Turbo 350 ok in 68 Camaro?
 

Will the turbo 350 auto. transmission be legal for IHRA/NHRA? I was reading that in 68 they experimented with them in the SS cars, before
they put them in production for the 69 Camaros. Powerglide I know is the
obvious choice, just wanted to know if the 3 speed auto. was acceptable.

No, not in Stock ...Super Stock ,okay.

(Many here would argue about the PG being better)

T350/metric200 OK to use in stock with any big block combo from 67 thru 69. Not OK in 67 or 68 small block combo's, powerglide only.

Correct me if I am wrong. 375 HP should be stick only.

I forgot about the 375hp , yup it's stick only!!! for 67 & 68.

Anthony I "think" you can run the 350t in IHRA with a small block.....I know their is no such thing as a "stick only" combo anymore in IHRA. ( thank NHRA & the 85 mustang combo for that)

Ok folks,
I am looking in my IHRA guide as i type this.....
68 Camaro
Any 6 cyl to the 350 small block is powerglide and stick only...

These are all stock factors only !

396/325 =10.01 wt break
396/325 =10.17 wt break W/TH

396/350/340= 9.59 wt break
396/350/340= 9.76 wt break W/TH

396/375/385(iron head)= 8.40 wt break STICK ONLY
396/375/390(fact alum heads)= 8.11 wt break STICK ONLY

NOW to the :

350/295/290= 10.62 wt break NO TURBO TRANS LISTED

P/G and stick is all i see in the guide...

natural F car and can move to E or G with weight adjustment....


67 Camaro is a natural E car with same specs as the 68 except the wt break is 10.32

I think the 350/295/290 just got lowered in NHRA.

Doesn't IHRA lower it too,or keep the higher number? I think it is now 286.

First, I'll miss seeing you in the "stocker" lanes this year. Good luck in HR. Listed below is the phrase everyone talks about because of the auto or stick issue. It's located in the competition/horse power updates section of the IHRA site. This is the rule, not in the rule book, I think Greg was refering to in his post. I run the 85 Mustang combo and am putting my crate motor back in because this rule causes a lot of conversations at every race.

if a new mustang or challenger can runa "powerglide" a 67/67 camaro should be able to have a turbo 350 or metric,

It isn't listed like that on the NHRA website. You have to go under the Stock Car Classification files in Excel that will show what transmissions are available.

The 1968 Camaro 396/375 hp can only be run with a manual for NHRA competition in Stock and Super Stock.

The THM350 wasn't officially offered as an option (RPO) until 1969, although some 1968 327/275 Camaros did manage to get this 3-speed automatic transmission as part of an internal GM test fleet. The only way to identify if your 1968 car has an original THM350 is by transmission date code. When the THM350 was released in 1969 it outsold the Powerglide 78,849 units to 66,423. However it was only applied to 6-cylinder and small block V-8 (Z28 excepted) cars, as the high-torque Camaro big-block engines were too powerful for the THM350. The transmission model number comes from the nominal rated torque, 350 lb-ft of torque. (cut and paste from the net)

So unless things have changed since my long chat with the boys in the IHRA tech trailer 7 months ago I would assume the rule would still stand. But if anyone has more info please let me know...I will have a pile of crate motor parts for sale and a traditional stocker motor will be going together asap.

Mike, what engine are you putting back on your car?


I think it was a bad move on IHRA's part to do that rule.

I will be running the iron head GT40 combo. Not the P head combo. I know Brandon Peterson used the P head combo and it fly's. I'm adding weight and will be down in M/CM. Look forward to talking with you at a race this summer.

anyone come up with anything for the TH350 and a small block combo in IHRA? My last conversation with Mike Baker was a no but what I cant understand is if it actually came in the car it should be allowed...there is alot more things overlooked. I just cant stand powerglides...lol
