1969 Chevrolet Biscayne,,,,,,,350/255 HP Dave, knew how to pick the 'right car for the right class' better than any other Junior Stocker. The 'yellow' 69' Biscyane {#3600 lbs.} classed in N/SA in 1970. http://www.yenko.net/attachments/358504-bortman.jpg |

O/SA Sonny Freeman......nice to see him on there. That would be the
Hydrophobia wagon. I think 1971 was when he got the Pink Panther. Some of you East coast guys will remember that 1. I have a good bit of info on that car.... |

Built and maintained by Joe Simon and me Rich Biebel... Engine from T/K, Ralph Truppi and Tommy Kling Driven for the record run and backup by Ray Allen just to reduce the chances of any driver error. We were down to the last opportunity of the year to get the record and decided to ask Ray to drive it and he did. The car was sold to Rich Decola and Paul Delvecchio and in this picture it was on their ramp truck in the gas station I worked at for years.......and built and maintained the car there as well.... We ran faster than the ET record and much faster than the MPH record......and the car ran more than 2 tenths faster than the existing record on it's third pass. It was previously run as a Super Stocker.....and owned by Andy Spaziani and run with a 396/375 and ran very well in SS/E Rich Decola held the SS/J record with it......and I watched him make some runs with it in SS trim and was amazed at how much faster it was with a cam and intake change.....11.40's and that was with a flat tappet cam I think and 9 or 10 inch tires..... Our biggest disappointment was not qualifying at the 1970 SummerNationals at York and also missing the field at E-Town the following year....... Today most everyone gets to race eliminations.......Thats not how it was in the old days......and it was heartbreaking to work so hard and not get a chance to race the eliminator.....We suffered that fate everytime we ran a National event with 2 different cars......and it was the main reason I quit and did not race a car for about 10 years....... |

Rich Decola raced it for a number of years but I have no idea what happened to the car after about the mid 70's... I saw Rich a few years ago up at Lebanon Valley....He was racing a mid 80's Camaro.... He moved to NC I think.... Paul Delvecchio passed a long time ago....I saw him at many races and was sad to learn he became ill and passed.... I think he crewed with Joe Santangelo Sr. when he raced Comp.....but I am a little vague on that memory.... |

After we built the 66 HT 327/275 Chevy II and re-set the record with it, Richie decided to put a Powerglide in his car. Sometime after ,it got painted all white, and Richie lent it to Joe Kenney, who took it out to the Winternationals one year. After that Joe and Richie both got into 65 Chevelles with the 327 /250 combo. The 68 car was sold to someone in Ct. or NY I think. It was just a white Chevy II , and basically unrecognizable from it's earlier glory. I'll have to ask Richie about it next time. |
Re: 1970 NHRA National Record Holders
Mark....I was pretty sure I saw it after it was repainted white but thought I might have not had the color right.
The original paint was kind of a sore spot with me..... I wanted some Z/28 type panels painted on the original factory color....Teal Blue. After a trip to a local painter who must have inhaled too many paint fumes it had colors all over it. I fixed some of the mess he made by covering some of what he messed up and shot some clear on it.... .My buddy called it Little Multi-Color.... Tony Feil who was known for his sharp tongue.....said...."Who spit-up on your car" when he saw it.......thanks Tony.... Rich D. had an earlier Nova for a while too. SS/JA 327 He had one unique tow vehivle at one time too I think... A Checker airport limo car......8 doors.... When I worked at Crow's Head Shop we did heads for him as well as Joe Santangelo.....and many, others.... Joe Kenney was a fun guy....and we hung out at the beer stand at Sanair in 1970....Only track I was ever at that had one.....and they had a bar in the tower.... |

Re: 1970 NHRA National Record Holders
The smoldering rubber on the pavement is a tipoff that water burnouts were not commonly done yet....
If you wanted to heat up your tires you did dry burnouts.....and everyone did.....on the way up to the line....it was a bit crazy at times back there... |

Rember Sonny well. He was a hard racer with a very fast car (PINK PANTHER). I sold my crew cab and trailer,or rather traded them to him for a new crewcab Ford F350 body and frame Around the time he purchased the Plymouth. Sonny painted the rig pink ,the same color as the car. Made a good looking pair going down the road. Ran Sonny at Colonial Beach with my SS/A Cuda for the money one Sunday during a SS show. He took the money. I said he had a fast car. Jack |

Re: 1970 NHRA National Record Holders
Wonder how many of those racers on the list are still actively racing all these 45 years later? I know Cal Method(P/S), Pete Kost(F/SA) and Al Corda(E/SA) are still at it,,, how about any others?

Re: 1970 NHRA National Record Holders
I am and have been pretty actively racing since 1980 in a lot of different cars and classes.
Started in 1966 so next year will mark 50 years since I started racing! I migrated away from Stock/Super Stock many years ago but have had a couple stockers over the years... |

350/295 Muncie 4 speed...2.5 first and 4.88's Schiefer PP with a GM disc...Hurst super shifter...Hooker Headers. Lakewood bars....M&H tires...7" on 4" wide wheels....air pressure was very low but that was what many of us did to get traction... Made for a very uncomfortable ride sometimes at 112-113MPH T/K built engine.....We re-rung it ourselves at Tony Feil's....after 1 season... Pistons were Forgedtru's.....popular back then...... Tried about 3 cams..... I preferred the Lunati over 2 other GK's..... The Lunati could run more rpm without floating the valves. Stock springs had about 84lbs on the seat....! Had a lot of trouble keeping a trans in good shifting condition......stock syncros did not like missed gears....One miss and that was not good.... Springs went away and 2 MPH's were gone..... Was hard to hook in poor traction conditions with that trans and rear gear. Changing transmission first gear and maybe flywheel and or rear gear would have helped in mid summer on poor traction... We had no benefit from concrete.....most tracks were asphalt and traction was limited... All stick cars spun off the line a little....on a real bad track it spun a lot.... On a real good track you could bog it......Was very touchy..........I never stopped working on it or fixing it and we did not have much of a budget Trans....valve springs....trying different crazy setups with the slapper bars.....all added up to working on it practically every night at the gas station I worked at.... Setting that record and winning Stock Eliminator at 2 different tracks on the same weekend was a couple high points with it.... We intended to assemble it with an automatic trans at first... We thought a Turbo was going to be allowed....it was not...P/G only I just hated P/G's back then and thought they would never work.....! WRONG !!! Bernie Agaman put the same type car together and it ran very well right away.....with the P/G. Ran as fast as the Mopars of the era that ruled the class...... We would have been way better off had we ran it with a P/G..... Hindsight is 20-20 |

Rich, Which Mopars were running in H/Stock in the {10.50 to 10.99 Wt/HP Class} that were competitive. |
Re: 1970 NHRA National Record Holders
If my memory is correct the 383/343 wagons ran H/SA back then.
Joe Kenny and others ran them.... |
