Super Gas has to wear them as well as any SST over 135 so why should SSbe any different. In fact those fast DP and CJ cars should have a little safety updates as well.

I started racing in SS/L and SS/K. My first pass in the K car was a 10.84 at almost 121. All that was required was a jacket, helment and a 5 point harness. As I moved up in performance over the years to B/A (at 7.52 - 181) a number of safety requirements became mandatory. First was the fireproof jacket, then the pants, then the neck brace, then the gloves.

Each time I complained about it being more hassle, not to NHRA but to myself and the people around me. However, after 3 or 4 races with each new "improvement" I became very comfortable with them. So much in fact that I felt far more secure than ever before..... almost totally insulated from the car and the environment. That made me feel more relaxed and let me concentrate on the job at hand.

Don't whine, cry and complain about it. Just do it. In the end you'll be glad you did and it may save your arse someday.

My .02

Scott, Good Post!

I invested in one of the Safety Solutions Neck Deal this year and I'm one of the few S/G guys who do wear them. I was asked by a few drivers, why do I wear it since I only go 130mph (Top End Stop) and I told them the Wall doesn't know if your going 180mph or 130mph is can still kill or harm you and they were like....hmmm very good point! I'd say any extra safety stuff that they mandate, go get it! Trust me it took about 7 or 8 runs to get used to my new addition but, it's been worth it so far.

Ran a FWD Stocker for 20 years and never had to wear more than a open faced helmet and the stock seat belts. When I got the Volare, it was a major adjustment to the jacket, pants, 5point harness and the 10 point roll bar with the access limiting door bar! After about two outings it is all became second nature. I'm glad to have all that stuff now! Jim

Hope someone makes a glove with some grip on the right hand, the ones I have now are really slick and hard to hold a 4sp shifter. I keep them in the car but haven't used them.

When building my car last year, and hopes of going fast enough to need the gloves. I purchased the Sparco gloves from Peter Biondo, they have the finger/palm grips and are great. After just a few passes as others have said it becomes second nature, rowing the 4 speed. Great gloves...

Dont know what brand you've got now, but I got a set of the G-Force 3.3/1 gloves at the beginning of last season. They've got a nice feel and grip and have held up very well with many passes "banging" through the gears.

I am all for safety if it makes sense for the vehicle and class you run, but this 2 year seat belt thing is a waste ... when I ride the Harley I wear a helmet, long pants, gloves, boots, leather jacket ... not mandatory but it is my choice ..

Gloves have been mandatory beginning 2011 for all cars running 9.99 or quicker. I got the Sparco (1) gloves and really don't mind wearing them at all. In fact, I kind of like them.

We've gone from an open face helmet, to full face. Long pants to racing pants. Trans shields to full flexplate shields. All in the last 3 years! I'm praying diapers aren't next!!!

Another question, open face or full face? And why?

I have always used an open faced helmet, mainly because I wear glasses and the fact that we can get very warm down here in the South. Good idea or bad? Why?

I talked to Bell at the SEMA show when I tried on helmets. They said full face helmets are "dental insurance." Their S2R or SR Pro has a big eye opening, works well with my glasses.

Hey guy's, thought I would chime in and give my two cents. Once the car is upside down and all the windows are turned in little bits of glass your perception of what safety equipment you need changes. When you are scrambling around in the turned over car trying to get out an ungloved hand will get cut up pretty bad by the shattered glass. Your teeth and mouth will be full of dust and glass without the full face helmet. There will be hot water, hot oil and possibly fuel sprayed all over you. Hence full race jacket with pants and shoes. A frontal impact will jerk your head forward with such amazing efficiency it may tear your skull away from your cervical spine without a helmet restraint device e.g. Han's etc. Please invest the money and purchase this equipment. It is a very low percentage of your overall racing budget. One trip to the ER will be several multiples of the cost of Han's, gloves, full face helmet, shoes, etc. I speak from experience as a racer, former top end crash participant and an ER doctor. Take care of yourself. A crash is horrible, walking away without injury is Spectacular!

I think Ashton has got it right when it comes to driver safty equipment. A number years back, a friend was killed at Houston Raceway in his Super Comp car in a crash before the finish line at a speed below a 130 MPH. After that I started using a Han's device that is easy to put on and take off and after a short time becomes a norm that I would not be without. I think a lot of us think that we are not running that fast and don't need this kind of device. I am for any hardware that will keep me safe.

Had a full face helmet and when it dated out bought an open one and replaced it with another full face one as I always felt naked in the moutth area. (Might be because all my cycle riding was done with full face hemet.) The fire jacket, pants and gloves make sense, especially in local ET racing given they have less safety equipment and staff than a national event and you are really unsure about your competitors. What opened my eyes was a final at the local track 10 years ago where a 9 second car and I were set to run and his father told me to stay in my lane as he was dialed "in the 9's and coming fast." I guess he thought a near new 13 second car would cross over into his lane dialed at nearly 17 seconds and crossing the finish line at 50 mph. It enlightened me that many out there are racing but really don't understand racing. And I realized these guys could get me hurt in a crash.
