stk/superstock combo race at indy

This weekend while at the Drag Racing Expo, I had the pleasure of talking with Kurt Johnson, Director of Racing Operations at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. Kurt is trying to increase track usage and spectator count. They are going to have a Stock/Super Stock combo race the weekend after the April Divisional race. Kurt also told me that if they get enough cars, they will split the combo race and run Stock AND Super Stock. Bruce B. will be there to do tech inspections We would also be able to leave our equipment there after the points meet. Did I mention he said 4 THOUSAND AMERICAN DOLLARS to win? There isn't any info on the track website yet, I'll keep you informed as I find out more. There was a flyer floating around at the Expo. I will try and get one scanned and post it. Think we can get a good car count? Sound off.

Why do you think they scheduled it the same weekend as the Numidia, PA race?

To try and screw over a pvt. racers race. $10,000 plus extras is a better deal anyway.

I'm in, I'm in... thanks for track owners trying to help promote our Sportsman classes, and thinking about a race from our perspective!!

Some Div 5 racers might make the trip to Indy, no way we drive to Pa. X Techman, why so negative ALL the time? Have a nice day. Dyno

Like the Indy combo is going to take away from the D1 $10,000 combo race. Give me a brake Terry. Is there anything you don't bitc# about?

The same weekend as the IHRA race in London, KY as well as the one in Numidia. Seems like they could have chosen a better weekend.

Re: Hot news flash: Stk/superstock combo race at indy

I may be seeing something that's not really there but I get the feeling this date was chosen to try and take away from the IHRA race and the race in Pa. Indy hasn't had a combo race in 5 or 6 years and the last one they had there were about 12 or 15 cars and I was one of them. I will be attending the IHRA race in London.

Thanks Greg. That is exactly what IHRA needs to continue having divisional races. Just a little support here and there..... It is nice to have choices.......

Re: Hot news flash: Stk/superstock combo race at indy

One would think that they would schedule the S/SS race the week BEFORE the Divisional. That would give people a little practice before the points race.

But no, they want to schedule it on the weekend of the nearby IHRA Divisional and the Privately run S/SS $10K plus extras race which I think was scheduled at Numidia to draw on some of the Div. 3 racers.

Bad choice. :-(

WOW a 4k to win payout for a Stk., SS combo race at a NHRA owned track!!!!! That has to be some sort of a record. If fuel gets to $4. plus a gallon like they are talking about, most racers are going to be sticking close to home anyway. Its not going to matter what whats going on a 1000 miles away.

I'll be at IRP that weekend. 12+ hrs closer than numida and pays 4X as much as ihra pts race. That a no brainer!

Hopefully it goes over good and they'll have more of them!

K Stubbs 02-28-2011 11:24 PM

Re: Hot news flash: Stk/superstock combo race at indy

And you get paid all of it there.

Re: Hot news flash: Stk/superstock combo race at indy

Hey guys, I was there at the conversation about having the race, and I can tell you that all involved were NOT interested in conflicting with another race, just thinking of a way to help bump the attendance and give the Sportsman guys a chance to make some more money without breaking the bank traveling... since this is still in the planning stages, maybe the week before can be accommodated if the week after has so many conflicts. Give John and Kurt a chance to put this thing together.

Jeremy, you wouldn't race an IHRA race if it was across the street from your house. So many of you think so short term.

I wouldn't get too excited until I saw what the entry fee and the rest of the purse looks like... There's more than one line on a flyer.

$.02,

What it looks more like a IHRA pts race mike? $135 entry and if you get down to three cars you get back $125. I don't know why people don't race more IHRA?

K Stubbs 03-01-2011 09:43 AM

Re: Hot news flash: Stk/superstock combo race at indy

Seems like a lot of negative feedback for something we are supposed to be supporting.

This is a straw man argument. I don't know how many times the payout structure needs to be explained. (OR what this thread has to do with IHRA) When paying round money, the payout "at three cars" is dependent on the number of rounds the race goes. I've gone more rounds to get to the semis of NHRA Div. and Nat'l Opens, and still lost money on the weekend.

THE POINT of my post was for people to make informed decisions. I wasn't putting the Indy race down... we don't know hardly anything ABOUT it yet (which again, is the whole point). Just be careful, guys, because big money bracket racing went down the road of promoting only the top line on the flyer. Some promoters earned a phenomenal reputation by making racers *think* they were getting a deal. You can compare two different $20,000 to win races and find the total purse being thousands and thousands of dollars different. A racer's potential return on investment hinges on FAR more than just "how much does it pay to win?" Entry fee, buybacks (and how they are structured), car count minimums, the complete payout structure, number of days of the event, etc.

You are wasting your typing fingers (or breath) Michael....some on here have NHRA tattooed on their azz and it dosent matter what you explain to them. Its a free world and they will do what they think is good for them yet they will still bash anything else or any other race that isnt what they do. My only point in my prior post was why do they always put a race on top of any other race that is not an NHRA race? The car count would have to hurt them also for doing this. Are they that desperate to try and make the other race a looser and look bad ? The Brian Vanpople and Lee Zane race is the best thing to come along in a very long time in the payout dept. and its one reason I support it for stock and S/S no matter the towing distance. Each to their own.

I have raced IHRA before in fact I won a IHRA pts race a long while back. I have no axe to grind with them or NHRA for that matter. I chose to race the races that have the most APPEAL to me. And a $4000 combo race hour and half from my house with NHRA tech there (Bruce), on a 1/4 mile track, and with heads up runs is very APPEALING to me. Especially if you are allowed to leave your trailer there over the week in between with security present.

I doubt it will pull any cars from Van Poppel & Zane's race. And I doubt it will affect the IHRA pts race car count in London by more than 10%. So maybe 4 total less Stock and Super Stockers. It won't make or break either race.

Speaking of short term, not to long ago on here you were pushing everyone to support your local Stock/SS associations and combo races. Well this is one more LOCAL combo race that needs our support......................

Jeremy, I support our local combo races which is more than you do. Andrew and I both are at BG and Ohio Valley most of the time there is a combo race. To schedule this deal on top of the other two races is a little suspicious.

I am glad you find 1/8 mile racing, buybacks, random card draw pairing, and questionable track prep appealing. I don't.......

As far as Bowling Green combos My Father and myself have raced them in the past and will race some in the future. I have work and Family events that have to be balanced with racing and can not make every one.

Hope to see you and Andrew at the races this year. Good Luck buddy!
