Some guys ran on Thursday and or Friday and did not run in the eliminator. There was no qualifying. It was ramdom pairing.

I think what Jeff wanted to know was more about any records that were set, not how the racing itself went.

Gary Summers was taking both a stocker and a superstocker apart. I know Captain Jack was tearing down too. Don't know about any others I was on the way to Orlando.
I understand the Mustang tore down but did not run. Don't know which class.

Re: Records, Etc @ Gainesville

Although there is no qualifying at an open there is always a sheet hanging on the NHRA trailer. With all the interest and thousands invested by racers why is it impossible to post that sheet. I looked at the sheets at the Dutch this year and would have taken a picture of them if I knew it was the last time I would ever see them. I spoke with a SS racer in the staging lanes and we planned to exchange phone Nos later in the pits but I never found him and can't remember his name.

Re: Records, Etc @ Gainesville

there was a silver mustang (could have been the varsity mustang?) i thinjk it was an a/sa. Sorry they are cool and all but i got all confused...cause they all look the same!!!!

And there was a cool late fifties/ early sixties full size chevy wagon 283 auto stocker. He had record holder stickers dating from the 80's all down the quarter panels. did the tear down and re-install by himself, got it back up a running just before dark. well done man.

the track was seriously slippery. the hemi cars left after a couple of runs spinning in the 50's. There was a crazy launching new stang stick car that seemed like he has 9:1 gears in the rear it wouldnt even react it spun so bad!

i saw a U/SA dodge spin...

the thunderbird ss stick car was awesome, i think he was hasing the tires for the first ten feet then was near verticle each pass.

there were many R's on windows but only a couple that i saw in tear down.

by the third round of qualifying walking the lanes out of the groove was stickier than in the groove. it was my first NHRA event, and i left there a bit disappointed to say the least.

apologies that i cant add the names, you just should been there! LOL

...and thank you to Mrs. Lewis for the excellent meals, the fijitas were the best i have ever had.

At least we had the PRI show to entertain us!

and by the way ...25 years ago we set the first NHRA record in the wagon T/SA at indy in 1987 !!!!!!

joe & son were there but spun about 200 foot... barton was pedalling one like a funny car.

Jim when I picked up the car today. Some guy asked me, how many of those darn Neons I had in that trailer? He said every time he looked at the track there was a neon going down it. LOL. I told him he would have seen more if I didn't get a flat on the truck on the way down, plus they shut it down for 45 minutes to re-prep the starting line.
I only got 9 runs in that day. Wait it was actually 10. LOL
I used almost 5 gallons of C12

From what I heard you were about the only one who could hook on that track. Glad I went to the PRI instead! Jim

Re: Records, Etc @ Gainesville

The scheduling conflict with the PRI Show made this difficult for me, because the original timeline for the Combo on Saturday showed NO time-trials, just first round at 0900. I had decided to do the show on Thursday and the race on Friday and Saturday, which was easier for me at the time. I would have preferred all three days at Gainesville, but this was my first (and now last) PRI at Orlando. I wish I had more time to visit with everyone.

Not really sure why the 'wagon didn't run better, but I'll figure that out next year. Changed a few things for this race and they didn't work! I hadn't been to Gainesville in 22 years, so I was looking forward to actually racing here. The event staff seemed to spend a great deal of time prepping the track, and I know most of the high-horsepower cars had traction issues, but it wasn't because the crew didn't make an effort.

I had a great time! The 1400 mile round-trip will finish on Tuesday (I hope!), and other than some aggravating issues with the Suburban, it's been uneventful. I must be a glutton for punishment, but I'm looking forward to doing this again in the not-too-distant future.

Lew, Didn't see you had called until yesterday! Sorry! I left PRI at 3:30 on Thursday. Was there early and had enough fun for one day. Sorry you couldn't make the dinner Friday night. We had right at 30 people this year. Jim

Record not listed like the others and the "Congrats Chris..." thread indicated he ran a 8.74 which would have mean't horsepower today. Strange...

But a shout-out to all the new record holders, especially Art Leong. Art is always flogging that Neon, way to go Buddy.

