Some of the best rivalries...

So what are some of the best rivalries you've seen over the years...can be from any sportsman class all the way up to the pros.

If you haven't seen this rivalry play out on the track you should make the point to watch it unfold at a race....it is intense beyond description; just doesn't get the exposure of one like Enders/Anderson.

Also, the short lived WJ/Connally rivalry was entertaining...

For those of us with IHRA roots the Scotty Cannon/Shannon Jenkins wars. I was at 411 Dragway (Seymour TN) when Robbie Vandergriff made the maiden runs on Jim Bryant's 57 Chevy(it was solid white, before the yellow paint and "Thundercraft"...to see the Pro Mod evolution to today's cars is amazing and there were a lot of entertaining rivalries along the way with Scotty/Shannon being the most famous.

Re: Some of the best rivalries...

On the Pro side I would offer Big Daddy vs Shirley. And how about Lee Shepherd vs Bob Glidden, too. Shepherd was awfully tough. WJ vs The Wayne County team.

On the sportsman side I remember the free-for-all in Top Stock in IHRA. It was everybody vs everybody, at least from this fans perspective. That class was FANtastic!!

In Top Sportsman I remember the race to be the first in the 7's.....Charles Carpenter in his '55, Bob Riolo-I think in a green '56- in his shoebox, and Rob Vandergriff in his '57. I was at Rockingham when Vandergriff went 7.01, quickest run ever at that date. Every week I would check out all the magazines to read about which one may have been the first to get there.

Kinda seemed to be a rivalry between Harry Holton's West Coast Hemi's group and Bucky about 10 years ago.

I recall in the points races here SS/CA was pretty stout with Butch Williams vs Smith&McCurdy vs Steve Taylor circa 1987ish....

Pro Mod was Nitrous vs Blowers. Then the turbos came in.....

Alky funny car for a long time it's been Ace vs The Field. I don't remember when it hasn't been Ace vs The Field, really. Pat Austin was strong for a while...

Glidden vs Shepherd for sure. The only way Glidden could ever get around Lee's holeshot was to spray him. Cheater finally got caught.

Don't think that Bob Glidden was caught spraying. That was one of his boys (Rusty?).

I'm pretty sure that it was Billy Glidden that got caught using nitrous...

Yeah maybe he wasn't caught spraying but to get around Lee's holeshots he definantly was spraying...ala jumping out of his wrecked car to coverup his intake/carbs/motor in Atlanta.

Like others don't cover their manifolds, yea right. You obviously don't know crap about Glidden.

Ha! Great thread here! Ole Glidden got his head cut completely off by Shepherd many times! Biondo, Richardson, Bertozi, etc.. are all good!

Re: Some of the best rivalries...

I'm pretty sure Bob took the car away from the boys when he found out they were spraying. They never did actually get caught, but Rusty did make it public knowledge that they were spraying and how it was hidden.

Or other Pro Stock racers. They all pretty much keep stuff covered up. Anybody that would tell something like that about Bob Glidden knows nothing about him. It's sad someone would make an accusation like that.

And I think it was Billy, not Rusty.

I agree with Ed; a few that like to flap their lips.

It was both kids that did it. They told Bob that others were doing it and Bob told them there was no way it could be hidden.
The kids proved him wrong; Rusty drove the car to a few races and qualified in the top. Bob told NHRA to show them what was taking place; it appears that NHRA had turned their heads away and at the end Bob was the one that paid the consequences.

After that, there was a Yellow Firebird that had an explosion and suddenly there was a break-in in a shop on the town of Fairfield, Illinois.

I have enjoyed the pleasure of talking to Bob and he has always been a nice guy and have even shared some of his knowledge. Bob can make power on any engine and he demonstrated it when he raced the Plymouth Arrow with the small block.

This is not taking away from Lee Shepperd; great driver and also a great cylinder head porter. Sad to say, but our sport lost many innovators in the class such as Lee, Don Carlton and John Hagen.

After re-reading the story again, you are correct, it was both of Bob's sons that were the ones who installed it on the Probe P/S at the time, and Rusty was the driver...then the breakin happened, and shortly after Jerry Eckman's team was caught using it.

Yes both were smart however Lee was a hell of a lot better driver. Holeshotted Bob pretty much every time they raced and Bob would sometimes catch him right at the traps after spraying him with NOS. Go back and watch the old footage to see for yourself. Happy Holidays!!

Some of us have already called you out on this Glidden slander, you must think like many who believe a lie repeated often enough is the truth. There's no doubt Lee was an outstanding driver so why not just stick with praising him and lay off Bill....

You got to quit sniffing NOS...nobody is taking away from Lee Shepherd's driving.
Grow up and quit making unsubstantiated accusations.
I will bet you would not have the slightest idea on how a car behaves with Nitrous either at launch or top end.
