"Live" from the 2012 Cobra Jet Showdown at Milan Dragway
 

Over 41 Cobra Jet owners showed up to race in the 2012 Cobra Jet Showdown at Milan Dragway. Three classes have been set up for this years event.

Classes include:

• Super Stock for the 4.0L Supercharged Cars
• Top Stock for the 2.3L Supercharged cars and 2013 2.9 liter supercharged car
• CIC Class for all other Cobra Jet combinations

Gardner Stone has not raced in 40 years but purchased a Cobra Jet and attended Roy Hills school yesterday for Cobra Jet owners. he earned his license and plans on running in the top stock class in the showdown.

Skillman Performance Ford is at the Showdown with several cars in Super Stock and Top Stock class. This will also be a test for the BIG GO next week.

Jimmy Ronzello's SS/CA Cobra Jet will run in the CIC class. This combo is the 5.4L engine with the 2.3L blower.

Special thanks to rocknrolla, great job on the live reporting. Well it has been a great day. Very laid back and with nothing but friendly racers to talk to. Tech was smooth and uneventful.

We have run two qualifying runs and should be getting a third very soon. I don't have any of the numbers, I have been very busy working on my ride. I did here that Chris Holbrook went I 8.99 in Top Stock and Charlie Downing went a 10.85 in the cic race.

I will be back later with some more happenings at Milan.

I know this is a little off topic, but I had to share. Evan Smith got me and Mike Ficacci a tour of Jack Roush's airplane hanger at Willow Run Airport to see his ultimate performance machines today.

Below are two of Jacks prize possessions. A P51 Mustang B and P51 D. Evan knows Jack very well and was able to setup a special tour for me and Mike. Although Jack was at a race and could not be there, his crew chief, I guess that's what you would call him gave us a tour I will never forget. We were able to sit in the fighter planes and get a real feel for what the pilots had to work with in WWII. I was blown away with the technology of the 40's. I know the P51 was arguably the best fighter of WWII and I can see why. The planes are in amazing condition. The crew chief told us Jack flies his P51's weekly. Evan has even been lucky enough to fly in one. Jack took him on a ride he will never forget.

I hope you all enjoy the pictures, for me it was a dream come true just to sit on one. I am a big fan of all of the hardware from WWII, especially the fighter planes.

Back to racing, first round starts at 9 am. I have never run a cic race, and can’t wait for first round.

Will do Larry, see you at Indy. Greg, I felt like a kid looking at a muscle car for the first time. There was so much to absorb about the planes. Sitting in the cockpit know young man killed and died in these planes was a very surreal experience. I could only imagine what it felt like to dual it out with enemy fighters knowing you could be dead at any minute.

First round for the Ford Showdown is complete. Here is an in car of me racing our very own and loveable Charlie Downing. Charlie has one bad CJ, I never had a chance.

Wow Ken, thanks for the pictures, five years ago I met Colonel "Bud" Anderson in Oshkosh, where I was honored to talk to him, at that time he was telling us that Jack Roush had found and purchase is original "Old Crow" and was at the time rebuilding it completly. Imagine that 95% of the young men and people who worked on that project are now gone how it must of felt sitting in that seat. Bud Anderson best friend Chuck Yeager wasn't too bad of a pilot either. Too bad you didn't get to talk to Jack Roush because he's become quite the pilot with over 3.000 hrs of flight time with 800hrs in his P-51, to put in perspective, the normal hours a person works in a year is 2000hrs considering the time he puts in his race teams and all his business interest, it's incredible. A big thank you to all the competitors and congratulations to our class winners, Ray Skillman, Chris Holbrook, and Charley Downing!

I spoke to fans who drove many hours to see these cars run all out. It was exciting for everyone.

We had over forty cars, five new competition license holders, over $6000 in payouts, and some amazingly close racing.

We plan to do the Showdown again next year in Bradenton and Milan. See you there!

I just got home from the shootout and had a great time!! Thanks to Jesse for putting this all together and to all of the competitors for putting on a great show. I can't wait for Indy.

One bit of advise for everyone, don't wear a Tasca hat & shirt while taking a photo of one of the awesome Candies Family's CJ's!! I learned my lesson...LOL;)

Probably a VERY accurate statement as the T-Bolt was not sold for street use and neither is the "new" CJ. The 68 CJ's were sold for street use, I even had one once.

rocknrolla, I just noticed a '68 Barracuda racing besides the '64 T-Bolt, was this event opened to other race cars as well, or is that just and older pic from another event...so lets see'em if it was from the Cobra Jet Showdown.

Hemimoose, The Cobra Jet Showdown was held on the same weekend as the NMCA Muscle Car Nationals event. That photo of the Thunderbolt and the Hemi Cuda was taken when the NMCA nostalgia Super Stock class was running. That was the only photo i took of the NSS class. I added a photobucket.com filter to make it look like a vintage photo...photobucket has added alot of cool filters that make images look unique.
