Thats some interesting info there, just curious was that printed before-during-or after the 68 season.

Re: Plymouth Drag Racing Guide (1968)

Moose,

I can't make out the print date, but it looks like June or July 1968.

In review, if you were running a Plymouth in Stock Class,
The Barracuda 340 was the way to go (E/S or E/SA)
Followed by the GTX 440 (D/S or D/SA)

In Super Stock,
Obviously the BO29 Hemi Barracuda (SS/B or SS/BA)
Followed by the GTX Hemi (SS/D or SS/DA)
Then the GTX 440 (SS/F or SS/FA)

Re: Plymouth Drag Racing Guide (1968)

Moose,

All winners in 1968,
both Sox & Martin SS/B 68' BO29 Hemi Barracuda's
and the 68' 440 GTX SS/F car.

Another 'Hot Ticket' for 1968,
the 68' Barracuda 'Coupe' 340,,,,,,when classed in D/SA...
A 'mini-hercules' as Motion Performance called it,
when one of their 'Car Club Members' (Jimmy Boyd) won the 1968 Nascar Winternationals @ Daytona
with a 68' Barracuda 'Coupe' 340.

PC, I was just curious on how did the Sox & Martin 1968 340 Barracuda do through out the '68 season...here's a recent photo of the restored car.

Re: Plymouth Drag Racing Guide (1968)

Moose,

Once the BO29 Hemi Barracuda's came into play, the 340 got
'third' of 'fourth billing.

I think it was raced at the 68' Springnationals, and got knocked off
by a 68' SS396 Camaro 396/325 HP (convertible) in E/SA.

I do not recall seeing it at the 68' Super/Stock Magazine Nationals
(July 1968, New York National Speedway).

It ended up with Al Farretta, 'Valley Motors' out of Altoona, Pennsylvania,
in 1969...in F/SA.

Re: Plymouth Drag Racing Guide (1968)

Here's one that slipped through the cracks.

1963 Plymouth Fury (convertible) 361/265 HP (2-Barrel)
Weighed only #3336 lbs. (Suprisingly light)

Wt/Hp = 12.59
1968 Class = J/SA

Made it to the J/SA Class Semi-Finals at the 1968 Winternationals, and 1968 Springnationals.

With the right components, they could get into the 13.80's

Guess who's car that was,,,,,,,,?????

Re: Plymouth Drag Racing Guide (1968)

1966 Indy Nationals

G/SA Class Winner

'Akron Arlen Vanke'
1963 Plymouth Fury (convertible) 361/265 HP (2-Barrel)

Somebody said it was his 'daily driver car', which had all the
'performance goodies' installed prior to the 66' Nationals.

Won G/SA Class Final with a 14.07 @ 94.33 MPH (on the brakes)
It could run 13.80's @ 100 MPH.

In 1968 not sure who owned it, but this is what it did;
J/SA Class Semi-Finals (Winternationals)
J/SA Class Semi-Finals (Springnationals)
J/SA Class Qualifier (Indy Nationals)

Re: Plymouth Drag Racing Guide (1968)

It would be interesting to know some of the other stockers that these drivers had before they moved up the ranks into the super stock & pro classes.

Re: Plymouth Drag Racing Guide (1968)

My best friend back then: John Greenwood won AHRA Super Stock National

Championship in 1972. He raced a 65 Belv. Station Wagon with 361 Two

Barrel that ran low 12's. He liked the wagon because it was very comfortable

to sleep in compared to my old 1950 White Ramp Truck. It ended up at Santa

Fe Springs Ecology Center sometime in early 90's.
