What car did you own, and would give anything to have back
While posting a picture of my daily driver, with another car in the background, that I gave to my girlfriend thinking I got the best of it since I could still drive it and she garaged it.. But then she sold it... Ouch..I liked it a lot. But I can live without it. But it got me thinking...
What car did you have that you would give anything to have back again? And why/how did it get out of your prized possesion in the first place? Mine was a 1956 Cheverolet Belair 2 door hard top, with a monster 283. Jahns pistons, Isky E3 cam, dual quads, 327/350 heads. I built the engine and had to eye brow the pistons by hand with an air grinder. I had 590/15s on front an 860/15s on back. I couldnt keep a powerglide in it, and couldn't afford a stick change over at that time. So when I had beaten all of the other hot cars around, including 273 Barracuddas, and 289 mustangs, and I got tired of changing the bands in the powerglide I sold the whole shebang for $600 in 1966 Man I wish I had that car back. Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
My 3rd car, at about 21years old was a 1969 COPO Chevelle. Had a 427 435 hp motor with a four speed. Look like an SS Chevelle without the markings. At that age and the time, I did not know what I had. Found out years later, still had the VIN, and then found out what I had

Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
I was really stupid and could name a couple but the one I'd really like to have back was my 72 grand torino sport, factory fastback with buckets, console and hood scoop. Pulled the 351C 2bbl and dropped in a 69 428cj/c6. With 3:1 rear it would squat until about 15mph then light up the right rear. 13.46 at 104mph in the quarter, that was fast back then!
(would also press you into the seat when you floored it at 100mph on the highway) (Edit: sold for $500 in 84) Or, my 65 notch mustang I beat the inner shock towers out to fit a 351C/fmx, was faster bogging with the 3.50 gear then when I put in the 3.91's (and lincoln locker) out of a pickup and smoked them continually. (Edit: traded in 82) Damn, I'm depressed now! LOL |
Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba

Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
I've owned many cars over the years and some of them hold a special place in my heart. I have pictures of some of them on my facebook page in the photo section. My first car was a '59 Ford Galaxie 2dr hdtp. Next came a '63 Ford Galaxie 500 with a 406, then I put in a 427.
There would actually be two that I would want back though. First choice would be my '65 Chevelle 2dr station wagon. I built it up with a 327, 4-spd, and a 4.10 12-bolt posi rearend. Wound up trading it for a Chevy van when I started my carpet installation business. The other one I would want back would be my '71 LT-1 Corvette T-top. It was steel cities grey in color. Sold it because I didn't get to drive it as much as I wanted. I was too busy between my business, teching at three dragstrips and traveling with NHRA. Travis |
Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
In high school had a 69 chevelle ss 396/325 4 spd also 70 corvette 454 4 spd. Both good cars had a lot of fun with both still wish I keep them. But back then you always had to sell one to get money to buy and other.

Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
May surprise my fellow Mopar enthusiasts and while my 69 Dart Swinger 340 is a close second I had a 67 SS396 (325) Chevelle that I simply loved. Still love the simple lines of the 67 Chevelle.

Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
I had the first '63 stingray to hit the streets in SoCal. $4848.00 out the door. Got it in Oct of '62. Best time was 12.90 @ 106 which was quicker than the national record at that time. I got to race Gas Rhonda in the first Cobra to hit the track in early '63. I could not beat that cobra. Traded it in after a year for a '64 mopar. Wanted to go faster but couldn't afford to keep up with the factory guys.

