Best place to set record
It seems that the "value of national records" has diminished over the years. .I am just curious where might be the best place to set a record... Setting the national record is still a "big deal" to me (guess that is because I'm old LOL) It used to be Tucson (switched to IHRA) and Boise....also a bunch set in Kearney, NE...ATCO is wicked fast...Sonoma might be the place..."No Problem" is fast....Pomona is down hill...but National events only ..what do you think??? (For conversation purposes).

Re: Best place to set record
Mission can be fast but with a May date for the D6 race it's very dependent on weather...witnessed the first 7sec. SS run there and Hemi cars use to flock to that race to put up a good number.
Valdosta has been the site of many records, SS/AH and many others. Also, any of the early D2 races can be fast when temp and unbelievable barometer readings show up. |
Re: Best place to set record
The best place to set a record is at a national open. Your et will not effect the AHFS unless you go 1.20 or more under.

I especially dont understand the reasoning why there is such a large trigger at a National Event. I would think that the spectators in the stands that could relate to cars that look "normal" would like to see the true potential of stock and super stock cars. |

Valdosta in November

Re: Best place to set record
As jmcarter said. The first D2 race or as Horace & Stephen any D2 November race. These two races should really be at Orlando or Bradenton for best results as the weather is just mine shaft. They usually include a tailwind.
Ron Ortiz U/SA yes, it get cold in FL. |

Best place to set a record? How about Bristol? ;) Then you can open it up a little more without feeling too guilty. |
Re: Best place to set record
We used to get points for setting a record. ET record was same points as winning one round, MPH was half that. Didn't have these bogus soft indexes either. Made a bracket race out of it. About anything will run under these indexes if you have a clue at all. Don't have to be fast to go rounds any longer.

Re: Best place to set record
Montgomery, AL in November/December was crazy fast. Tons of records set there back in the day.

Cecil County Md.Anyone with a level can tell you why.
41 more to go. |
Re: Best place to set record
Well, if you want to be really impressive doing it, you can do it in August at Bowling Green, when the temperature is 95 degrees, the relative humidity is around 85%, and the barometer reads around 29.4".

Good job, Jack. And don't forget, Dave Casey did it with his Camaro, as well.

Re: Best place to set record
I think Cecil Frazer set one there too
It is nice to have that certificate from the track where you made your first 1/4 mile run when you were 16 or 17. Also have one from New England Dragway |

Re: Best place to set record
The places that have been mentioned can certainly be fast, temperature is so important. Ed mentioned Cecil County, if there was a spring or fall event there it would be incredible. As Ed alluded to, it is downhill, but so is 4wide/concord , and that place could be in the same group with cool temps and a high press system. MIR is very fast also.
sea level, cool temps, high press system and throw in a tail wind and bingo, big numbers Yes when you set the record, you have achieved something that no one else has at that point in time, and don't forget that you also have added credibility to your run by tearing down. Setting the record doesn't (in my case in A/S) mean you have the fastest car in the class. Last year I was 4th out of 5 fastest at Indy in my class. Winning class at Indy when there are tough cars in attendance is still very important on the performance meter. Best place to set a record, my favorite is Maple Grove, nice facility to tear down at and the dutch is a big event and can be fast, it is not the fastest though. |
Re: Best place to set record
I'm always impressed by records that are set in less than ideal conditions, so any record set in July or August at a non-factored track always impresses me.

Re: Best place to set record
I think since a select few CRIED about altitude tracks and got the % changed on the correction factors for a few tracks its time to start sending letters to NHRA about Records being set at National Opens with Bogus Conditions and maybe NHRA should do a reverse factor for tracks with a Sealevel or below condition with a 31 Bar. whats fair is fair right !! : )

Suffolk VA - 1st week in November. The Little Guy Open
Sorry, just like remembering the "Good Old Days" |
Re: Best place to set record
Well, I started this thread, so I might as well add some fuel to the fire...LOL... In yesteryear the final round counted as a record run. Right or wrong??? If nothing less, it helped eliminate the "soft combos"....it kind of worked like the AFS today. What about any "heads up" run in a National Event triggers a National Record (and tear down)....again, for conversation purposes only.

Re: Best place to set record
At the right time, when the barometer tips slightly above 30.05 and first session in the morning at either Woodburn Oregon, Seattle Washington or Mission British Columbia, it can be mind boggling. I have been there at all three tracks here in Division Six. All three tracks are within about 175 ft of sea level with lots of oxygen in the air. All the time and effort you put into your combo is rewarded and the fix you get from drag racing lasts well into the next week. Ha Ha.

Re: Best place to set record
How do you guys feel about someone's hard earned, well deserved, national record being wiped out by the "minimum" after a length of time goes by? I have no dog in this fight, but I always thought a record should stand until its truly broken by a quicker or faster car. My 2 cents.
