Chuck Nelson Passes Away
Today, my good friend and Division 4 Tech director Chuck Nelson passed away. I have known Chuck ever since I have been going to a drag strip with my dad. He was a great person, and did so much for the sport of drag racing here in Division 4. I had the time of my life driving his Aspen wagon and now his Aspen coupe.
Friend, you will truly be missed! |
Re: Chuck Nelson Passes Away
Most in the Divison have known about his health issues for quite some time, but it is always a sad day when you lose someone like Chuck. I am glad that he finally is without pain and suffering. He will be missed by all Racers who knew him from all Divisions.
He never failed to give me a hard time. I remember a couple of years ago at the Dallas National Event, I had just won the fifth round and when I pulled up on the scales he looked at me and said "are you lost?, this is for the round winners!!). God Bless Chuck, we miss you already R J Sledge |
Re: Chuck Nelson Passes Away

Re: Chuck Nelson Passes Away
So sorry to hear this. Always enjoyed my visits with Chuck. Always went to the scales to shoot the breeze with him before things got started. He sometimes helped Red tech my car during record tear downs. Always pleasant. Told me at the Tulsa race this year "Ed, I know your it's your car pulling on the scales from the sound. I don't even have to look up." Was not sure how to take that one. :-)
Chuck will certainly be missed. Really good guy. |
Re: Chuck Nelson Passes Away
For all that knew Mr.Nelson knows that he was truly one of the good guys. He did so much behind the scenes for me, my family, and Buckner Boys Racing there is no way I could ever repay him. Luckily I got to talk with him and his wife when he went in the hospital Friday night, and will never forget it. I know God will take care of our friend and his family. Prayers for all.

Re: Chuck Nelson Passes Away
I am sorry to hear of Chuck's passing. He was a real gentleman and a friend. Working with Chuck at several National events over the years let me see why he was so well liked within NHRA and especially in Division 4. He was a wealth of knowledge concerning not only NHRA's history of the tech department but also the early days of Mopar racing. I can remember the gleam in his eyes as he told his Mopar max wedge and hemi stories. Yes, Chuck was always a pleasure to work with. He will be truely missed by many.
Rest in peace my friend. Travis |
Re: Chuck Nelson Passes Away
My memories of Chuck go back to the late 60's when my dad and I were running his stocker. He had known Chuck, Red, and Bill Carlisle for years. They always gave us fits when teching the car cause my old man just couldn't keep from agitating all of them. I'll never forget we were going through tech in Houma, LA around 1969 or 1970. Red and Chuck got the idea that they were going to make all the stockers come through tech with the the headers closed off. Back then stockers had to have the exhaust system with mufflers on the car. We had a crossover pipe between the collectors attached to the exhaust system, with no flanges on the collectors. We put beer cans over the ends of the collectors and tightened them down with hose clamps. We pulled through tech at an idle. When Red saw the beer cans he made the old man rev the motor and both the beer cans shot off the headers and went flying behind the car, almost hitting Chuck. They just frowned, shook their heads, and waved us on through tech.
Last time I saw him was at the Bowling Green Hot Rod Reunion about 5 years ago. He was one of the honorees. Quite a guy. He'll be missed. |

Re: Chuck Nelson Passes Away
Met Chuck Nelson at Indy in 1990. He was very polite and well dressed as he stood in front of my car and suggested I might never want to bring my Camaro to Division 4 as a
SS/BA car unless it had an aluminum block in it. I think my old friend Jim Hale put him up to that. Chuck also looked out for other people too. Once, in Atlanta, Joe Tech was having fun with a giant blue baby bottle with a huge nipple on it. He would poke it towards a racers face at the slightest hint of disagreement with an officials opinion. Chuck probably saved Joe Tech from being involved in a potentially dangerous physical altercation when he suggested Joe might want to consider quitting that behavior. I never took the car to Division 4. RIP Chuck. |
