2011 Caprice Police Package
If this belongs in the open forum, it can be moved. I am curious if GM will make the 2011 Caprice police package available to the general public.
We have two of them in our shop for radio installation. Heavy duty everything! 6.0 rated at 355 hp and 384 pounds of tourque, 6 speed automatic, rear wheel drive. Certified to 141 mph, I would imagine computer governed to this speed. I think I am going to have to "test drive" one of them to see if the radios work properly when we are finished with the installs! The Crown Vics fly, I know that. I am suprised somebody has not asked for the Impala SS 5.3 303 hp to be added to the guide. Or maybe it has and nobody has built one. #5457 Curt Rees |
Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
As I understand it, no it was brought up at the Press Conference in LA and GM said no way!

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
It would be a fun car! I have a '96 LT 1 Caprice, it is not the C9 package, it is governed at 112. It will run the quarter in 15.50 at about 90 bone stock. 22 mpg at 75 all day long.

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
I heard the 2011 Caprice will be a municipal release only in the United States. Will be available to the general public in Austrailia.

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
One of our ASRA members works for GM's commercial div. and had one of these to take to law enforcement customers about 6-9 months ago. GM is currently ONLY selling them to police depts. He loved the car, and said that the Dodge's were their competition, but there was a lot of complaints about vision issues with the Dodges.

We have 20 coming in now and 15 more next budget Curt and wait till you drive one. You will throw stones at the CV. I am amazed how well the CV held up the way they drive though. Not availiable to public yet... More expensive to build up vs the CV by about 5-6K. |
Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
Curt,
I'm no engineer but in extensive research on YouTube and other viable sources of information, I understand that radio waves take on some type of parabolic curve which distorts the signal strength once the speeds get above 135 MPH. This is accentuated by large, flat hoods with more reflective tendancies as seen on V-8 powered vehicles. That's why the NASCAR racers have that "garbled" tone to them when talking to their pit crews. So any testing you do, for the sake of our communities, should be conclusive that there are no interruptions in radio frequencies by our police officers! |
Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
Jeff, I am short a tech, when do you want to come to work? LOL Wind noise always seems to be the big problem at speed. One thing, I don't think anyone anyone has out run a radio signal!

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
I know if I look up 2011 Caprice in my GM service info it asks for civilian or police patrol vehicle. We heard rumor public version isn't getting north america release until 2012

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
Jeff I'm not disputing your claim, but why do pilots in 550 mile per hr airplanes & astronauts traveling 25,000 mph sound normal

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
Shouldn't these cars be available as used cars for taxi cabs in about 18 months? I bought a police special 1977 Plymouth Fury in 1979 for $2000. It was a former county sheriff's vehicle.

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
Curt,
I was a line mechanic at Lou Grubb Chevrolet 1983-1985 when I left for a white collar career. This is when the all new C4 1984 Corvette came out. It was the darling of Chevrolet, the highest priced production Chevrolet ever released to the general public. It was the product of hundreds of thousands of miles of product testing and clearly, Chevrolet thought they had a winner! So in all of the dealership, who was BANNED from driving one of these "hot rods"? ME! Not even allowed to drive one from parking to my bay! :D (And what a POS that car turned out to be; after 90 days of release every bay had one getting a new rear end. So much for strict testing and QC!) So based on my resume, I would have to save you the embarrassment of having to hire me and fire me all in one day... |
Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
I read that they were going to release the Caprice to the public.
Is GM in trouble again? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/#31052919 |
Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
A lot of states can not buy this car because of state guidlines.Must states have to buy in the North America trade agreement. this means Canada U.S. Mexico. They also have
floor shifter that hampers equipment instulation Yes this post has nothing to do with stock/superstock |

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
Is this a revamp of the Pontiac G8 or is it something altogether new? I haven't seen many details.
From previous comments, it appears it's built in Australia. |
Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
from what I understand it is about 8-10 inches longer than a G8 but shares the same doors and basic passenger compartment as well as similiar running gear---if you get a fairly large dealer that sells lotsa cars ya might be able to order the "undercover" version instead of the black & white version on the sly unless GM/Chevy says absolutely not to the general public---merely my opinion not sure about ordering one at all---anyway this thing has to be pretty quick I imagine---Comp

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
They are not home free yet, spending Cash like drunken sailors, not alot of new product in the pipline 2013 & 2014. Have only made little over 7,500 Vettes this year ( on the plant can make about 37,000 a year so this means the plant is losing $$$$$ big time) so far Dealer are having trouble selling them

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
"Old school, Crown Vic, new school, 2011 Caprice"! It does run! Maybe when they start surplusing them, I can get one to match my '96.

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
It is built in Australia as others have said with the drivetrain manufactured in Mexico. It is already in use in Australia as the Holden Commodore. I've driven these new Caprices on two seperate occasions. They do run hard and handle well.
The failure of GM to move the shifter on to the column is a problem. With all of the equipment mounted in the center console area of police vehicles it is a nuisance. The Ford Interceptor will be released around November. This car is based on the current Taurus and should also be a good car. It is V6 powered but the sandard engine pits out 30 more h.p. than the C.V. 4.6. It is also available with a twin turbo Eco-Boost and AWD. |

I have thought about doing the mod. Just have not got around to it.
Two of our finest stopped to look at the 2011 a couple of days ago. I let them drive the car, both were smiling like Chesire cat's when they brought it back! Let's say they were impressed! #5457 Curt Rees |

Re: 2011 Caprice Police Package
I was with the SFPD when we got the F41 Nova’s to replace our fleet of 318ci Satellite’s.
Other than being painted baby blue & white (so as not to offend the population with a black & white) it was a great car for the city..........it came with a 350 CI engine, TH-350 which had an easily defeated Low Gear Lock Out and a 4.11 positraction rear-end. It was certainly a stoplight to stoplight car. I thought that the city really had their act together until I saw our new un-marked fleet of AMC Matadors... |

Hey Bob.....LOL!! I worked on the baby blue/ white Nova's too Bob. They did run well. They still had the Diplomat's when I started. Never saw a Matador...... Wow. There is something different about the 2011 CV ( we have 14 left), they run better and do not push like the 2010 and earlier.... EVOC course at work. Sending you a pm. |
