Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all time
I was wondering if anyone would know/remember who had the Quickest and Fastest Corvette in natural SS/LA of all time. I could not find any Corvettes in SS/LA at all in Nitro Joes Stats. Maybe there are none in that combination, but must have been at some time or another. I believe the combination fits 58-60 Corvette 283 single 4GC/WCFB and powerglide.

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
Wade, I believe a long time ago John Lingenfelter had a mid 1970's style Corvette that ran in L or M, but I can't recall exactly. Needless to say if it was Lingenfelter's it was pretty fast!

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
Indeed. John Lingenfelter's then-SS/MA '73 Corvette (I think 350 cid 195-285). Ran a 10 in SS/MA WAYYYY back when. It's now a SS/IA-JA combo. Russ Linke has that car now, runs 9's in SS/JA with it. Not sure of many, if any, OLD old Corvettes in SS/LA-MA in recent memory. Don O'Malley has a '64 327/250 (or somwhere around that rating) that runs well in SS/JA and KA.

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
It seams like most of the old Corvette runners like the GT or Modified Super/Stock Classes. Guess they don't like the baby motors much, or maybe they just want to go fast! LOL I was just wondering how these cars did with that combination. Thanks fellas

Who ran the 55 vette in Superstock WAY BACK/

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
The biggest chalange you are going to have with your combo is your carb. I would start now trying to get power off now. I think Gene Bich tryed a small carb on the dyno on one of his motors and it was not good. The wcfb is the beter of the two but you will lose over fity hp with the smaller carb. The 64 283/220 up have a bigger carb and i do not think anybody has tryed to get a 63 on back to run for years. The fastest L record was held by me at 10.46 in my chevy II years ago when the hp was at 230. 2012 was the first year anybody other than me to go sub 50s. Good luck Tom

I don't think there ever was one, Wade. Ralph Feola, stick Bill Cornelius, stick Maybe Lou Cuviello? Carb is too small for the 230 hp rating |
Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
As far as Johns corvette, it was one of the first to use a lockup converter and thrasted more on it than a prostocker in the the day. Was going to be the first in the 10s at indy then broke it , rented a coptor flew back to his shop got repairs to only have a piece of silcon go into the carb. Some magazine did a story on it have it somwhere Them were the days. Tom.

Lingenfelter's Corvette in SS/LA or MA was under the OLD weight breaks. At the time my '65 Chevelle 283 Wagon was a SS/RA car. Under the new (and current) weights it's SS/NA. So you can't really compare it to todays SS/LA cars.

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
As far as the early 60,s corvette Lingenfelter and his partner from Kansas did have a early corvette superstocker, .Cant rememder his name, A friend of mine bought the car and we picked it up at O-Malleys shop .We raced the car in SS/MA with a 283 , The carb was the problem . It was a very neat racecar for back then .......

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
You were better off with the 245 hp 2x4 combo, or the 250 hp FI
|
Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
If you were to run the FI combination, could you use the newer style stuff? (TPI)? or would that move over to GT? Thanks

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
Actually, the FI referred to Stock cars.
I still don't think they know what's the plenum, the manifold, the adapter etc, in regard to changing it for S/S. Tony Janes knows more about that. |
Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
If the 2 carb deal came that year that would be the way to go. Ron Talors 57 post car runs good with the two carbs, are the specs the same? Any intake in superstock but it has to have the stock opening or trottle body not sure what the old feul injection looks like,Tom

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
Whatever happened to Steve Green? Heard the story years ago that he drove "da
Grump" crazy when he first showed up at a Nat. Event with the 'Vette. Think Bill wanted to take it home but Steve wouldn't sell! Wade...don't know if this matters, but I think there was one...if not a couple of '60 or '61 Corvettes run in Stock Elim...let's say in the last 20-25 yrs. Saw them in Dragster...Not sure of carb(s)...but think the class was something like L-M-N Stock...could a twin-carb get down that low? Not sure of trans either...might have been stick. Weren't record-holders...but were go- ing a few rounds. The fact that they were out there impressed me...if 230hp...I think that combo was de-factored (in Stock) once...might have been the reason those cars were built. Going to say these were Midwest-area racers...but not sure? I know you're Super Stock...but figured I'd mention this as it was somewhat recent. Good luck on your build... |
Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
We had the two four combination to try on our car but never got around to trying it . I remember one time while testing about a half a dozen of Griners converters we slipped a Q-jet off our Camaro onto the corvette ,now that made her a different ride !!! I remember talking with Don Holmes , who at the time was building a FI corvette stocker . Don thought he had figured out how to make one of them work ,, which we all know if any one could Don could .

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
Didn't mean to go on a Stock Elim. rant...but wanted to mention that the early Corvette
had been run in a "flat-hood" category more recently.... Yes, it's been a LONG time since one has been run in Super Stock...Dennis...about when did you run yours? Another guy who ran an early Corvette SS car was that Flip's Auto out in Minnesota. Saw it in a magazine..lt was a twin-headlamp car...not sure of the rest. Time frame was around the Stock/Super Stock restructuring...or a year or two after...about 40 years ago! On Steve Green...didn't he run a SS/LA '66 Nova after the 'Vette? |
Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
Thanks fellas, You know I origonally wanted to build the car as a stocker. But right away I found out that a 9" tire stuck 2" outside the quarter panel. That and a few other things made me finally figure out why there are no pre 61 Corvettes in Stock Eliminator. So I guess I'll build the car as nice as I can, select the engine/trans/class down the road. Not having much experience in making combinations fast, I wanted to steer clear of the fast stuff (class) out there and do my work on the dial-in side (Eliminator). That is provided I could find my way to a few tenths under the index with minimal exposure to a (in class) fast guy. LOL Do you guys think that the (small) single 4GC carb problem with this combo can yield a few tenths under the index of 11.45 to allow me to atleast get up and running?

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
We ran our corvette in the early 80,s I will see if I can gather some pictures up to get posted , It was a powder blue and white car Dunlap-Lobb -Stohm -McHugh on the side with Griner transmission-Converters on it . Long time Div. 1 olds racer Ron McHugh owened the car . I think The car ended up going to Minnisota later.....

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
The only older (1962 and earlier) 'Vette I can remember in recent time were the Abbazia brothers from Connecticut. Ran D/S and E/S with a '61, pretty sure it was a fuelie. It had quite a bit of HP taken off (much more than they asked for) and was a killer D/S car, 10.50's I think. Other than that, most Vettes of that era seemed to run Modified/Gas classes back in the day (before I was born, sadly). Robert Brinkman has a GORGEOUS '61 as a SS/CM from New Jersey nowadays. Most S/SS Corvettes now seem to be '63-'67 and '68-'73 style(s). Good luck with your project Wade, as I LOVE any car that is a departure from the norm (Not a Camaro, not a jellybean car, etc).

Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
Wade,
I think Ralph Feola ran SS/L at some point but not absolutely sure. Here is a picture of his SS/M car at Dover Dragstrip back in the day. I remember that his slapper traction bars worked well. lol http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...asSSMvette.jpg Fred |
Re: Who was the Quickest and Fastest SS/LA Corvette of all t
Which class did Marv Ripes drive John Dianna's beautiful vette in when they won a Nationals or Super Nationals back in early 70s?
