That's as fast or faster than what PRO STOCK was running in the late '70's!

My money is on Holbrook. he ran 8.70's with that combo in December at Gainesville. Must have waxed it up over the winter and ripped off a 8.517

And this is why my car has a 25.5 cage in it lol..

Congrates and I'm sure it will still go faster! ;)

A STOCKER that would need a throttle stop in order to run super comp... Wow

Re: Drag Racing HISTORY!...

A STOCKER that is way too fast for Stock and should be a S/S only combination....where many of the newer "factory built racecars" should be.

Is that an "as delivered" CJ or has the engine and other parts been massaged within the rules? And is that a Stock or SS?
That's damn impressive but I see the MPH and ET are a little off. That CJ has another .300 ET left in the bag by my calculations!

Comp 798 03-08-2013 09:21 PM

Re: Drag Racing HISTORY!...

None of the fast Cobra Jets are "AS DELIVERED"! Not the chassis, drive train, ignition system or EFI.

All respect goes to Ford for the production of the Cobra Jets, but some of these cars have another $50K in them.

Congratulations to Chris Holbrook, Holbrook Racing Engines, and everyone involved!

Congrats to the Holbrook Clan, hard work does pay off, Class group. Ok now NHRA please run AA/EX (Experimental)class only. The only car safe to run against them will be Bob Bender's great Big & heavy beautiful wagon. Forget Super Comp, they could compete in Comp. Isn't that close to 950hp to move that much weight. Again, this isn't New car bashing, just surprise on how fast they're approaching the 7's.Claude

You're waaaaay low, Claude.

D.Johns 03-08-2013 10:39 PM

Re: Drag Racing HISTORY!...

Like stated all the really fast CJs have been gone over. Ford/Ford Racing built and engineered one heck of a car! The racers took a product that went to 10 and made it go to 11(SpinalTap) Chris certainly is one of those guys and he's great to talk to.

So there are 10+ stocker CJs in the 8s, when will there be another manufacture in the 8s in Stock Eliminator? This time is comparable to the COPOs in SS which I think the quicker ones have been 8.6s@160(Heck it's not far from the SS CJs for that matter! 8.2s@165)?

And wow look at that 1/8mile MPH.

Bret thanks for the Thread, like usual your insights on always appreciated, I didn't want to guess since I didn't have the weight and wind condition so I stayed on the safe side. What would you estimate the real HP. Again the Holbrook group have been really on the leading edge of the envelope with those engines. Great Thread. By the way is a Mustang replacing the Corvette or is it a Grand Marquis in your racing stable. Claude

Just because it hasn't been done, doesn't make it impossible.
1320 / MPH = optimum ET
1320 / 160.58 = 8.22 ET

8.30's should be no problem.

I'll let Chris release that info; it's just not my place to say.

The Grand Marquis got a runner-up last weekend so I think I'll keep it for a while. I pulled off a "personal challenge" by running timed trials at one track, driving to another track for test runs and then returning to the original track for eliminations...and made it to the final.

Congratulations on making the fastest Mustang.(at this time) very hard work and satisfying results.
Obviously the fact it is getting closer to 7 second range is more a function of what NHRA has allowed to be called Stock/SuperStock. The question is what Modified type car or Comp type car a factory can sneak under the tent in Stock and SuperStock next with NHRA approval.

The nice part is that Chris could put plates on the CJ and drive it to work. These cars are not that far off of a Shelby GT 500.

9" tires may be the limiting factor in that.

Does anyone else see the fact that this "stocker" could have set the record in SS/AA a few years ago as just WRONG?

Dick Butler 03-09-2013 03:47 PM

Re: Drag Racing HISTORY!...

I Imagine Chad many just go along with this as a "progression" in Stock. I personally believe it is Pro stock revisited. Too Few rules, too little supervision Way too much excitement guiding the development.
Lets see excitement for an affordable Stock substitute that could give Grass Roots Jr. Stock type racing a come back...

Re: Drag Racing HISTORY!...

Dick,
I am in your camp. It's cool what they can accomplish but $140,000.00 stockers and bringing a team of two or three with you has taken most of the guys who want to run Stock and left them at home running PRO ET.
Seriously $100,000.00+ in a car to run for $800.00 at a LODRS event....actually it is pretty darn funny!!!

At least they have a hobby...... I guess.

Leaving soft, inadequate tire, etc., all factor in. The equation assumes a no-compromise race car. Still, a remarkably fast run!

Quite possibly the best line of the year (so far). Not to take anything away from the accomplishment and I'm a Ford guy but let's get real.... Stock????

Re: Drag Racing HISTORY!...

Shocker in Florida! Chris Holbrook, (AAA/SA 2013 Cobra Jet), ran three consecutive runs of 8.54/159 in eliminations while the other finalist, Drew Skillman, (AA/SA 2012 Cobra Jet), hit 8.83/155, 8.80/155 and 8.71/156. In the final round, Holbrook clocked a brutal -1.19 8.510/160.19 but Skillman hit an astonishing -1.403 8.597 at 158.06, (remember, Drew is in AA/SA), to win! Congratulations to both for a weekend of drag racing history!

By the way, Randy Hopkins' SS/AAA 2012 Cobra Jet posted an 8.229 in qualifying and ran an early shut-off -1.164 8.236 at only 149 mph after redlighting in the opening round.

Nah, it's 'Pro Modified Stock'. The call letters could be 'PMS'......okay, bad idea.
