Need help putting gas in your car
Fueling Guidelines for The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
The Clark County Fire Department has approved the following fueling guidelines for the upcoming National event. Adherence to these guidelines is necessary to reduce the chance of static electricity causing a fire during fueling operations. Main Fuel Depot The container being filled and the nozzle dispensing the fuel must be electrically bonded. If a vehicle is being filled directly from the tank, the tank and the vehicle must be electrically bonded. Pit Fueling/Mixing Operations Where dispensing/mixing occurs into a metal container, the metal containers must be electrically interconnected. This can be achieved by either placed the container on a metallic floor plate where dispensing container’s fill stem is electrically connected to the plate or bonding the fill stem of the dispensing container to the fill container. Where dispensing/mixing occurs into a plastic container, the container must be placed on a metallic floor plate to which the dispensing container’s fill stem is bonded. Vehicle Fueling in the Pits When fuel is dispensed into a vehicle in the pits, the two shall be connected with a bonding wire regardless of the material that the container is made of. If you have any question please contact Craig Sanford at 661-857-0147. Classes for putting gas in your car will be on wed before event |

What a joke

Re: Need help putting gas in your car
NHRA will be selling "bonding wire" at the track for those who show up without one. lmao.

Re: Need help putting gas in your car
That is how it is done with airplanes. But I must say I have never bothered with doing it in a car.
NHRA will probably have people watching the pits and fine you for not using your grounding strap. |

Re: Need help putting gas in your car
There was a fire recently in the pits at a NASCAR race as they were dumping fuel in a storage tank on a truck. Was this at Los Wages ? ---Trevor

Re: Need help putting gas in your car
I called NHRA yesterday to find out how to get an NHRA license out of my IHRA license. I already paid $180 I think for the NHRA physical and EKG. Now she says I need to tow to another state and get a track operator and division director to sign off on it. If I do all this I probably still wont be able to figure out how to put gas in my car in Vegas or how many aerosol cans I can spray at Pomona. I think it would be best if I cut my NHRA plans off now, before I get started.

Re: Need help putting gas in your car
There was a note sent to all registered competitors for last falls race just like this.
I did make a grounding wire for my jugs and car. I also bought fuel there last fall and the VP trailer had bonding wires and they used them when filling my jugs. One of the racers parked down a few trailers from me was warned about not using a bonding wire when filling his race car by one of the NHRA guys who was driving around calling the classes to the lanes. He just informed the racer what was required but did not threaten anything. That racer did make it know around him what NHRA had told him. Most of us were aware from the email but I did not see very many racers use the bonding wires. My 2 Cents Rick Cates |
Re: Need help putting gas in your car
Actually - Clark Holroyd started selling an anti-static clip on connector for use to avoid fires - he is a life long fireman
He thought it was a real danger :-) peace |
Re: Need help putting gas in your car
I saw a S/R corvette burn due to no ground wire on fuel cell. It destroyed the back half of the vette and driver suffered some burns as well...
When i work in tech that is one of the top things on my list to check....Don't complain too much as it just may save you and your car...... |
Re: Need help putting gas in your car
If you know a local fire fighter, ask them about static electricity and fires when fueling cars.

Re: Need help putting gas in your car
Electro static pad to which you stand on, wrist strap to the human and strap to the container and car to the electro static pad. That would do it! No nylon jackets either in the pits. Rubber sole shoes manditory with SFI rating!

Re: Need help putting gas in your car
Must go hand-in-hand with telling people to take their fire extinguisher OUT of the car.

Re: Need help putting gas in your car
What about fuel checks, that has to be very dangerous in itself, getting fuel from a hot engine compartment. ?????

Re: Need help putting gas in your car
Always a good idea to put your hand on the car & container before opening or transferring any fuel, especially in dry weather. Just normal maintenance practice.
A ground strap sure won't hurt anything. |
Re: Need help putting gas in your car
always have the fuel jug or hose touching the funnel when putting fuel in the cell
NEVER FUEL CAR IN TRAILER |
Re: Need help putting gas in your car
Its not about the fuel, Its all about the FUMES !

He's right , it is a danger . Explosions and fires happen at race tracks , speed shops , and racer's garages all over America every year . And believe me , the last thing you want is to suffer serious burns . The fueling regs posted above are a good idea for every racer and track to follow . |

Re: Need help putting gas in your car
The static electricty from your body can be as high as 3000 volts of energy.
I repair various welders and most new PC boards and other components comes in 2 layers of anti-static packaging. I am also required to wear a grounding wrist strap while I work on this equipment. Inverter based welders........ I do it in the winter when it's dry.... Pop the clothes right out of your dryer in the winter or drag your feet on the carpet and touch the light switch.....Pow.... |
Re: Need help putting gas in your car
Grounding everything may seem like overkill, but I've got a good friend in the hospital right now with 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 18% of his body due to static electricity. He was under a hot rod in his shop preparing to remove the gas tank, and as a precaution the garage heat was off and there were no incandescent trouble lights or electric tools in use. The plastic creeper he was using must have built up a charge and when he reached for the last bolt a spark jumped from the wrench to the bolt and caused an explosion. He got out alive which is what's important, but he lost the garage and two collector cars.
Static electricity is bad news. |
