1962 Mopar 383/343 HP 'Stocker'
A 'one-time/one-year engine combination' for the 1962 Mopars,,,
It was an 'early-Mopar Racing Engine' developed at the end of 1962 for the Dodge Polara 500,,,, specifically targeted for the 1963 NHRA Racing Season and 'New' Stock Class classifications,,,,,,,,'B/SA'. The 383/343 HP 'Stocker Special' A dominant combination for Stock Class,,,from 1963 and on,,,, 1963/1964/1965,,,,,,,,,,,,B/SA in the Sedans (9.50 - 10.59 Wt/Hp) 1963/1964/1965,,,,,,,,,,,,B/SA in the Wagons 1966,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,C/SA in the Sedans (9.50 - 10.59 Wt/Hp) 1966,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,C/SA in the Wagons 1967,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,B/SA in the Sedans (9.50 - 10.59 Wt/Hp) 1967,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,B/SA in the Wagons 1968,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,D/SA in the Sedans (9.50 - 9.99 Wt/Hp) 1968,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,F/SA in the Wagons (10.50 - 10.99 Wt/Hp) 1969,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,E/SA in the Sedans (9.50 - 9.99 Wt/Hp) 1969,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,G/SA in the Wagons (10.50 - 10.99 Wt/Hp) 1970/1971,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,F/SA in the Sedans (9.50 - 9.99 Wt/Hp) 1970/1971,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,H/SA in the Wagons (10.50 - 10.99 Wt/Hp) 1972 and up,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,SS/HA in the Sedans (9.50 - 9.99 Wt/Hp) 1972 and up,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,SS/JA in the Wagons (10.50 - 10.99 Wt/Hp) Note: Once the NHRA opened up the Stock Division with Weight-to-Horsepower changes for 1968, the 1962 Dodge Model #440 3-Seat/9-Passenger Station Wagon was the desired car for (10.50 - 10.99 Wt/Hp). A dominant car for NHRA Stock Class, 1968 thru 1971. Note: From 1962 thru 1967, the Dodge Station Wagon was on the wrong end of the Weight-to-Horsepower factor, as it was in the same class with the lighter (some #300 lbs.) Plymouth Sport Fury and Dodge Polara 500. Note: For Drag Racing purposes, the Dodge Station Wagon with the 383/343 HP combination was not the desired race car at the track from 1962 thru 1967, as it was classed in the same Weight-to-Horsepower factor as the Plymouth Sport Fury and Dodge Polara 500 2-Door Sedans, both of which were #300 lbs. lighter than the Station Wagon. Note: The NHRA has since re-factored the 383/343 HP to 320 Horsepower.. |
Re: 1962 Mopar 383/343 HP 'Stocker'
The 1962 Plymouth 'Sport Fury'
With a car weight of #3271 lbs. and 343 Horsepower had a near perfect 9.54 Wt./Hp. factor. See; Dave Kempton,,,,,,"SHAKER",,,,(1966 C/SA,,,National Record Holder,,,12.97 @ 108.57 MPH as of June 1966) Doug Kahl,,,,,,,,,,,,,,'Lansing Automotive' Callahan & Sulc (Frank Iaconio),,,,'THE VILLAIN' or The 1962 Dodge Polara 500 With a car weight of #3313 lbs, and 343 Horsepower had a nice 9.66 Wt./Hp. factor See; Rick Johnson,,,,,'C/Stock Automatic' or The 1962 Dodge Model #440 3-Seat/9-Passenger Station Wagon With a car weight of #3608 lbs. and 343 Horsepower had a perfect 10.51 Wt/Hp. factor. See; Bob Burkitt,,,,,,,,'BEHEMOTH' Joe Kenney,,,,,,,'TRICK TANK' ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A 'crying shame' that Mopar didn't continue that 383/343 HP 'In-line Dual-quad' after 1962. Many more 63', 64' and 65' Plymouth and Dodge cars were out there,,,,as well as better styled cars. It was clearly a better performer in class than the 426-S 'Street Wedge' of 1964 and 1965. Maybe even brought it back for 1968, in the 383 Road Runners and 383 Super Bee's, as a 'special order option'. |

Darrell Davis, Div. 2 Tech Director and more recently Chrysler exec, ran a 383/343 wagon in the late sixties that was really fast. He could run far under the record, at will.

