Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Well, I'm still here. Today is tech day. It's going to be a hot one over the next few days and it will cool off drastically for Sunday. It's supposed to get up to 86 today, 91 tomorrow and 88 on Saturday. Then it will cool down a bunch with 66 being the predicted high for Sunday.
Mark Faul had a cracked cylinder in his Super Stocker and had it sleeved earlier this week. He is just about finished installing the bullet. He should be ready to go in Super Stock this weekend if everything goes well. I will try to get a shot of the schedule and post it later. -Toby |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
I hope you haven't been stuck at the track all this time with no transportation. You could have won a whole bunch of money at the casinos.

Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Toby - Don't sweat the hot days coming to you as we in Pennsylvania will have the high today will be in the upper forties with a major snowstorm moving in tonight that will go by here and right into New England tomorrow .
PS- 66 degrees would be great ! ! ! Keep the news coming ..................... |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
I just learned something interesting today. I found out that when you get shut off on the line and backed out, you can't work on your car. I have seen people lift their hoods to cool off before running again and I didn't think there was any rule about not working on your car, but I guess there is.
Funny thing though, when Mike Rice told John he was going to have to race with the 10.00 dial, John was under the hood with a wrench adjusting the throttle stop. Why didn't Mike say anything to him about it then? One more thing. I talked to John again in the tech line (John first came over and talked to me about it about 30 minutes after it happened.) He said he was disappointed that I didn't say that they didn't do it intentionally in my post last weekend. I told him I'm sure everybody knows that you didn't do it intentionally and that I wrote that post before I talked to you. I just want to let everyone know that they didn't do it intentionally. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. It's been a learning experience for me and I hope that others can learn by it as well. Here's the schedules: Friday: http://i19.fastpic.ru/big/2011/0401/...ae63a04fa9.jpg Saturday: http://i19.fastpic.ru/big/2011/0401/...2aba44f046.jpg Sunday: http://i19.fastpic.ru/big/2011/0401/...adb7e36e6a.jpg |

Toby the CJ is a drive by wire car (I think) so they wouldn't use a wrench, they would use a laptop to alter throttle opening. |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Art,
This would probably be true if they had a blower on it. I don't think the 428's use a blower. I thought they had to use a laptop also, but I know what I saw and there were plenty of others who saw it too. He must know how much each setting will pick up the car. I don't think he let it all hang out either. -Toby |

Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Sorry I thought it was the Supercharged one. It is an EFI so a laptop would change the tune. But it's probably not drive by wire.
Drive by wire opens a lot of doors as to what you can do legally. |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
I see only 2 qualifying runs for Stk & S/Stk. More NHRA enhancements for our money!

Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Toby,
Are the car counts on the run sheets pre-entered vehicles or actual cars on the ground as of today? 64 cars in Stock and 28 in Comp! Looking forward to another great series of reports and videos! Many thanks! Lew |

There are only 2 lanes, a third pass would just confuse the issue...................... Actually, most who are there ran last weekend where we recieved 4 time trials. By the 4th pass, the entire super gas field went dead on and .400. |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Lew,
Yes, the car counts listed on the run sheets are from pre-entered vehicles. Actual counts will probably be a little less. Thanks a lot for the kind words. Hope I can get some good video tomorrow. I don't know if they will let me into the reserved section of the stands or not. I might have to do it from the sportsman section or behind the line. -Toby |

Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Nothing posted on DRC yet, but if you look on live timing under Stock qualifying--looks like Jimmy DeFrank is # 1 @ -1.003 under.

Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas

Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Two rounds of qualifying? That's it? Is this another "enhancement"? Jim

Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
any idea what happened to Chuck Stubeck on his Q1 attempt?
|
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Sorry, my internet service is practically nonexistent. I'm sure it's due to all the fans using their Sprint phones. It doesn't get much slower than this. I've been trying to upload the Super Stock Q1 video, but I've only got 3 megs uploaded in the last two hours.
Chuck Stubeck was most likely DQed for fuel. Could be weight, but I doubt it. On the video I took I have him going 9.91 at 132 MPH. -Toby |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
For the few of you that find it necessary to complain about a simple schedule posting.
This is a 3 day race. 2 qualifiers are common place at a 3 day race. |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
You are correct Jody. I went back and checked. This seems to be common practice for the last two years. Jim

it's just the fact that we keep getting charged more and continue to get less. |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
I hear ya Brett. Entry, crew passes, all the same price whether 4 day or 3...
The Seattle race has been 3 days as long as I've been racing Stock. Sonoma, Phoenix, quite a few are actually 3 days. |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
It ALL beats sitting at home!
Good luck guys! Thanks for the reporting! |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas

Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Super Stock Q1 is finally up:
http://www.youtube.com/user/toby6570 I got Q2 encoding now. All the rent-a-security dudes were gone so I was able to shoot from the reserved section. Not sure when it will be up. I might have to upload it overnight. -Toby |

You now have to run under the index to qualify. LOL |

Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Hey, it was still April 1st in Vegas when I posted that. :) It was Dan's idea. It was just a mix up. DRC didn't use the right form or whatever. Dan is on the ladder in the tower. DRC should post a revised order and ladder when they get here.
Super Stock Q2 is up. Watch Tom Nolan's left front wheel closely on his run. His run starts at about the 7:30 mark. They start with Super Gas this morning and then Stock and Super Stock. -Toby |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Well, it's just the same as yesterday. When the fans are here my internet service goes to ****. I also noticed this at Pomona, but it wasn't nearly as bad.
Bernie Cunningham gave me an in-car video of him dropping Mark Faul like a hot potato at the finish line. I have Super Stock round one ready to upload also. As soon as the fans leave I'll be able to upload them. I noticed the helmet cam uses the MJPG codec. Basically what this is, is a series of jpegs played at 30 frames per second. Each frame is separate from the other. With the H264 or Xvid codec they use the last frame (or series of frames) and only save the changes between the two. This results in a lot better compression and quality. The video that Bernie gave me is 65MB. I encoded it using the H264 codec (with the same settings as I use on my other videos) and it cut the file size down to 9MB without any loss in quality. In fact it might be a little better because the H264 codec has a deblocking filter built in. -Toby |

Super Stock Q2
I have a ? The 2nd to last pair of cars. The flashing light on the front wheel of the car in the left lane . As soon as the 2 step came on it started flashing??? I Only could see it on that car?? What is it? |
Re: Live from the Summit Nationals at Las Vegas
Toby,
So I'm guessing one of our "enhancements" wasn't a decent WIFI hub at National Events! ;) I really appreciate all your efforts. Funny that we had better coverage of the LODRS event last week from 1320go and Ustream! Of course, I need to get the car finished and be with you all at the track! Good luck! Lew (waiting for the rain to stop!) |
