Tom Ellison
Tom Ellison of Ellison's Engine Service in Cincinnati, Ohio passed away yesterday after a short battle with cancer. His machine shop built many class engines for Stock, Super Stock, and Modified in the 60's through the 80's. He was 71.

Re: Tom Ellison
Very sad news, I can remember when i started racing years ago seeing countless of stockers and superstockers with the ELLISON MACHINE logos painted on them. Our thoughts are with his family...

Re: Tom Ellison
Thoughts and Prays go out to Tom's family. Tom and Mike did a lot of work for my Dad over the years.

Re: Tom Ellison
Tom was a wonderful human being and a good friend. He will be missed.

Re: Tom Ellison
Todd, is that the guy that helped you put together an engine during Indy, so you could make first round?
|
Re: Tom Ellison
RIP Tom. A good man and engine builder...

Re: Tom Ellison
Yes Jim, he worked with me for 2 days in 90+ degree heat to get another engine back in the car. We had to finish a shortblock, fix 4 bent valves in the heads, and built an oil pan. At 70 years old. He was great, and the only reason I made it back. It was an experience I'll never forget. Just wish I could of held up my end by getting past first round. I only got to know him for a short time, but he left a lasting impression on me that I'll always remember. RIP Tom, and God speed..

Re: Tom Ellison
As you can see by the shirts and the decal on the fender. Tom was one of the best back in the day many good and fast racers used his shop.

Re: Tom Ellison
Prayers and thoughts for Tom and his family...Recall seeing his shop mentioned with many racers on the National Records page in Dragster over the years...and on many Div-3 cars as well when I ventured there...
Think he was Truman Fields engine source during his hey-day...... |

Re: Tom Ellison
Tom was not only an incrediable engine builder, machinest, and racer but also an incrediable man. I was lucky enough to work at Ellison Racing engines with him for a few years and he became a father figure to me. He always knew what to do and say. I was and still am truly honored to have known him.

I would like to thank everyone for the such kind words that you all have for my uncle.
My Uncle was a truely blessed man, and we were all blessed for having him in our lives. |
Re: Tom Ellison
May he rest in peaceful. Thank you todd for this great story. I honestly don't personally know you all but I get it. That must've been the best feeling in life getting all that work done for a round of racing.

I am sorry to have missed this information. I am sorry for the families loss and drag racings loss.
I own Truman Field's Hard Times '68 Ram Air Firebird. Tom built the motors that powered it through C and D/S class wins at INDY from '71 thru '79. It set national records and was the '73 Stock Eliminator winner at INDY as just a few of the accomplishments that combo achieved. The car still contains an Ellison motor under the hood. He and his work will be missed by this Pontiac enthusiast. Mark |
Re: Tom Ellison
Hey guys, I'm trying to get some old pictures of the cars my uncle built engines for. If anyone has any, could you please post them. And if doesn't bother anyone , I was planning on putting them on Facebook. Maybe start an Ellison Engine Facebook page.

Re: Tom Ellison
Eric, send me a message with your email address. I have several pictures of the Hard Times car from the 1970's. And I have a great shot of SS/K 455 HO GTO that Truman ran back at its first race at Milan when it set the SS/K national records.
Many of the files are two large to load onto this sight. But I have pictures going back to 1970 that Truman has supplied me or came with his cars when I bought them. Mark |
Re: Tom Ellison
I've got a .065 400 pontiac shortblock that he machined for me that I haven't put together yet, saving for a good set of heads for it. He was a good man and I miss him.