Re: 1962 Mopar 383/343 HP 'Stocker'
Dave,
The 383/343 HP engine was an 'early-Chrysler Race Motor', developed in late-1962,,,,,,,for the Dodge Polara 500. It could not be ordered as an engine option in the 1962 Dodge. It was strictly an 'over the counter' performance parts bolt-on application, to be fitted on the 383/330 HP engine. A few (not many) of the 1962 Dodge Polara's and 1962 Station Wagons were equipped with the 'special order' 383/330 HP 4-Barrel engine,,,,,, also known as the 'police pusuit package'. Included were; * Camshaft ((Mechanical),,,(Lift .445 Intake / .445 Exhaust,,,,, Duration 294*,,,,,, Overlap 55*) * Solid Lifters * Adjustable Rocker-Arms, w/special locking-nuts * High-Strength Steel Pushrods * Chrysler 300-J Cylinder-heads (Casting #2402557) (Closed chamber 66.5 cc, with 2.08 Intake valves and 1.74 Exhaust valves) * High-Rate Valve-Springs w/damper (100 lbs. w/valve closed,,,,,,199 lbs. w/valve open) * High-Strength Valve Spring Retainers * In-line Dual-Quad Cast Iron Intake Manifold * Twin Carter AFB carburetors (500 CFM) (1 7/16" x 1 9/16") * Special High-pressure 3-valve fuel pump * Dual-point distributor * Special Long-branch exhaust manifolds Note: In May 1966, the NHRA approved the 383/343 HP engine combination for the Plymouth 'Sport Fury' and Station Wagon. Note: In 1967, the NHRA permitted the use of the 1967 440/375 HP (#2780915) 'Hi-Po' cylinder heads on this engine. |

The earliest 383/343 example I can remember in Division 7 was a '62 Dodge driven by Jim Johnson (not THE Jimmie Johnson) of Hermosa Beach, California and later by Joe Ross. I recall that it was run regularly in 1963 and was a record holder in 1964 (see attachment). I believe that it was a Polara 2 dr. hardtop and I'm sure that it had bucket seats.

Re: 1962 Mopar 383/343 HP 'Stocker'
Chuck,
The mid-year (1962 1/2') 383/343 HP in the Dodge Polara 500 and/or Plymouth Sport Fury combination knocked off another Mopar for B/SA in 1963. In early-1963, the 'Hot Combination' for B/SA was the 1961 Plymouth Fury 'Hardtop Coupe' with the 'Optional Dodge Engine' (413/375 HP 'Cast iron In-line Dual-carbed engine). But by mid-year 1963, the secret was out, and the 'lighter' 383/343 HP cars were out-running the 'bulky' 1961 Plymouth's. |
Re: 1962 Mopar 383/343 HP 'Stocker'
Paul,
Was the 413 with the two inline fours ever a viable combo or raced by anyone? JimR |
Re: 1962 Mopar 383/343 HP 'Stocker'
Didn't Don Garlit's run a 62 Dodge with a 383 motor with inline carbs on it or was that a 413 with inline carbs, I'm not sure.

