Run them in both of the cars I race. Usually get about 5 years out of them

There are a lot of Optima haters, but I'm not one .
I usually swap mine out every three years, and us the take outs on my beaters or used cars.
Just follow the proper charging procedure and they will live a long time.
Also be aware red tops are designed for cars with functional charging systems to get optimum performance.

Tom, are the Yellow Top batteries better suited for set-ups not using a alternator and charging between rounds?

I've been using the Red Top's in just about everything I own since 2003 with no major issues. As Tom said, just follow the proper charging procedure and you should get good service out of the Optima batteries.

You also might want to look into the new charger that Optima is supposed to bring out this summer, as it may add some life to the batteries you have.

count me among them.

Tried a red top once, never again. Will use nothing but AC Delco 78DT as I have for the past 20 years.

Have used both yellow top with no alternator, now using red top with alternater. Had one red top short out internally 5 years ago, could have been a serious problem if I had not caught it right away and got it uphooked and out of the car, but guess that could happen with any. They have 3 year warrenty and readily available at advance auto.

Thanks Tom. About 6 months ago I was given a Red Top battery by a friend of mine that owns the local NAPA store. About 5 years ago he gave me a battery that looked just like the Optima battery with a black casing and a NAPA label on it. He told me when it gets older and started to wear out, bring it back and he would replace it and that's what he replaced it with. I guess next time I replace it I'll ask him to get a Yellow Top. He's giving them to me for nothing so I'm not going to abuse the priviledge.

What is charging procedure for Red Top/Yellow Top. I just charge them
both @ 6 Amps at track and 2 in shop when not in a hurry.

Never had problem....but would like to know the right way.

Thanks,

GTX John

I've had friends with success and others who cant get them to take a charge after a while. We've used the Odyssey pc925 7 years with a 12.2:1 SBC. 900 runs in the last 4 years and trickle charge during the week..never charge at the races while running an alternator. We start and shut down at least 3 times per time trial moving up in the lanes...if not more. It's NEVER let me down and it's lighter weight than a red top.
