"Live" from NHRA Hot Rod Reunion!
We are in Bowling Green, KY for the big Hot Rod Reunion! This is the first one that we have attended, but everyone who has been here in recent years say it is the biggest party of the year here at Beech Bend. We got home Sunday from Joliet, unloaded the dirty laundry, loaded up with groceries, did a little work (like payroll), and left again this morning. We are going to be running Top Stock here in B/S which is a 10.50 class. I guess we will find out all the rules as we go along. There are also Nostalgia Super Stock, old gasses, old top fueler, old funny cars and others. This along with a big bunch of "Shine and Show" cars. I will be posting pictures along the way. The race runs from Thursday thru Saturday.
This should be fun!! If you are coming out, come by to see us. Redman got us a very good spot just across from the score boards along the main road. Thanks, Red! |

We'll see you tomorrow night. We got the evil green car fired Sunday afternoon. Apparently, we got your luck from last year.

Re: "Live" from NHRA Hot Rod Reunion!
Dad and I attend every year, and you're right, it's a party that has some racing going on. Top stock is what I always run, just a hard dial for the entire race. We will see you guys tomorrow.

Re: "Live" from NHRA Hot Rod Reunion!
Wish we were going, but dad has carpal tunnel surgery tomorrow in his right hand, so we won't be out for a few weeks.

Re: "Live" from NHRA Hot Rod Reunion!
Well after rain on the way here and for a while this afternoon, it turned into a beautiful evening. The grounds at the Augusta golf course have nothing on the grounds here. Everything is all mowed and very nice. Our pits look better than our lawn at home! I guess we will see all you guys when you get here. Andrew, tell Greg we wish him well with his surgery. We have tech tomorrow, then 2 runs on Thurs, 1 run on Friday and 1st round of eliminations on Friday. Then finish up on Saturday. We have already met some very nice people here. We will get some pics tomorrow.

Re: "Live" from NHRA Hot Rod Reunion!
Larry, I'll be there in the morning. Look forward to seeing you and Patsy. We left Joliet around noon, dropped the car off at Cope's and made it home around 7:30. too much to catch up on here so we are headed out at 6am. See you tomorrow.

One of these days I'll finish converting the Willys to a Nostalga B/Gas car. Got a Rodek 482 waiting on a 8-71 to top it ! I want to drive it in and run B/G on D.O.T. tires! |
Re: "Live" from NHRA Hot Rod Reunion!
I am going to post pictures of just cars this weekend. Didn't get any names. You can probably name a year and make and it is here!

Re: "Live" from NHRA Hot Rod Reunion!
ok, Jim, I will tell him if I see him.
Well it has been a nice relaxing day here at Beech Bend. Just a day to get parked and teched and meet lots of nice people. The weather is a lot cooler than we have had at home recently, but it did rain an hour or so ago. There were thunderstorm warnings out, but we just got quite a bit of rain. Most people are already parked, so it shouldn't make it too muddy. Tomorrow it is supposed to be sunny and about 88. We start time trials in the morning at 10. I will try to get a lot more pictures tomorrow. The street rods will all be in. Someone was saying today that there will be 2000 show cars in here tomorrow. Good night for now. |

No 385 series Fords were allowed ,at least there. I hated when the cowl hoods were allowed .Even the modern type wheels, (which I was guilty of on my 64 Tempest, ten years ago) But, it wasn't a GTO ,so I refused to put a GTO scoop hood on it. I don't know who's running that part of the show at BG, or what they'll allow. The 65 Chevelle isn't all that egregious. With the 9 second A/FX classes ,a match race style is kinda cool. That one reminds me of Tom Sturm or Malcolm Durham's car, scoop and all. What you have to remember is it's just an index bracket race. It's a far cry from real Super/ Stock as we know it. Those days are long gone except for right here on Class Racer |
Re: "Live" from NHRA Hot Rod Reunion!
Older looking cars with modern day horsepower is what passes for todays "nostalgia racing". Looks like this too is getting out of hand. What a shame!

Re: "Live" from NHRA Hot Rod Reunion!
Most of the NSS cars havs big stock appearing blocks with Indy type aftermarket heads and intake with correct type carbs. 500 to 600 cubes is common.
Tech was done by several of the NHRA regulars, as always safety was the emphasis. We saw belts being changed, plastic oil pressure lines replaced to SS braided, and rubber valve stems corrected. The track has been scraped and is ready for final prep. Most if not all want to see how fast their car will go. We start at 10:00 AM. |

Nobody is "BASHING" thes guys. The cars just dont have the old nostalgia look anymore. It has gotten away from the original intent of the classes over the years kind of like todays stock elim. . The younger people (Except Mike Carr....LOL) dont know the difference but us older guys like myself and Mark Y. who lived thru the era do. They are still neat to watch but some restraint on the hoods, scoops, wheels and other small items would go a long way in making a better show to let the younger (those that really care) group see what drag racing was like back in the 60's. |
