Congrats to Mark Faul

Way to go on your win at Boise in the Div. 6 ET finals Sportsman ROC. Mark gets a trip to Pomona. Guess Mark won't be running S/SS at Pomona this year!

Hi Mark. :):):) Nice job with the 51. I also saw your runner-up in Portland in the Stock/Super Stock combo on the net. The finish looked very close. I saw Sunday, how was Saturday? Continued success to for the rest of the year. Your buddy Ron in Fife.

You're right about that, Phillip. As soon as he pulled into the waterbox for the 1st round, people in the stands started the "what if?" scenarios. Mark did his job and won all his rounds fair and square, some of them really close too, but that didn't stop the "He took a spot away from someone!" griping that continued the rest of the weekend. People were referring to the old Jody Lang rule, which I wasn't aware of, but apparently many ET racers are. I've never seen anything in print about this,, have you?
Take care,,,, Danny Durham

Re: Congrats to Mark Faul

I dont want to bash Mark on this forum, Apparently I've done that enough else where. The story from what I've heard is that Mark was invited to be on a team along with 3 others from a track that did not have a enough racers for a full team and the Division director gave him the permission to race.
The DD made the call contrary to the writen rules regarding eligibilty. I've sent an email to the DD to ask why he made this call and he claims it was a loophole that the track took advantage of. I think it's B.S, The rule was changed after 2008 when one these racers got the DD to let him and few others into the E.T finals although they had not ran the required races to be allowed. The wording in the rules will probably be changed again after this episode.

The Jody Lang rule is that a racer has to compete at a track a certain amount of track races to be eligable for that team. Jody got into the finals without participating at a track for season points a couple times. It probaly would have been fine if he had raced for his home track but he raced for a small far away track that he would only maybe race at once a year. The other teams felt it was unfair and made some rules to prevent a "PRO" from feeding on the little guy's.
Now it is 3 races to be on the team and a minimum 50% of the Summit E.T bracket series races in a season to be in the Race of Champions. The loop hole is a racer can go to a double header and double enter and the track can count that as 4 races.

The controversy is these guy's got in by going to a 3 day big buck bracket race, Double entered in a non Summit E.T series Bracket race and the track says they ran 6 out of the seasons 11 races to get the needed 50%. Total fraud but the DD says it's all good. I'll be working to make sure this loophole gets closed for good even though people are calling me a internet complainer.

Once again I am not bashing Mark, He was invited by the track and given the clearance from the DD to go so he did. I'm sure he raced his butt off to get the win and he was not there to take advantage of anyone. He raced his old 51 chev in sportsman not the stocker so at least he gave the little guy's a fighting chance, LOL.

Re: Congrats to Mark Faul

Thank you guys for the congrats posts. And thanks Phillip for not "bashing" me???

Obviously I thought I was doing everything by the book. Assured a couple times that everything was legal and good to go. Scoring a race of champions victory was something on the bucket list that I've always wanted to do. Thinking that I had met the requirements to participate, I was happy to represent Medicine Hat. Great track, wonderful people, and happy to have us. As we were thrilled to race in the ET Finals!
I had planned on taking Labor Day off and do something away from racing. Go to a lake, golf, whatever!!! But when I'm invited to attend the team race, I happily accepted, since I hadn't done it in a few years. It's a shame there's so many people bitching about it now that it's done...

Also, I sure didn't appreciate a guy getting in my face in the staging lanes before I raced his son on Sunday. Pretty much saying they were filing a grievance against me and he was going to shut me down at the front of the lanes and that I didn't belong in the race. It didn't happen, but he got in my head and I lost. Shame on me for letting him do that, but pretty classless.

Re: Congrats to Mark Faul

1st thing good job Mark!

Just to clarify.

I've never ran for a track without actually running at least one of their "points" races. This was when the rule was that you only had to be at 1 race. I've also never ran an ROC without being in the top 4 or top 2 or whatever it was back in the early 90's. Mind you, I have seen where someone was in the ROC without ever going to that track.

What I have done in the past was run at least one points race at a track to qualify for the Sunday part of the ET Finals. After awhile this rule was changed. You now have to race a minimum of 3 races just to be in the Sunday race. This has sometimes turned into 3 trips to make sure I had enough points to qualify to be on the team. When I was trying to be on Team Madras these were 10 hour round trips.

From my point of view the 3 race minimum makes no sense. It takes away potential entries from the ET Finals. Especially now when there's not many full teams competing at that race in the 1st place.

Hi Mark. :):):) Again, congrats on your win, Controversial or not. I haven't raced in years, but attend as many races as I can to visit friends. I just don't understand the problem and also having people in your face is WRONG. If you are invited by a certain track, at which you have raced, and the entry is approved by the DD then what is the problem. Shouldn't the people be upset with the DD and not you personally. I have watched you race many times and even raced against you many years ago. You did the job required and sometimes you get beat. Bottom line "Way to go Mark." Hope to talk again with you soon. Your buddy Ron in Fife.

