Coil Location

This is a two part question.

1. - Coil location preference in a stocker application; under hood vs. interior??

2. - If you prefer the interior option, would you use the MSD style bulkhead fitting or a continuous coil wire routed through a grommet?

Thanks everyone and hope you're enjoying the CanadaDay / Independence Day festivities!!

Dave, with a Ford distributor being on the front of the motor, I personally would mount it up front on the core support or the fender apron. If the distributor was on the back of the motor, ie; Chevy, then I could see mounting in the interior but even then thats alot more work than needed, in my opinion. My thinking on this is shorter wires mean less problems.

Re: Coil Location

Dave, if you pass through the firewall be sure the coil wire fits loosely in the grommet. That is to say, grommet ID slightly larger than coil wire OD.

Also, what about the coil primary wires? Is the ignition controller already mounted inside the car? The primary wires need to be separated from the secondary wire.

The ignition box will be inside the car; (once I finish the install). I planned to run the coil primary wires through a separate port.

Thanks Larry.

We had many headaches with MSD Bulkhead connector.....it would arc to
ground. MSD does not advise it anymore on Drag Appliciations.

Hats off to those who have given so much so that we still are free and can celebrate the 4th tomorrow !

Hey Dave, I vote for under hood on stocker. I just came back from Norwalk Nat'l event and many stockers have it under hood on firewall, I looked at many, trust me.

Re: Coil Location

I would put it as near to the distributor as possible, keeping in mind to locate it away from extreme heat sources.

I think Venice had his mounted on the front motor plate.

Thanks Tim; keeping it simple is probably a good thing.

My Cutlass has it inside the car. It took me a couple years to find it....if ya look inside the glove box (it just has a door now) you can see an OLD Accel SS coil with a I guess a bulk head heck I don't know but the coil plugs in on one side of the firewall & dist plugs in on the other.....I figure it's been in the car since it was built back in 86.....BTW on trouble out of it as long as I have had it (07 till now)

Dave on your car, if it were me i would mount it on the front of the shock tower or the front of the engine. MSD also says to have a coil wire that is no longer than 12', (of course that was back in 09 it could have changed by now) BUT make sure to use the rubber isolators/mounts so it dampens vibrations. IMOP thats how i would do it...

That follows the "if it ain't broke principle" and there's nothing flawed in that theory. How many times have folks set out to improve a race car, only to slow it up? If this project had been turn-key, I probably would have left the coil location as was....on the shock tower.

Thanks Greg!

Thanks DE2; the majority seem to favor the under hood location - keep it as close to the distributor as possible.

Re: Coil Location

Dave that's why it still has a Posi unit in it & stock axles.....may be why it drives so good too!

Re: Coil Location

On the Nova it is mounted inside on the pass foot well, with continuous wire between the coil and the dist. We have never tried it with a shorter wire location to see if it makes any difference.
