Noob question

I've been looking at some stick shift Nova's on YouTube, and boy are these screaming little small-block cars cool or what!? However, it got me kinda curious. I noticed these cars are raced in SS/H, SS/I, SS/J, SS/K and SS/L. How is this possible? The 283 and 327 are two combinations, right? What are the others?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I'm not a racer and I don't have a rule book.

The Chevy II's and Novas that run in G,H and I are the 327/275 combos and the cars running in J,K and L run the 283/220 for the most part. I know a few that run the 327/250 combo also in J. Hope that answers your question. Ed

Yeah, thanks for the answer.

Re: Noob question

1963-67 chevy novas came with 283"and 327" engines. They also came with 4 and 6 cylinder engines. Maybe I'm looking at the rules wrong, but doesn't a 327" 275hp combo fit into F,G, and H in a 66 or 67 chevy II?

Larry Stewart Jr./Sr. run their '67 Chevy II 327/275 in F and G the last couple of years.

Is Larry's car a 66 or 67? A 67 is a natural "E" car, so I'm not sure how he runs it in "G". The 66 has a better weight break and is a natural "F", so then it could run "G"

Re: Noob question

The 1966 327 automatic supersport trim cars fall into H. The non supersport 2 door coupe falls into G. 1967 327 automatic supersport trim and non supersport 2 doors both fall into G. Either can go up or down a class.

Re: Noob question

The Chevy II that Larry and son run is a '67. Class guide lists it:
NOVA SS Auto Stick
Coupe 2 Dr (Sport) 9.28 9.53

S/SS Factor 275/307 275/299
w OEM heads

Making it a natural G car SS/G 9.00-9.49 and since you can move up or down a class it will also make F and H.

Re: Noob question

The 327/275 hp combo in an automatic is factored @ 307 in an automatic and 299 in a stick. Larry jr. has a '67 SS; however he uses a replacement head which believe it or not is only rated @ 304 due to the fact that the extra 5hp added for replacement head is only since the rule was implemented which the combination was at 299! A little crazy to comprehend but correct. Cars that run F stick or auto are usually post cars due to them being physically lighter. Larry might run F; however I can guarantee he's not even close to minimum! A '66 or '67 SS fits G with some hard work on lightening the car but will easily get to minimum in H with minimal and properly placed ballast. Any way you put it these models are in the top 5 all time for true SS'ers. Stick or Auto, cool either way!

I think they are in the top 5 with NHRA factored hp as well!

Ya, and if you put HP like that on a bogus or EFI combo most them would stay home out of shame, lol! I guess it's easier and maybe cheaper to build a new combo than actually working on the car! Problem with SS vs GT is that the real SS guys wanna work to make it faster and we don't have much choice unless we put GT on the window and join the problem, sorry I meant club! LOL

Speaking of Chevy II's, I did a photoshop a while back of a wagon I found on the web. Kinda off topic I guess, but thought I'd share it anyway.
