GT Combo?

Was wondering if a GT legal Chrysler engine could be used in an AMC product. Thanks in advance.

I don't believe that would be the case.
They were to totally separate and distinct manufacturers
back in the old days.
Too bad..................Interesting Thought.

IHRA allows Mopar Crate engines in AMC's for C/M Stock.

Also, there is a car with a Mopar 360 in an AMX that runs GT/DA around this area. He runs it in IHRA (not sure if he has run an NHRA race yet--car is fairly new).

So, IHRA allows it. Not sure if NHRA does or not, yet.

AMC/Jeep been part of Mopar forever now. I did ask Bruce this question last year re Gremlin and he said yes it is ok part of the corporate family. Mopar was paying contingency for class winnings for the mighty AMC's of the world also...

Reserved for foreign and domestic factory-production two-door coupes, two-door sedans, sports cars, convertibles, or station wagons with any production V-8 engine of the same make. Year of engine optional. Only those engines and/or bodies listed in the Official NHRA Stock Car Classification Guide are eligible for competition. Also see WEIGHT. Cars will be classified using the shipping weight of the body divided by the horsepower or performance rating of the engine used. Factory production rear-wheel-drive cars must have originally been equipped with a V-6 or V-8.

ENGINE
V-8 only; must be same make as body. Year optional. Engine must be listed in both the NHRA Stock Car Classification Guide and NHRA Blueprint Bulletins. Corporate engines permitted. Truck engines prohibited. Underhood modifications for engine installation prohibited (i.e., firewall, shock towers, frame, excessive cutting of
S/S
Section 11B, page 11 Super Stock/GT
cross member for clearance, etc.). All other rules as outlined under Super Stock ENGINE will apply. See General Regulations 1:2.

You can run an AMC engine in C/D/P vehicle or you can have an AMC vehicle with a C/D/P engine as they are part of the corporate family.
Chrysler bought AMC in 1987. Some people don't seem to like this or understand this (or both) but corporate mergers are just like two family mergers; you get the snot-nosed brat with the deal, no matter how good your kids are!

I see Eric beat me to the punch by one minute! I need to learn to type faster!

When I first started racing the AMX in Super Stock, I was told it would be a good platform for a GT car, I should put a Mopar 318 or 5.7 L Hemi in it. So far I have kept working on the AMC engine.

When is somebody going to put the 290" AMC into a gremlin/spirit/american (all light)
with the added advantage of the superceded 1970 small valve head with dogleg exh. ports????????
HP factor is good at 210 in stock.

Re: GT Combo?

Tom Keedle has been building a Rambler 290 for several years now and it just kept getting better for him along the way. But he's as slow as I am in getting things done.
Garrett Ghezzi has been running his 290 AMX in SS/M&L auto for quite some time now. There's a 290 AMX 4-speed due to debut soon in SS.
And the valve sizes didn't change on the 290 with the superseded cylinder heads.

Re: GT Combo?

i'd say a low hp 318 or 360 would make a nice GT car. 340 would be ok too if put in right car. Doing this would upset all the AMC folks though.

Jeff Lee 02-07-2013 07:36 PM

Re: GT Combo?

It wouldn't upset the AMC racers (maybe the cruise night dudes but BFD). But a 290 AMC is better than a 318 4bbl, and a 360 AMC is better than any 340 or 360 AMC. Maybe not the 340 T/A, but maybe yes.
And the world waits for proof....;)

a new 392 hemi may spice an AMX up a little bit.

Re: GT Combo?

what class and weight would that have to be?

Re: GT Combo?

D/S...lol.

on a more serious note though, a 318 like Sheehan or Volkman run in their GT cars would probably work well in an AMC too.

When I worked for the Los Angeles County Mechanical Department in the early-mid 1980's, we had Hornets, afew Gremlins, and 360,390,and 401 powered Matadors. They all had a Chrysler Torque Flite trans-a 727 or a 904. Made you wonder what kind of possibilities exist. Now, with the merger, does that mean we will see a Hemi powered Gremlin in SS/AA?

That old 392 would be heavier than the rest of the car.

Re: GT Combo?

Ed,
He said "new hemi" which are in the new SRT's.
I would agree, the new Chrysler, post 2008, would be interesting GT cars in a 97" wheel base AMX. And those '73 Hornets are a pretty slippery looking vehicle and I think they look kinda cool; with the right paint job.
On auto transmissions, the doors wide open as AMC used the FMX (Ford source), Turbo 400, TF 727 & 904, all with AMC specific bellhousings.
Turbo 400 was a Jeep truck item so I'm not sure that is legal but if it is, does that then allow a t-200 metric?
And I'd personally take a 290 AMC Super Stock over a 318 Super Stock.
