Moose,
1965 Chevrolet Engines (Biscayne, BelAir, Impala, Impala Super Sport and Caprice) Typical NHRA Class for Biscyane 2-Door Sedan 'Post-Car' The 'base car' was the Biscayne, * BelAir Sedan was 10 lbs. heavier * Impala Coupe was 90 lbs. heavier * Impala Super Sport Coupe was 135 lbs. heavier * Production of the '409' was shut down early in mid-year production. 283/220 HP.........H/S 327/250 HP.........F/S 327/300 HP.........E/S 396/325 HP.........D/S 409/340 HP.........C/S 409/400 HP.........A/S The 1965 Impala Coupe #3570 lbs. with the 327/300 HP was a perfect fit into E/S in 1965. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/a...0&d=1228340129 |

Re: 1965 New Cars and NHRA Classes
Good Hunting........ Hemi Dart Dave
The 409 last came off the production line on February 1, 1965 - but still a production total of 2828 escaped out of GM. The 409/400 HP had a 'special loud noise' at the track, with big tube headers. With 4.56 gears, Headers, 7" Slicks and a good driver (easing off the line), they were one tough combination, and a decent street-strip car could run low 13.00's. But the lighter 396 engine (90 lbs.) was the way to go for 1965, especially on the street. The 396/325 HP for 1965 with the correct 'cheater camshaft' was a decent street-strip car. Production numbers for a 1965 Impala Super Sport with the 396/325 HP engine, an astounding 55,499. |

Re: 1965 New Cars and NHRA Classes
It seems back in 1965, every Military guy bought a Tubro-Jet 396 when he got of out of the service.
I still remember a dark-blue 1965 Impala Sport Coupe 396 in our neighborhood, that the owner always referred to his car as being a "396 Turbo-Jet / Posi". Power-brake burn-outs all over the place, was the normal daily routine. It never did much at the Drag Strip (D/SA), but in the local area, it was a nice street machine. The 'standard' automatic transmission was 2-speed Power-Glide. |

The Malibu 327/250 HP was desired for the drag strip over the Malibu SS 327/250 HP, as the basic 1965 Malibu weighed approximately 62 lbs. less than the 1965 Malibu SS. http://www.autolit.net/Graphics/0805/mw4198.jpg |

1965 Chevelle 300 (2-Door Station Wagon). A very light car at #3304 lbs. and with an automatic.
The 'basic'................283/220 HP engine with the 2-Speed Powerglide got you into..........H/SA in 1965......(15.00 - 15.69 Wt/Hp) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 'performance'....327/250 HP engine with the 2-Speed Powerglide got you into..........F/SA in 1965.....(12.50 - 13.99 Wt/Hp) In 1968, these cars were highly desired, as they fit 'nicely' into K/SA (13.00 - 13.99 Wt/Hp). I do remember this combination in a car called "Mr. Magoo". Ran 14.40's in 1968/1969 and eventually got down to 14.10's, and won a bunch of Class Trophies in (1968 K/SA), (1969 L/SA) and (1970/1971 M/SA) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 'high performance'....327/300 HP engine with the 4-speed got you into.......................C/S in 1965........(10.60 - 11.29 Wt/Hp) Not a desirable combination for 1968, as it put you on the wrong end of F/Stock (10.50 - 10.99 Wt/Hp). But a nice 'Street Sleeper' with a Hurst-shifted 4-Speed, 4.10 Gears, and good free-flowing exhaust system with Cherry Bombs. http://ts2.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.48490...57577&pid=15.1 |

Nice Sales Brochure.........Mr. Moose,
The 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS 327/350 HP (Car Weight, #3165 lbs. = 9.04 Wt/HP) Found in A/Stock (8.70 - 9.49 Wt/Hp) in 1965. Take a basic Malibu SS 327/350 HP, add Cyclone Headers, 4.56 Gears, some mild suspension tweaks, 7" slicks and some timing adjustments. Your steet car could pull down 13.60's @ 105 MPH In 1968, these cars were highy desirable for C/Stock (9.00 - 9.49 Wt/Hp) |

In 1966, the Corvette Coupe with the 327/300 HP would be classed in C/SA (9.50 - 10.59 Wt/Hp), based upon shipping weight. Along with the dominant 1962 Plymouth Sport Fury's 383/343 HP and Dodge Model #440 383/343 HP cars. 1966 NHRA C/SA Class Record = 12.92 |

Re: 1965 New Cars and NHRA Classes
The 1965 Chevelle 4-Door Station Wagons (#3420 lbs.) started to become popular
at the drag strips in 1968, when the NHRA re-set the class breaks. I believe the 327/300 HP 'automatic' cars fell nicely into (11.00 - 11.49 Wt/Hp) 1968. 1968.......G/SA 1969........H/SA 1970........ Re: 1965 New Cars and NHRA Classes
How popular was the 1965 Chevelle 4-Door 327/250 HP Station Wagon in 1979.
A much desired combination, even after the NHRA re-factored them to 265 HP. Joe Kenney, the 1979 and 1980 Sportsnationals Super/Stock Winner. http://www.doverdragstrip.com/phpBB3...2bd670f7bd3bed |
