1966........ I/SA '57 Chevy sedan delivery......283/220.....4 speed hydro.....Your choice on a carb....WCFB or Rochester 4GC......We used the Carter....

14.78 was the record I think....Big John Barkely......Half Moon Bay probably...West coast Mineshaft or so we were told anyway......

We ran some 14.70's that year......ran like crap at Indy but got to the final....Got beat.....Winner DQ'ed.....Than same fate for us......

The record of 14.78 at Half Moon Bay was set by Marv Ripes in late 1965. This was before John Barkley was involved with the A-1 Automatic Hardtop. Yes Half Moon Bay was a mine shaft. Div 7 does not have any more mine shafts.

Tony......I think the East Coast had numerous mineshaft tracks......Just needed the right weather conditions....

Cecil County...
Atco.....
Suffolk....

I may be fuzzy but I sure recall Barkely's name on that record....

We always wondered how the heck a P/G trans car could run that fast....

There was none like that anywhere around here!

Anyone with a P/G was usually not even in the 14's......

I'm guessing that the car was owned, or at least engineered by Ike Smith. He was responsible for most of the Hudson Stockers in Southern California. The track was almost certainly Carlsbad.

Regarding the "legal" hood bubble. This picture was the rough chronological contemporary of the earlier post of Larry Walker's '57 blown Ford with a '58 hood. "Minor customizing" was permitted. These little twists seem to really stand out but they were the outgrowth of anomalies in the rules that also permitted experiments such as gutted grills, tilted, "snow plow" license plate brackets, sedan delivery hydros and the 4-speed '57 Chevy combination. Farmer Dismuke slammed the door on these shenanigans fairly quickly.

Just another hiccup in the development of the sport!

c

Come on now....Stahls cars were ALWAYS white. Thats Don Grotheer (stick shift) running the Grump for A/S class. Grumpy lost. Stahl didnt make it out to the Winternationals in 66 But did beat up on Jenkins all year and won the next 3 National events. .

Definately Bill Jenkins but not Jere Stahl.....

Stahls car was white.....

They match raced at Island Dragway with their A/S'ers....

Really was no contest...Stahl's Hemi was way stronger and could catch and pass Jenkins even if he got the early lead......

Re: Flat Out Great Drag Racing Photo's

Thanks Tony.....For some reason I was sure Barkely's name was there.....

I have a good memory but there must be to much "stuff" in there after all these years.......

Did John ever set the record and have it printed in ND that way? Maybe I am thinking of a later year.

I think in 1967 we changed to H/SA? just from class break changes of some sort. Car was the same......I have a picture from Indy 1966 and I/SA is on the door....This stuff is just to long ago!

We sold it in '68 and our car was owned by Joe Scott for a while after that...

The "No Neutral Drops" sign was from Indy in 1967. That was the first event they were outlawed. Mancini's Zoom-O car wasn't built/raced until 1969. It was a Race Hemi with a steel front end. One year only "paper" car. the transmission let go while he was doing a burnout/dry hop.

I have a couple I got from Woody Hatten a long time ago. Anyone remember him. His ashes are mixed into the starting line at Indy. He was a great friend and a true car guy. He was the SS& DI photographer and wrote a few colums for the magazine. I doubt Ken would allow them to be posted on the forum though.....LOL. Pretty hot stuff and she was and still is a sexy babe. 100% real boobs and clean shaven wher it counted. My kind of woman.
