If that one is off of normans car it was fab up by patterson. If you look it is two pieces put together. If I remember right if you get a quadrajet from a pontiac then adapt it to the 4gc opening. Tom

Re: 4GC Air Cleaner base

Ed... That is the standard base from an OEM open element HP air filter assembly. It came on Quadrajet and Holley performance applications 1966-69. Someone has done a clean job of making it work with the 4GC, adapter ring and fuel inlet tube. You most likely will have to make your own from the picture. If you need a base, try Corvette Central or Classic Industries. I hope this helps.

Re: 4GC Air Cleaner base

All I know is that if it not a factory air cleaner base,it can not be higher than the choke horn (meaning if you put a strait edge cross it,the choke horn has to hit it.) had to take it off in the 4th round after they saw it when I was getting fuel checked, another UN-written rule, that was in stock

for super stock
AIR CLEANERS
Optional. If used, air cleaner must be OEM automotive or retain
OEM configuration. Air-cleaner base may be cut or trimmed, but
welding, bolting, riveting, epoxying, or any other form of fabrication
prohibited. Ram tubes, velocity stacks, or other than stock-type
base plates or ducting prohibited. Cooling holes prohibited in
radiator side panels, etc. Factory air cleaners and/or scoops that fit
through hood must be affixed to carburetor as per OEM only.

What is particularly appealing about this base?

If we designed a CFD base specifically for the 4GC, would you be able to use it?

If that's the case then alot of air cleaners I've seen need to go in the trash.

If it can be used, I'll utilize the CFD programs and design a 4GC base prototype that can be dyno/track tested next week.

My guess would be that if it did not come on that particular combo or carb than your not suppose to use it.

I have several NEW bases and adaptors to make this type of set up almost the exact thing in the picture---$40 shipped UPS to your door-- let me know by PM please if anyone has interest in them--- you will have to fabricate the attaching rods to hold the base in place but that should'nt be a problem---we made one up in less than an hour

Re: 4GC Air Cleaner base

The written rule does not specifically exclude an adapter that is simply sandwiched between the air horn and the air cleaner base. For example, Caddy Sevilles, etc. used a riser type adapter, although it did not change the mounting diameter. Now you just need to get NHRA to follow your logic. . .

anyone have one of these for a rochester?? I would like to have one.

Re: 4GC Air Cleaner base

Late 70's/early 80's small block Chevy pick-ups used an adapter/spacer ring right below the air cleaner base. It was about 3 inches high with a tube for a crankcase vent hose. That would lift things up, but then hood clearance might be an issue.

Re: 4GC Air Cleaner base

Yes, the pickup adapter was taller than the Sevilles used. What would be needed here is essentially a slice of a big steel funnel to change the diameter more than to raise it up.

Re: 4GC Air Cleaner base

I actually found a Nascar air cleaner base and hacked it up to a 69 camaro cowl air cleaner outer ring and bolted it together. Looked somewhat factory for the 69 camaro once the rubber seal and ring were mated to it. Who knows if it worked, as I never got that far into testing it.

If there's any question about your base then pull it off when you exit the track and before you get to fuel check. From what I've seen fuel check is usually some distance from the track exit. I see people that win A LOT get out of their vehicles and take wind readings after every run 50 feet from the track exit ever. Why not then just pop the hood and pitch it in the trunk.

I have a factory 57 Chevy 283/220 ,4gc base,that I used on my stocker
back in the very early seventies. Even though I am a bit sentimental
about it, I would sell it to someone that would use it for stock or super stock racing. Just PM me. ed

I made my first qualifing hit this week in gainsville without the base and my car went 7.54and a 12.12. On the second hit I installed the $40 base plate and my car went a 7.46 and 12.03. best 40 bucks i think i ever spent. I was having some issues with rpms so I was only going to the 1000 ft butThere is a solid tenth in the long track with one of these bases. This test was on my 283 chevy 2

Re: 4GC Air Cleaner base

OK --HOLD OFF on the bases for a second I have promises for all of them at this point --trying to get some more made up as we speak---will keep everyone informed---thank you for your interest---if you still want one please email me @ rull2843@yahoo.com and I will get back to you as to when more will be available-- Some have asked if these will fit a Holley/QuadraJet/Thermoquad-- carb--- I'm not making any promises but these are the measurements of the bases
14 inches ODof the pan
1 3/8 inches high maximum height of the pan
5 1/8 inches ID of the center hole in the pan
5 1/8 inches OD down to 4 7/32inches ID of the spacer that goes in the pan
approx 1 inch height of the spacer installed - so it raises the air pan up from the carb 1 inch
not sure if linkage/fuel inlets etc will fit other than a 4GC you will have to figure that out !!!
Thanx FED387

Re: 4GC Air Cleaner base

OK---I will have more in stock end of next week-- ALSO for anybody that wants to use one of these on a Holley/ Quadra Jet/ Thermo Quad carb I have a limited amount of risers that will space the air pan up/off from the carb to clear any linkage fuel line problems that might arise---they are 5 1/8 inch inside diameter & they will be in 1/2 inch increments that is 1/2 high---1inch high ---1 1/2 inch high ---2 inch high---these will fit directly to the base plate and sit on top of the carb---Thanx FED 387

Hi Philbilly, How did you secure it to your carb? Thanks

philbilly 02-26-2013 12:19 PM

Re: 4GC Air Cleaner base

I drilled four small holes at the position of the valve cover T. I zip tied at first but have carb springs that attach it. Seems to hold and easily removed