It was a car club car I bought from my Uncle. ...When you bought or sold the car ,you had to sell it to another member, I was the 34TH owner ! That car was fast enough to smoke a new Z28 on the street in '69. and kept up with all but a few of the stock muscle cars. |

Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
Great topic!
For me it was a 1970 Chevelle I had when I was in my early 20's, After building a 650hp oval port 454, M 21, Centerforce clutch, I drove it down the street with open headers to the muffler shop. When the car was done I idled it out onto the street, revved her up, dumped the clutch and started rowing the gears. About the time I slammed it in 3rd, the valve guide hung a valve, making noises like it was coming UN-hinged. I pushed in the clutch and shut the key off! Steering wheel locked! Skidding, sliding, I went off the street and drove right between my buddies body shop and his huge sign! I'm sure if it happened to me to day I would have a heart attack. Heart rate was well past the red line! This was a fun car, it was the reason I bought my first open car trailer. I broke the darn thing every time I took it to the track. I had a wrecking yard worth of broken 4 speeds, twisted drive shafts, you name it. I learn a lot and sold it for a real race car....... only problem is it started this racing bug that I have yet to get rid of! |
Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
I bought a red 340HP split window in November '62, two weeks before I turned 21.
The only reason I'd like it back would be to sell it. It was a fun ride but one Corvette was enough. |

I wish I had my 1970 Plymouth Cuda Convertable back. It was nothing real special as it was an origonal Slant 6 car. But when I bought it, it had a 440-6 pack and a 4-speed in it. I sold it just before the market took off in the early 2000s.

This was my first race car....and I haven't had many. In a moment of domestic panic it was sacrificed - would still be the ride today if I hadn't taken leave of my senses. :(
It was a legit Shelby; I can still rattle off the vin# and unit #. Sigh.....:o |
Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
Met this girl in high school she had a 1976 Pontiac Lemans Sport. We went out for 6 years, and were gonna get married. I started fixing the car, started with a 350 2 barrel, A/C, blue on blue. When she left to go back to PA cause she got cold feet, 455, TH350, converter, supercomp headers, good exhaust, 4.10 gears, she raced it more than I did. Still talk to the girl, but the car is long gone.... that car turned me onto Pontiacs and been with them ever since. Would LOVE to find another, big car, lots of room, had soooooo much fun in that car. hmmmmmmm maybe something is on craigslist

Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
Ooooooh.... reminds me of the 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ with 455 and posi rear end. The dealer had bought it for his wife. But she wanted something bigger (hope she meant car....) Anyway it was silver with a red interior, red pinstripes, electric sun roof, the half vinyl top, and power everything. And I got a great buy on it, because it coudn't be sold as new.....
The car was a monster until I fell asleep one night driving home and I ended up bending the frame.... Never again quite the same. And I had to trade it on a 1980 Grand Prix that was a total bunch of junk. My wife had a 1974 Grand Prix 455 that wouldn't go up a hill without help, until Arlen Vanke fixed it. But the 76 was the perfect blend of beauty, power, and luxury. Arguably one of the last muscle cars. I always have regretted putting it into a ditch... Alcohol, I must unfortunately admit was involved.... David The New Hemi Guy |

1967 red Mustang GT with a 390 and a 4 speed. It was one of the few 390s that really ran well. In complete showroom trim; I would drive it to Englishtown or Connecticut Dragway, remove the hubcaps and air cleaner and run 13.80s@103+ all day long. Those were the days!

Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
It's a tough choice......
My first nice car was a '58 Pontiac and it was nice but I have to go with my my '67 GTO 2 dr Hdtp.....Loaded with just about every option and was in like new condition when I bought it in 1969 or 1970. I put Crager SS wheels on it with some nice tires.....and tuned the heck out of the Q-Jet numerous times.......She would chirp the tires hard on the 1-2 shift ( Turbo-400 Hurst dual gate shifter) and I raced it a few times on the street and never lost...... Had a lot of "issues" with it and got tired of it and sold it to young guy that pitched for the NY Yankees a few years later...... I would love to have it back and make some changes on it......Add a Tri-Power from a '66 and a 4.30 posi.......and have some fun at the car shows.... |
Re: What car did you own, and would give anything to have ba
My first new car was a 61 Chevy convertable 348 4 speed 280HP Tri Power, My dad owned a plating shop and I was the first in the area to have real Chrome Wheels. I had the whole engine chromed. That was my first track car also. Sold it in 65 to get married but it never happened. Tried to trace it down 35 years later but it hadn't been registered since the early 80's.Wish I had it today. Thx joe.