Re: 1962 Mopar 383/343 HP 'Stocker'
Jim,
When the NHRA changed the Stock Class Rules for 1963,,,,,, expanding the classes,,,,,,,,,,, Some of the early-1963 'Top Runners' for B/SA (9.50 - 10.59 Wt/Hp) were the 1961 Plymouth Fury 'Hardtop Coupe' cars. With the 'heavy' Torque-Flite casing, the cars weighed in at #3579 lbs. And the 'optional' 413/375 HP engine was a perfect fit (9.54 Wt/Hp) for the B/SA Class. With 10.0 - 1 compression, solid lifter camshaft, Closed-chamber cylinder heads with 2.08 Intake / 1.60 Exhaust, Dual-point distributor, (#1854817) Cast iron In-line Dual-carbed intake with twin Carter AFB's (400 CFM). They could run 13.50's,,,,,,,,,, In 1963, not too many racers were running the newer 1962 and 1963 Mopar cars in the B/SA Class. Seems like in early-1963, there was a 'small abundance' of 1961 Plymouth Fury's floating around (2-year old car). |

The 1962 Polara 500 383/343 HP combination started showing up in mid-1963. Jim Johnson won B/SA class at the 1963 Indy Nationals,,,with the 1962 Polara 500, 13.39 @ 105.01 MPH. In early-1963, the 1961 Plymouth 413/375 HP cars were running 13.40's, and had a hold on B/SA. After the 1963 Indy Nationals, Jim Johnson lowered the B/SA National Record to 13.07 @ 108.18. He was running as quick as the A/SA cars in 1963. After 1963, the 1961 Plymouth Fury (Hardtop Coupe's) with the 413/375 HP were no longer a threat in B/SA at Major Events. |
Re: 1962 Mopar 383/343 HP 'Stocker'
One of my favorite Mopar combinations and happy to see the Jerry Bennett / George Widuch team have success with their beautiful '62 Savoy.
I hope to see more cars with it for 2012 and I also believe it would be a great combo for SS/GT. |

In an article with a Mopar magazine Garlits told of getting a '62 Dodge Max wedge from the Dodge dealer, driving from Fl. to TX in it and winning the Stock Eliminator then driving it home to FL where his wife drove the car for a time. I have only seen one '62 Dodge with the 413 and inline 4bbl's. It was at a Mopar car show at Atlanta and was fully restored and owned and restored by an Air Force Staff Sergeant. It ran 14.30's all day long and shut down a '67 hemi car 3 out of 3 times. JimR |

Re: 1962 Mopar 383/343 HP 'Stocker'
Paul,,
Dave Kempton ran the 361/305 HP combination in 1963/1964/1965. Yes, in C/SA (10.60 - 11.29 Wt/Hp). In 1966, the NHRA re-classed the Stockers up one class,,,, The 361/305 HP (Sedans) ran in D/SA in 1966. The 383/343 HP (Sedans) which were previously classed in B/SA (1963 thru 1965) were then classed in C/SA. Which Dave Kempton ran his Sport Fury in. Dave also ran in SS/EA in 1967,,, before going back to Stock Class in 1968 with a Belvedere 383/343 HP, which ran in C/SA. |

Moose,
Doug Kahl ran the 361/305 HP combination in the 62' Sport Fury, which was classed in C/SA 1963 thru 1965. Doug Kahl was the World Champion in 1965 with the 361/305 HP, in C/SA Class. Both Doug Kahl and Dave Kempton ran the same 361/305 HP C/SA combination in the 62' Sport Fury's up until the 1965. They also ran the 361/305 combination at the 66' Winternationals, but in the 'New' 1966 D/SA Class. In 1966, right after the 66' Winternationals both Doug Kahl and Dave Kempton switched to the 383/343 HP Dual-quad combination, which put the Sport Fury's in the 'New' 1966 C/SA Class. Doug Kahl won the C/SA Class at the 1966 Springnationals with the 383/343 engine. Dave Kempton ran this in 1966, with the 383/343 HP engine combination in C/SA, and won the 1966 Indy Nationals. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/a...1&d=1268504770 A complete article is printed in High Performqance Cars Magazine May/June 1967. In it, Dave discusses running in SS/EA in 1967, where the NHRA minimum was set at 13.03,,, higher than the C/SA National Record (12.97) that he set in 1966. |
