Need help for a newbie please

We have just purchased our first stocker and have never run the class before I will be on here quite a bit with a bunch of questions as we go so thank you in advance.

First question:

The car we just bought was the car that the late great Jim Harrington drove it is I believe a natural J car with the 305. My question is where do I find the software for the fuel system is there a disk or can I download it from somewhere?

What kind of ECU does it use?

Re: Need help for a newbie please

Thank you guys very much. I do know that he built that motor and planned on calling him I was going to have a TON of questions to ask him but I figured I'd come on here and try to get some of them out of the way. I really wanted to try to understand that classification sheet I was looking at just so I am familiar. As I may or may not have mentioned I am a bracket and super class racer and I know NOTHING about class racing so I am trying to gather every bit of info I can without sucking the life out of Bud and his son's he he he

I have a year before my son is old enough to race the car so I'm trying to get as much figured out as I can now.

Mark Young,
(no, the other one from Florida)

Re: Need help for a newbie please

Does it still have an old weight sticker on window, from a previous race ? That will show you the HP and Weight he was at, for that event.

Re: Need help for a newbie please

That is the correct number that Lew posted. Give them a call they will get get you going in the right direction. I'm working on a 92 with a 350 combo and that chart is still half Greek to me also, I just do what they say!

On the left side of each Guide, you find the vehicle model descriptions, and across the top are the available engine, identified by cubic inch displacement and original, advertised horsepower rating. At the bottom of each column, you may find another number which represents the NHRA factored horsepower. This is the number used in determining classification (not the advertised), and some engines will have a different factored horsepower for Stock and Super Stock.

The numbers in the middle of the page are the power to weight factors for each model and engine combination, and identify which particular class a vehicle fits into. For instance, if the particular vehicle/engine combination you are looking at has a factor of 12.39 in Stock Eliminator, the vehicle fits in I/Stock, which according to the 2001 NHRA Rulebook, is for vehicles with a power to weight factor of between 12.00 and 12.49 pounds per horsepower.

as far as I see, to be a Z28 auto it would have to have a 350 245/268 which would make it a I/sa

shipping weight 3321 lbs div by factor hp268=12.39 = I/SA

weight of the car should be 12 x268 +170 for the driver= 3386 lbs

only the manual 5 speed Z28 came with a 305

the RS camaro came with 305 in a auto

shipping weight 3269 lbs div by factor hp 241=13.56=L/sa

weight the car should be 13.5 x241+170=3425 lbs

It may be running as a 89 iroc with 305 .with a factor of 13.46 K/SA .305/220/241 hp
hope this helps

Re: Need help for a newbie please

Ok folks we went out and tested our new (to us) stocker last night at what I believe was J weight and was able to go as fast as 7.58 what does this number translate to in the 1/4 mile?

HR9121 03-28-2013 11:42 AM

Re: Need help for a newbie please

Somewhere in the 11.80 range depending on a few variables but that's close.

Marco 03-31-2013 09:16 AM

Re: Need help for a newbie please

Thank you, This may be a stupid question but would it be reasonable to expect the car to run farther under the 1/4 mile index than the 1/8 mile index?

1.56 X the 1/8 time is the "official" formula, which depending on the variables is a good rule of thumb, think NHRA uses 1.6

You might want to talk to Bruce Parsons. No one's any better with small block Chevys. He's fast and passes tech.
