How are doing Jim? I met you up at Stanton, Mich. several years ago. Are you referring to the Johnny Griffin that was from N. Carolina who used to race an Olds "98" in Stock? Was that "98" the same car you own now?

Yes, this is Johnny Griffin from Raleigh, NC who raced the Olds 98 in pure stock and stock with us for years. Passed away yesterday morning, presumably of a heart attack. I just ate lunch with him a couple of weeks ago. Talked racing the whole time. Same old Johnny, nothing had changed. Truely shocking news for all of us. From all your local racing friends, we will miss you my friend. Rest in Peace.

Rest in peace Johnny. You will be missed. Jim
Jim Wahl 6 Time National record Holder 2239 BF/S I miss Buster Couch also! 'cause Div.2 will always be "Buster's Rebels" |
I grew up watching Johnny Griffin and many others from the 1975s-80s. It was an honor to race against the "Tanker" with Jim Woods driving it in the '90s. I didn't know that the Summerton's car was the same one. Good cars seem to stay around, and we will always have memories of the good people. Sincere condolences to Johnny's family and friends.

Hate to hear about Johnny passing. I saw him race at Roxboro many times. That Olds was a real neat car.

Johnny was a cool Kat....he will be missed. When I was just a little boy he would let me ride with him from the trailer to the staging lanes in his velour seats! He'd also let me wander around his little car lot in downtown Raleigh. Goodspeed Johnny and I'm sure you are racin on the Best track now!

He sure was a cool cat! I saw him in the lanes at Bristol one time with the air conditioner blowing in that big Olds. He was always a class act!

Another fellow you'd many times see with Mr. Griffin was Ray Head and his, I think, V/SA Chevy. Is he still around?
|
Ray Head suffered a stroke about 11 years ago and has not been able to race since. He is disabled and spends his time watching tv and keeping up with racing and his friends. I talk to him weekly and keep him up to date.
