Test and tune went smoothly tonight, and the Duck Tape Volare is running right where it should, thanks to some massive efforts on the part of Tim Sloan at Sloan Racing Engines. Even had him slaving away on his birthday. ;) We've had the power all along, just hadn't had the efficiency we needed. Even after getting that squared away, the whole Calvert springs/shocks/CalTracs setup from MoneyMaker Racing kept the car glued on the radials every single pass. It's printin' tickets and carrying the wheels nicely, even with the shocks just almost full tight and running more air ni the M/T radials than I used to. Reaction times came along with it, so I finally feel like we've got what it takes to turn on some W's again at long last.
They were running Test n' Tune til 9pm (even though only advertised to go til 7, I believe). We didn't even get there till late (about 4:30), and I still got 5 runs in. Headed out around 8pm or so, and there was a significant stream of incoming trailers at the gate. Looking forward to a good weekend! I tore down the carb on the Turismo the other night, as it had swallowed something at MIR last month. Gave it a thorough cleaning, then ran out of daylight. Just need to bolt it on in the morning, (and we'll see if I helped or hurt it) :p Gonna have to do the 2-car 2-trip shuffle Sunday night, but Rockingham is only 44 miles from the house. Worth the extra trips to take advantage of the two Gold Cards. I'll probably be stupid busy between the two cars tomorrow, and I have quite a bit of decal work to do this weekend, so reports may be scattered, but I'll do my best! |

Re: Live from THE ROCK
Another sunny humid day greets us in Rockingham, NC as we begin eliminations today. The wind will also play a factor, as it has gone from hit n' miss cross-headwind to more steady and stronger...
Air at the end of Rnd 1... 85.5 F, 67%, 29.51, 3038' DA Decent turnout, think I heard around 270-280 cars... Half as many now, as Hot Rod is rolling to the lanes for Rnd 2! |
Re: Live from THE ROCK
Barometer has dropped a couple hundredths in a short time, and we're getting a couple gusts on top of the existing wind. There's talk of weather this afternoon, so we 're trying to hustle right along. Almsot done with all of Rnd 2. Should be back to the top of the order shortly.

Re: Live from THE ROCK
It's Beard and Emily Volkman in the Final for SS. Good luck to both, but I'm pulling for Emily. One of nicest and friendly groups in the Sportsman ranks, especially Larry Stott.
|
Re: Live from THE ROCK
Man! Rough crowd! In the 1/4's, I was .003 dead-on 1, Emily Stott-Volkman was .010 dead-on zero, and Mike Boyles was .000 dead-on 1! Emily proceeded to go .000 against a red-lighting Jake Sealey, and I survived a tough race with Boyles to set up a final round match with Emily and I. We were suiting up when the rumble and lightning hit (down the road). They unplugged everything, then you could see the rain coming up the track. I think we've just got SS and SR finals left to run. It's just a little cell, but it's really windy and coming down hard. Can't imagine drying for two pairs... Maybe finish at Darlington in 2 weeks? Dunno, haven't heard yet.
Mmm! More buckets of rain....! Couple big rumbles, too. Congrats to stock semi Charles Myers. Finalist's Terry Taylor and Marvin Strickland |

It stormed real bad, had to hold onto the easy-up! Quit for awhile, they got the tractor out, then it rained again. Had more cars left than I thought. All finals left mebbe?

Re: Live from THE ROCK

I got to shoe a super rod car this weekend .won 1st round against Greg Slack and the lost to Steve Furr 2 nd round by.011.....Man that sure was faster than my stocker and was fun too....But i still love stockers the best..... |
Re: Live from THE ROCK
Just got postponed til Darlington pro-am in 2 weeks.
Plan is to finish it that Sat |
Re: Live from THE ROCK
See Ya'll in Darlington. Hope that Emily and Michael get to run, but I know her husband is entered in Indy.

Re: Live from THE ROCK
It may have happened before, but I don't recall seeing one Pro-Am event needing three different weekends in three different months at two different tracks to be completed. That's really stretching it out!

Re: Live from THE ROCK
Only 1 track, but VMP in 2002 took 4-5 tries! Eddie Bolton was glad he kept going back. :p

Another abysmal showing at the track this weekend!:( But all was not lost - Michael Beard applied the graphics to the 'wagon, and it turned out even better than I hoped for! The car really looks like a "race car" now, and maybe some day it'll start ACTING like one! :o Thanks, Michael for cheering me up. And thanks also to Charles Myers and his Dad for their hospitality, it was very much appreciated. Hopefully I'll be back out again soon with somewhat better results.
I got a chance to get the camera out of the bag during the first time-trials, here a few pictures. Lew |

Re: Live from THE ROCK
Lew, What's going on with your car? What's it doing or not doing?
There's plenty of help available right here... |
Re: Live from THE ROCK
Congrats MB. Glad you got the the car where it needs to be.

Re: Live from THE ROCK
Thanks bud, and congrats on another runner-up. I know you'll make something of yourself someday! ;) Get your spacer? I gave it to Jim at Martin last week.
|
Re: Live from THE ROCK
I didnt even think of the spacer. I am not worried about it. I will it sometime.
Thanx for the props I am going to win one sometime. hopefully grow up to be like you. |
Re: Live from THE ROCK
Phil -
Rule #1: Don't spend any money. Rule #2: Don't grow up. Been doing some more thinking about your ride... consider a heat gun or temp gauge directly on the intake manifold. I'm thinkin' that's where your ET is moving around, since you said you were getting the *engine* temp the same. I see Gale Pinkston ice the intake on his Camaro every single run... food for thought. For Mike Volkman.... after studying the photo Butch posted, I'm wondering if you don't need to go *up* on the tire pressure. I've run into traction issues by running tires too low as much (if not more) than having them too high. Running them too low, you may be wearing out the sidewall before you wear out the 'tread'. |
Re: Live from THE ROCK
You mean someone was having traction issues at Rockingham? There's a surprise!

CalTracs, Calvert split mono-leaf springs, Calvert 9-way adjustable shocks, and 29.5x9 M/T Radials @ 20psi, I had absolutely ZERO problems. 60' times were 1.40-1.41 over the course of 3 days, day to night, lane to lane, even playing with launch rpm and shock settings. (I know, not too fast for a S/S'er, but I'm only running a 4.56 gear...) |