I was not there. But did anyone notice if there was problems with other classes other than S/SS? I wonder what the problem was? Lack of attention? Wrong spray? What was it? I hope that there is a race next year with the PRI show going away. I hope the division works to fix the problems. We will see.

Re: Records, Etc @ Gainesville

It appears NHRA's tracks are allowed to use what ever traction compound they want. One would think that would be an enforced requirement.....I don't know the history on the compounds like some of the other racers on here, but the VHT is said to be the best. I had never ran my car outside of Div 3 until this race. I am told D3 tracks only use VHT. Gainesville says they used a VP product.

I can second the track conditions for Jason. I was behind him on one pass. And he spun so bad I thought he had to have broke something and oiled the tires. I shut off in the water box and thought there would be a cleanup.
Even I was having traction problems. But not near as bad.

I have talked to bracket racers and some lower powered stick cars that say they can't tell the difference between VP and VHT. Stock and Super Stock converters hit much harder, so we have problems where weekend bracket racers won't. I wish NHRA would require VHT at all member tracks.

Robert Simpson 12-05-2012 12:32 PM

Re: Records, Etc @ Gainesville

I agree with everything that is being said. Sad that the tracks can't get on the same page. When someone spun so bad like they did, did the personell or Dir try and do anything about it? Did they stop anyone and try and make the track better? If not then shame on them. Sorry this happened. We don't get many open events here in Div 2. Hopefully this will get fixed and we can grow these events.

I can't believe this is not talked about more than it is....I was told that the VHT is roughly twice as expensive as the VP product....but the racers in Division 3 deserved a consistent race track from place to place....It was really good all year at every track.....

I'm still trying to get everybodys record runs as if i dont get them they will npt be in the end of year stats. I'm trying to get the list. A total of 39 cars where there for the combo, 25 seen rd 1 ,so far all i have is elimination numbers, thats it, might be all that gets into stats. One time i wish the internet had been working down there so 1320go.com could of been showing runs.

I think most S/SS guys would pay another $5.00 for a tech card to offset the difference in cost. I know I would.

Dan Lattimore 12-05-2012 01:37 PM

Re: Records, Etc @ Gainesville

Wasn't going to say anything but here's my 2 cents anyway. I was one of the guys that drove two thousand miles with the hopes of touching the record a little. The weather was beautiful and around 900 ft. We walked the starting line and there was very little tackiness unlike the little country track we just came from that used VHT and knew how to use it to the point it will literally pull your shoes off. The turnout was very weak in both S and SS then add in the terrible starting line conditions ( although it had it's moments ) and you have a bad taste for both the promoter and the racer and I'm not sure the promoter really gets it, a lot of them don't understand class cars. Do they really not wonder why all the Hemi guys and half the field left after driving a couple thousand miles. In defense of the guys on the starting line, they saw that most of the class guys were spinning, with some blowing the tires off and did try to help and even asked what they could do differently. But I'm afraid due to lack of knowledge and the use of VP without the forgiveness of VHT it was fruitless. I watched Brian blow the tires off his D/SA Firebird so bad I saw daylight under the tires, even went over to see if he broke something. Got to give him extra credit for winning the race, I bet his heart was in his throat each time he hit it.---------

Ed, I didn't want to say that but certainly after traveling great distances....and you try to get down the track and it's an ice rink......most of us would anti up for the VHT truck to stop by....

Looks like the division director makes that call....I know ours did....even the tracks that were on something else were changed for the divisional races.....I'm not trying to attack other products but the Division 3 tracks were very good for our cars....so I hope it continues....

Agreed, the D3 tracks were great this year.

I would definitely pony up some extra for good track prep if it comes to that.

Made 2 trips from Indy to Atco this season to race on a surface that was comparable to a shop floor. A lot of wasted time and money there.

Do you really want to give NHRA more ideas for fees and "enhancements" when we already pay sanctioning bodies to race with them? It reminds me of teachers going to work but having to buy school supplies to do their job because the school won't provide everything they need. Do you expect to bring your own pillow and blanket when checking into a hotel?
