NHRA approves a new "Dime Rocket"!

I guess I'm slipping. I've apparently got to start checking the guide for recent additions every week! 1986 Chevy or GMC pickup truck 350/165 factored to 165! That is one heck of a gift for a wanna-be Stock racer looking for that ten cent, throw it together combo! It is a U/SA combo that might not even be able to get light enough for T. Q-jet (size NA) 390/410 cam, 624 head, 055 intake (same as 305) with a HP factor 5 HP less than a 2V 283. The same basic combo in an 81 Camaro (10 ccs less in chamber) is factored to 287 HP!
One showed up at Branerd Div. race and went -1.32 before being tossed for wheelbase!
Looks like the newbies aren't the only combos getting soft factors these days!

Can this 350 run in SS/GT ?

Re: NHRA approves a new "Dime Rocket"!

No truck engines in SS or GT the way I read it.

I need one of those trucks!!

Mark, I think you're right!

Ken, I don't think that truck motors are allowed in GT.

I seriously considered this combination (it's been in the guide for some time now) but I decided that as slow as I am at completeing projects, the thing would be in K by the time I got to the track.

That and I found out how difficult it is to find a really nice one for a decent price. They're more popular than I thought.

I think you can run truck motors in the Gt truck classes. Gt/ta/tb/tc/td

If you will do a little research, that 165 HP is actually a HO 305, just like the '85 -86 Camaros. Still a very good combo, rated 263 HP in a Camaro'

Re: NHRA approves a new "Dime Rocket"!

Considering that the 4.3 V6 in the 86 truck is rated at 192 HP (R/SA) I think the 350 is a winner!
Also the cam lift is . 430 or OEM whichever is greater (Jeep is .439)

Re: NHRA approves a new "Dime Rocket"!

Randall Campbell called me Saturday and we have one in the process, going to start with low budget version. There is a truck about a half mile from me that had already been catching my eye for 4.3 4 speed in T/Stock but 350 4 speed in U would be even better. But right now I don't even have truck to get malibu to track have to borrow my Dad's which works out since he's not racing right now,so another race car would not make much sense.

Its a flat top 305 --- heck yeah at 165 hp! Will IHRA accept this factor also? I am looking for a vehicle to drive in and run, was thinking 87 cutlass but this is much cheaper.

NHRA says it's a 350 ..No 305 listed for 86 truck

Re: NHRA approves a new "Dime Rocket"!

There is no 350/165 engine specs only 305/165 specs. I'm sure it will be corrected, unless we just dream up our own 350 specs :) which will lead to 10 or 12 short bed chevy trucks at each race. Don't think a 624 head lasted past 82 but I really don't care. Just would like to see engine specs before buying one.

Mark if you look in the tech guide you will see that the 165 HP is a 305.

Daran, it is a 350. You have to look under '86 Chevrolet Truck...it's under a separate heading.

Thanks never noticed a truck only list. I think there is one down the street for cheap, I still want a daily driver that I can run association and IHRA races, that would work!

I just brought home a 2.5 T minivan instead, I believe the fuel mileage will be better and it was just too nice to pass up. Chevy might get 14-15 mpg and turbo may get 22-25 maybe :)

Billy is that for the q jet or throttle body engine? I have a beautiful 86 truck step side body and frame I think the guy is going to quit on the project.

I don't remember ever having a 350" 1/2 ton 1986 pick up through my shop. All 305" Q Jets. Only 350" I ever saw we're 3/4 ton or heavier. That must be a mistake. I have re-built a train load of Q Jets for those, all 1/2 tons I ever saw we're 305"s. 165 HP 350"? LOL

jump on in u/sa boys the water is fine... and bob shaws caddy will still cover the truck by over 1/2 second... and the truck looks stuck in u/sa (i can hide in t/sa when the caddy comes around )

anyway let me know where the first class race you all is going to so i can come and help you boys start loading that bed up with horsepower :)

at least i THINK i saw one of those once it wasnt just a paper production car er.. truck :)

jack

and since they no longer have seperate classes that 430 cam lift stuff is bull**** !!!!!!!!!!!

Jack, I don`t think Bob caddy will run in the 11`s, the 350 is the same basic motor as my 78 malibu wagon, if i ran it in h/sa 287 hp,12.15 index. u/sa weight 3470, i/sa 79 maibu wagon weight 3470, Tom

I though Bobs caddy had the 350 olds motor in it.

Billy Nees 06-10-2012 06:28 PM

Re: NHRA approves a new "Dime Rocket"!

Dennis, I think that Tom is referring to the Chevy motor. In U/SA, the truck would have to weigh 3470, the same as the Malibu wagon. The only difference between the 2 combos is about 10 ccs in the head. And no, I don't think that even Bobs Caddy could run mid 11s but I think that a professionally done truck could.

Yep that could be it.

Re: NHRA approves a new "Dime Rocket"!

Of all the dime rocket combos mentioned on this site during the last year, which single combo gives the best bang for the buck ? I'm talking a consistent combo which would be effected the least by weather changes, etc. Running a lower class stocker I see first hand how conditions affect my 2bbl. equipped motor, especially when the heat and humidity sets in ! A question for all the "rocket" engineers.

First post on here. This is the class I've been looking at for my El Camino. I guess an '80 with the 229 isn't a very good package.
