Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
Hi gang -- here we are back at Atco and no one is disapointed - the performance here last weekend for the East Coast Stock - SuperStock race was just fab and today is no different .
First off today was to be Test nTune but the NHRA allowed it to be Record runs . Already set - Dave Ficcaci in his Ficcaci Racing Engines '69 Camaro B/SA went 10.08 . Brian Oakes went 8.92 in SS/BA to set the first leg of his record and will attempt a back-up soon . Here's the killer - Joe Garbarine in his brightly painted Cavalier went 9.75 @ 139 in GT/HA to set his record . All of these are pending teardown . More later as I'm a little busy today ............. |
Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
That Brian Oakes is something else.....8.92....incredible...

Nice job Brian......
We spent better than half a day yesterday with Brian..... We (mostly Matt Schurman) Installed a new Onan diesel generator in his hauler......He did say his goal for today was to set the record in B......I had no doubt he would if the weather was decent......Overcast all day with high humidity.....but apprently still pretty fast down at Atco..... |
Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
Congrats Joe, thats pretty damn fast.....
|
Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open

Congrats to all with those killer numbers...If i recall Mr. Oakes` Camaro went 8.89 at the Dutch in 2004 or so. Great job all on the reporting.

Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
guys, all the runs are on www.1320go.com
Remember nothing counts for HP or avg's unless its -1.20 under or more, per Bruce & Danny at Atlanta, i asked today while i was here to make sure. |

Well its late and after a hectic day I can finally gather my thoughts -- first , for those of you who are thinking we have mineshaft conditions here at Atco get rid of those thoughts .Today the track had teeth after they worked on it but the weather was anything but fantastic- all afternoon it was chilly and very damp .Those who went fast earned it the old fashioned way -- working hard on their combos .As the pic will show Mr.Oakes gave new meaning to "chillin" .
As you'll see from the early morning photo I took on the highway this morning it was not a nice drive over -- at one point visibility was nil at best . If you're thinking about coming over -- just do it - plenty of parking left . Gas and Diesel prices as you'll see are reasonable ( I can't believe I'm saying that ) on Route 73 near Berlin . Time to jump in my jamies and catch a nap .........later . |
Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
just courous what combo Joe G was running in GT/HA, by shipping weight of the car is throwing a blank in me
|
Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
Why is a 1 under getting the attention in SS/BA when the GT/HA went 1.3 under, is the 9.75 a misprint.

I wish we had those kind of fuel prices here in SOCAL, we have a Valero brand gas station just off the 5 Fwy at Rosecrans with diesel at $4.99.gal..total rip off............ |
Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
Nitro Joe, on 1320.go they Joe Garbarine listed in GT/EA not GT/HA. Tom

Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
Good morning - In a few hours we'll start this event officially and for many in the Northeast this is their first race of the season .First off , I'm glad to see records are still important to some of the readers and this morning they will pickup were they left off - not many events offer two day record attempts .Racers (who set a record yesterday ) have the choice of bettering that record or going thru the teardown process this morning . One who won't be here is Dave Ficcaci ( B/SA )who left last evening so he could be back at his job this morning and his father Steve will be subbing for him in the barn .
Those of you wondering about my reporting of Joe Garbarines' record --- its correct and its GT/HA . As for the combo I can only tell you its a 305 and the minimum weight was 2941.I can't swear to it but its believed to be a Fuel Injected engine .Kudos Joe - 9.75 ! ! ! This morning its again dreary and damp feeling with plenty of fog showing - hopefully it'll burn off some . ClassRacer will be covering for you and the Nikon will be clicking ........Later . |
Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
Thanks Jack for taking your time to keep us informed. Unfortunely I have a wedding to attend this week-end, so won't be taking pictures in Atlanta, but planning on being in Jackson on the 19th. Will definitely be using my phone for updates on saturday and tonight.

Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
Because of the damp conditions we are on hold at this moment - tech is open and hopefully in an hour ot two we'll get on the track .........
|
Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
Joe, its the same combination that Dave Layer runs, unlike you, when you ask a question I give you an answer. Thanks for telling me if Richs other combo, if he was the only person running it......lol.

National opens are not LODRS events

Re: Live from Atco , NJ - NHRA National Open
Stock and Super Stock are done with their first time shot. They are running super gas now and they just called the top classes. I do not now how many cars there were in stk/ss, I think Jack will have more indo on that.
No qualifying here Angelo, so only the 1.20 under will get you hp. The weather for this mornings runs was as follows. We started abut 10:30. Temp 66 Hum 70 Bar 29.84 DA 1300 Slight tail wind 2-4 mph. Here is a in car of Mike Ficacci diving Anthony Bongiovanni's Cobra Jet 4.6 3 valve in SS/LA this weekend. I have lots of photos and will post later. |

This morning a tribute was held in honor of the late Ron "Uncle Buck " Harpel who passed a few weeks ago - he was crew chief on George Downhausers car and a friend to a great many racers and fans . George made a slow single this morning being the first car down the track .A fitting goodbye to a friend of racing ........we'll miss him forever .
Ron is shown doing what he loved best in the last photo ................... |

1320go.com shows Garbarine also going 9.55 and 9.58 later in the day (yesterday).
That's nearly 1.50 under the GT/HA index (-1.80 under the old indexes).... As Joe Franco stated.... that's super fast! All I can say is..... congrats!... and thanks!...lol |

Well today proves that lightning can strike twice in the same spot -- proof -- for the second time that I can remember the activities had to be stopped at Atco because of pollen blowing on the racetrack .Nope , I'm not smoking something funny -- we were down several times today so the officials could "clean " the track of the pollen that blew on from trees on one side .Probably lost a total of two hours ..........................Mother Nature wasn't kind to us ........
We're done for the day ........I'll be back after dinner with more photos .And I did manage to get my hands on some qualifing sheets . |

The cars the that came in late got to make the clean up runs and everyone is done for the day.
The morning air was good, but went down hill fast. It went up to about 2600ft, but at Atco thats usually not a bad thing. Temp was 86 and bar was falling at 29.71. Afternoon times were slow, I was very impressed with Steve Swaka's 9.84 at almost 135 in CC is this air. Not only are the new cars kicking my butt, I can't even hang with the old cars. Here is a in car cam from Frank Bialas's 70 GTX |