First of all if mark was in the other lane and u called me a little guy, then said he shouldnt be there so I would have a fighting chance, and that he is a pro, what do you call the other racers "scrubs" I WOULD BE PISSED if nobody gave me a chance and thought i had no chance of winning! When mark got out of bed im sure he put his **** on just like every other racer at that track did, unless they got something fishy going on. I use to love for big name racers come to my local track to see where i stood in my program. Seems like the other racers were to caught up in a dumb rule rather than focusing on the PRO? Mark please let me know where the tracks are that the racers have no chance, that are the little guys, and cant beat the pros so i can go enter! DFWA

..................................OR!!...........i t might be because most who would complain are those that have put in their time and entry fees supporting the Summit Series, and their local tracks throughout the whole season. Just to earn points weekend and week out, in order to even qualify for the Race of Champions. They have to sit through rainouts, hot weather, breakdowns etc. some have to travel large distance, take time off from work, sacrifice weekends, repair cars, all in order to make the next point race, cause if you miss one, its hard to make it back up. Look at Woodburns schedule......It is BRUTAL, and if you make the Race of Champions on that team, YOU are already a winner!!.......These guys for the most part have only ONE National type of event , this is it. They have to earn the right to be there. When they have earned that right, then they have to take time off from work, a lot of them drive over 8 hours one way just to get to Boise. Fuel alone is huge expense. So when they have to race against someone that is just there for his first summit race of the year, hoping to pluck off another trophy, prestige, and some cash, then it does not set well with some of those that put in the time, money and effort to earn their place in that race. There were around 400 entries at that race, and 397 or so worked their tail off all season to earn the privilege of racing there. There was no loophole in the rules at all, that is just BS, The rules are right on Div 6 website, anybody age 6 and up, can read and understand them. I think that the event in Medicine hat was NOT a summit race, and the rules quite clearly state that it has to be a Summit event. Also noticed that the points on Medicine Hats web page have been removed, struck me as unusual. Trouble with that is that he forgot about his general discussion forum, and the points update thread on there. This has stink all over it. Phillip was correct in disagreeing with the DD decision, it was the RIGHT thing to do, its called integrity!

Then dont blame Mark for something most any one of the other racers would have done if they had been in his shoes. Blame the DD. He's the azz in this senario.

Re: Congrats to Mark Faul

Correct -- The problem is with the DD and the track. That being said, the DD ok'd it, and Mark won. *One* guy did his job! Go finish it at Pomona. You know you've "made it" when you have a rule change named after you. (Even if you have to share it with Jody) ;-)

Not saying right or wrong, but this is nothing compared to the old Long Island Dragway "Dream Team"! LOL You ain't seen nuthin' like that. :p

It's an issue that's come up in various forms numerous times over the years. Doesn't matter quite so much to me if they opened up or tightened up the rules (although my personal preference would be toward the latter), but for better or worse, at least *enforce* the rules on the books for a given year. I've qualified for multiple tracks or multiple classes in the same Division before (only 1 entry permitted at the time), I've qualified for two different tracks in two different Divisions (that was permitted), and several times I've been not permitted to qualify due to being Top 5 in the World (a rule that was later rescinded). I'm sure the system hasn't been perfect, but I am aware of an instance or two where the minimum race requirement has been enforced on the IHRA side. The rules vary per Division and sanctioning body, however.

Sorry for the continuation of the thread hijack... most importantly, congrats on a great driving job, Mark.

Re: Congrats to Mark Faul

For perspective, this isn't a rule that should be "named" for someone, it's similar in other divisions. In Division 2 the track operators have approved for the last several years a two-race minimum. Races have to be part of the track's Summit points series and the points sheet must be filed with the DD by...today actually. Some tracks do keep Summit points as part of their weekend or "big buck" bracket series, but that's what they choose to do to attract racers, it's all legit.

Every year a few questionable cases crop up but most are weeded out at our track operators meeting which happens the Friday afternoon before the Saturday race.

I think Jody and Mark are overrated. Why there is so much attention given to those two is beyond me....... :D

I look forward to getting out there and beating up on both of them soon.

Seriously, these guys followed the rules as they were presented to them-at the discretion of the Track Manager and Division Director.

End of story. Bitching on an Internet Forum will accomplish nothing. If it's just venting, I understand. Contact the powers that be if you have a serious problem with this.

As I understand this, no racer lost their spot because of the participation of these "so-called Hitters". ;)

Re: Congrats to Mark Faul

Savoy Racer,

I am going to preface this statement by saying I am a close friend with Mark and have had the privilege of touring the country with him for 2 seasons so lets just say I know him a little bit.

I guess you don't get it! Seven or eight years ago Mark had the guts to put it all on the line risk his house and everything he owns on going racing for a living. This is his JOB! This is different from you leaving your job in Myrtle Creek,OR and driving 8 long hours one way to Boise at $4:00 a gallon!!! Remember pal this is what you choose to do for fun, for recreation and to have a gay old time! What you don't get is this is how Mark makes his living feeds himself and pays his mortgage.

Savoy Racer I'm sure in Myrtle Creek, OR you have some sort of job. Possibly a plumber "just guessing because you talk a lot of *****" as a plumber there are certain rules and regulations you must follow, and you being able to buy gas and parts and make that long 8 hour one way drive to Boise you must be a good plumber. Well Mark is a good racer and he follows a different set of rules and regulations to make sure he can be successful and pay his mortgage just like you. I understand you are frustrated but its at the wrong guy.

Like I said I don't think you get it! You owe Mark an apology for your slanderous accusations and if you are going to come on a world wide forum and call out one of the best racers in country, why don't you have some sack and use your real name?!!!!

PS. I'm proud of you buddy! I hope you run the table in Pomona!

Re: Congrats to Mark Faul

First of all, congratulations Mark.
I do agree that the regular every weekend racers should get first dibs at the team. If none of the regular bracket racers choose to participate in "their" finals, what's wrong with the track trying to recruit additional racers to fill the vacancies?
Regardless, our division director should make sure the rules are clear.
