While this is an internet file photo, it is what I was driving (16 years old) in 1968. The interior in mine was a dark red. All else the same.

At least I could say no one else, locally, had one.
Only saw one other like it over the years. NOT fast but the cool factor of a convertible at 16.......

Charlie,,,,,,,,

What was the 1/4 mile performance test on the 68' Buick GS400.

I remember the basic GS400 400/340HP running around 15.00's @ 92 MPH.

All were automatics, I never saw a 4-speed.

Here's a factory photo of a '68 Charger being built on the production line...

http://www.redlinedodge.com/wp-conte...oke_Bottle.JPG

Quote - In 1968, two years after production officially began, Dodge rolled out a new body style for the popular Dodge Charger muscle car and unknowingly introduced what would eventually become one of the most iconic cars in American history. Sporting curvier front fenders and rear quarter panels, the ’68 model was the first Charger to feature the famous “Coke bottle” styling and was widely praised by the automotive community for its eye-catching design. Today, this particular generation (1968-1970) remains one of the most popular thanks to the Charger’s famous roll in both Bullitt (1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum) and the original TV series The Dukes of Hazzard (1969 Dodge Charger).

On a Buick website they report mid to high 15's with automatic and 2:91 gears.
One report (current owner) is a 400/4speed convertible with 3:91's that went 14.64!

Someone probably loves these things, and I was thankfull to have a new ride as a kid.

Charley A,

1968

A) Camaro, Firebird, Mustang, AMX

B) Cougar, Barracuda

C) Dart GTS

The Cougar and Barracuda could have easily been called 'Sports Cars'

The Dart GTS, 'low-budget econo-racer'

The Cougar belongs with the Mustang.

Dart and Barracuda should have been compared to the Nova/Phoenix/Apollo. IMHO

Moose,

1968 426 Hemi Road Runner

In the other post, it ran 13.20's.

I think SS & DI called it the fastest 1968 car they had tested.

Quote - Here is Martyn at the strip with a press pool '68 GTO running in the D/Stock Auto class. Note the manufacturer's license plates of the day that start with the letters GM. Martyn noted that the GM lawyers didn't take to kindly to Cars magazine's printing photos of GM cars with their tags at the strip. Remember these were the days of high insurance premiums for high performance cars and all manufacturers were beginning to downplay their roles in drag racing.

Yeah,,, I know about the rules,,,I was just offering a pacifier,, not the whole cure.
As far as the fastest smallblock in '68, I'm wondering if it was a 340 powered Mopar, maybe Colletti, as I can't think of any 350 GM cars that jumped out of the magazines back then, although Dave Strickler's Z/28 was no slouch, even though it was a 302.
I'm sure someone will chime in with some figures from '68.

Re: What's New for 1968

In 1968 for Stock Class,,,,,,,

The Fastest Small-Blocks,,,,,,,,

No doubt the Wenzil Brothers out of Merril, Michigan with their
67' 302 Z-28 Camaro in C/Stock, was the fastest 4-speed.
Running 12.30's'.

The 68' 302 Z-28 Camaro (heavier car) was classed in D/Stock.
Elapsed times were 12.45's.

On the other transmission side, Mark Coletti in the 68' 340 Barracuda 'Fastback'
running in E/SA was the quickest automatic..
Running 12.75's.

Also, Jimmy Boyd who ran a 68' 340 Barracuda 'Notchback' in D/SA
was actually quicker, but lesser known than the Coletti's.
Running 12.55's.
