Theoretical Dime Rocket question
Just trolling for ideas and suggestions, let's say you wanted to build a Dime Rocket, but
a) has to run well at higher elevation (most tracks in the area 3000-5000ft) and b) prefer automatic transmission Given those two parameters, what would you recommmend? I have a project I gave up on and may reclaim, plus another option in my grasp, but just in case they won't do, looking for ideas... |

PM Jeff Interlicchia about that combo, he is the record holder with a 95 5.0

Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
The 1994 Mustang 5.0 looks like a good combo.
In P/SA it has to weigh 3578 lbs with driver. 13.45 index. If I upgrade my '95 Pure Stocker this winter it will become a '94 P/SA car. |
Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
Turbo something. Look for Buick or Pontiac if you want RWD or Mopar if you want FWD.

Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
Buick Regal' T-Types both with and without intercooler and Pontiac Firebird Formula or T/A 301 turbo.
|
Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
Forgot all about the 301 Firebird. The motor may be hard to track down, but those bodies are all over the place up here for $500 or less.

Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
not so hard, good mile high car. I bet Billy knows where to find 301 parts !

Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
I've been playing with a 200 in a Fairmont with Billy's guidance, but if it doesn't pan out of get the HP fixed I'll be looking to start over. That Monza is a great idea for sure, alot of Buick V6 support out there. I'd think I'd want to stay away from small carbs or turbos for consistency sake, right?
|
Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
I don't know about consistancy being an issue with turbo 301's. Ask Rick Unterseh in D7 (member here) for his tally this season and last. Or Neil Smedly who won class, #1 qualifier and the event with his 301 turbo at a national event. Actually, if you think about it, a turbo car in altitude should be more consistent as the engine is not "struggling" to breath air from one pass to another.
And finding 301 turbo engines? Piece of cake. Most people couldn't throw them far enough! |
Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
Ok Jeff, I see what you're saying. Looks like a viable option, and from what I am reading the motor was severly detuned at the factory for the crappy gas and lack of knowledge of how to treat turbos at the time.
That said, who is a go-to 301 guy, should I choose to ultimately go that route? |
Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
Both Neil Smedley & Rick Unterseh are members here. send them a PM. If you can't find them, send me a PM & I'll give you contact info. These are low RPM engines.
|
Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
OK, sent them messages, now I ask about one other motor: the Buick 252 V6, 4bbl.
I found one in an 82 Grand Prix. IF I went this route, any ballpark for converter/gear? |

Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
Buy Yac.s Monza, you can not build any car cheaper than it. Its a V-6 4 bbl. !!

Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
No offense, but I'd really like to build one myself. I know it'll cost more, but I have a mechanical background, and for me building will be a big part of the fun.

Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
I completely understand your thought of building your own but how about this. Say you buy someone else's dime rocket you will likely end up re-engineering, refurbishing or rebuilding the whole thing over a period of time anyhow hence you built it. In the meantime because you only put pennies out of your pocket or so you thought when you started this whole thing you can build from scratch the car of YOUR dreams and when that's done sell the dime rocket and put that chump change towards say a nice enclosed trailer. Just another spin on things that's all.

Re: Theoretical Dime Rocket question
Point well taken.
