72 Maverick
I was wondering if anyone here is running a Ford maverick in NHRA Stock eliminator ?
I have a mustang bracket car but was thinking about building my 72 Maverick into a Stock Class Racer. |
Re: 72 Maverick
I had a V/SA Maverick until a couple years ago; roller is for sale in the classifieds here. There are no Maverick stockers active in NHRA competition that I'm aware of.....there are 2 Comets; northwest racer Brian Seaberg from Washington with a 302 combo(Q/SA), and Jack Larsen's V/S in Illinois. The 302 isn't the best choice if you want to go very far under the index. Great Crate Motor potential in IHRA.

Re: 72 Maverick
Make that 2 comets in Div6, Jason Biscay had one also. I'm not sure who owns it now but it has been out the year. Neither of them run very far below the index

Re: 72 Maverick
Bad part is 2 bbl only.
never understood why they did not make a 4 bbl performance model. I have owned 7-8 comets and mavericks in my past and loved them |
Re: 72 Maverick
But they make great "Dime Rockets"!

Re: 72 Maverick
Robbie is from Phoenix, so IHRA isn't a viable option..I'm sure he'd like to race at Firebird Nat's and Div's.
The 2 bbl 302 is okay here during the winter months anyway. I would suggest building it as a good 9" tire car, but then use a low rated EFI combo for Super Stock, where you can use a transbrake. There is a nice one in Div 1 done similarly. Robbie, call or write if you want 602-769-0346 markyac@cox.net |
Re: 72 Maverick

Would a 4dr have an advantage over a 2dr? |
Re: 72 Maverick

Thanks guys, you have been a big help.
Thanks Mark. I will be talking to ya. I know you would be a BIG help. |
Re: 72 Maverick
Ford put a 4 speed transmission in the later model 75-77(?) models, 4th gear was not a 1:1 drive ratio something like .85:1 overdrive, which was the going thing back then. The F100 and F150 had the same setup and those transmissions look like a 4 speed top loader but with different gear ratios. A lot of people are putting that setup in Cruisers and older Muscle cars. I have done 3 or 4. JPT turned me on th them, just getting harder to find good cores.

Re: 72 Maverick
Early Falcons , 63-65 era, had a Dagenham 4 speed behind the 170 6 cylinders. The OD 4 speed toploaders drove thru the cluster in overdrive and arent real strong. The weakest have bushings on the cluster & the better ones {used in vans }have needle bearings. Doesnt mean you have to run the original one though. I meant for street use

wouldn't that make 'em a 4speed? btw, those od trans' are getting scarce to find parts for... |
Re: 72 Maverick
As someone said, the maverick will be tough in stock with the 2bbl which is why we went with Super Stock. We put a clone 289/210/210 motor in Jamie Schoenly's '72 Maverick here in D1 from spare parts lying around from my 289. It's not far under the index yet but it is a cool looking super stocker! I've never really looked into EFI combos, that's an idea..

Re: 72 Maverick
How about a Maverick with a Boss 302 got GT? A 351 C would be fast but won't clear spring towers and get a good set of headers on it.
