Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
Looking for help (photo's) of Shirley Muldowney, on the early stuff.
1958 Chevrolet Biscayne 'red'.....348/315 HP...'3 x 2' Tri-Power'... Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
M Zagata,
Excellent.... I found photo's of her at the Montgomery Airport/Dragstrip from 1960. Jack and Shirley had a 'red' 1958 Biscayne 348/315 HP 'Tri-Power' that ran in A/Stock. Advertised as "The 'only' teenage girl-driven A/Stocker in the Northeast". That date - Tommy Ivo was there, running his 'Reddish-Orange' 'Twin Buick Engine' 'Hilborn Injected' Dragster. The old Montgomery Newpsaper states that TV Tommy Ivo ran 8.90's @ 160 MPH. Shirley Muldowney won A/Stock Class, and was beaten in the Semi-Finals of Stock Eliminator. I wonder if she was getting 'appearance' money that early in her career. http://www.nostalgicracingdecals.com...b-cart/382.jpg |

When I was racing Super Stock in 62-64 at Fonda and other tracks in the NE I don't believe she was being paid to race at those venues. Whoever posted about her hitting a timing light pole at Fonda is correct - she did. MZagata

Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
Then, the 'daily driver'... a 'red' 1963 Corvette 327/300 HP.
I believe Jack and Shirley purchased the 'red' 1963 'Split-Window Coupe' Corvette in October 1962 from Mohawk Chevrolet of out Schenectady, New York - The 'new' 1963 Sting Ray Corvette' hit the Chevrolet Dealer Showrooms in October 1962. http://image.hotrod.com/f/whereitbeg...3_corvette.jpg |
Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
Then in late-1963..... they sold the 'red' 1962 Corvette (Street/Strip Car).
And purchased another 1963 Corvette..........this time a 'black' 1963 Corvette 'Split-Window Coupe'...327/300 HP. which they turned into a ........'Street/Strip Car' that would also run in 'C/SP'. Purchased from Mohawk Chevrolet with; * L-75.................327/300 HP * 4-Speed..........M-20 'Close-Ratio' Transmission * 4.11 Gears..... w/ Posi-Traction * Added..........4.56 Gears, Headers and Slicks. Including all.........'7'.........'Monthly Powder Puff Events'. Looks to be a Coco-Cola or Pepsi Cola Trophy 'Year End Award'. Awarded to the 'driver' with the most Class Trophy wins. http://www.hemmings.com/story_image/...00-0.jpg?rev=1 |
Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
M. Zagata,
Do you remember the 1963 Ford Fairlane {289/271 HP} 'Hi-Po' car that Shirley 'matched-raced' with at, * Fonda Dragstrip * South Glens Falls * Utica-Rome * Lebanon Valley * Milton, Vermont * Tri-Cities, Endicott-Binghamton Shirley was classed in 'C/SP' with her 'black' 63' Corvette Sting-Ray 'split-window coupe' during the...... 1963 and 1964 seasons. The Ford Fairlane was classed in "C/S", and I think was owned by Phil Castronova out of Utica-Rome, New York. "Heads-Up" Match-Races, with both cars running around 13.50's. They'd each get $75.00 for a "Three-Race Guarantee" |
Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
At the beginning of 1965,,,,,,,
Shirley was given a 'black' 1963 Plymouth Fury (426/415 HP) 'Steel-Nose' Max-Wedge to race in AA/SA by Plymouth, as 'factory-backed' Top Stock Eliminator Racer. Shirley 'Match-Raced' this car against other 1962, 1963 and 1964 'Max-Wedge' Mopars, as well as 1964 and 1965 Super/Stock Hemi's. Names included; * Chuck McJury * Charlie Lendrum * Doc Burgess * Bill Rubin * Jay Miner Usual 'appearance fee'..........$150 for a Guarantee of '3' Match Races against another Super Stocker, or AA/S and/or AA/SA car. All were other 'upstate New York' 'Super/Stock' Drag-racers. For a brief period in 'early-1965', she held the East Coast 'AA/SA' National Record, when she ran a 12.12 @ 117.85 MPH at Milton, Vermont in defeating Charlie Lendrum in an 'Eastern Drag News' sponsored event. The record was later broken by Don Owen, who ran a 12.09 @ 118.38 MPH. Shirley is located at the last car ('black' 1963 Plymouth Fury, 426/415 HP' 'AA/SA' {non 'Ram-Air' - Steel-nosed car}. Photo from 1965 http://www.hemmings.com/story_image/...30-0.jpg?rev=1 The Fonda Speedway 'Drag Strip' ran through the 'infield' of an Oval Stock Crar Track. Yes, to the left was the 'Cow Palace', a meat butcher facility. This Fury was lettered with 'It's Not A Hemi' on the front fenders. http://www.hemmings.com/story_image/...00-0.jpg?rev=1 |
Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
Nico,
Shirley Muldowney did race a '1963 Plymouth Fury' {426/415 HP} in 1965. Classed in AA/SA - which was ''Factory-Dealer Sponsored' by the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Chrysler-Plymouth Dealers Association. They didn't feel she was quite 'ready' for a 1965' S/S 'Race Hemi Lightweight Car, so they gave her a 'freshened up' - '2-year old'....1963 AA/SA car. Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
In 1964 at Fonda Dragstrip
The 'black' 1963 Corvette {327/300 HP} wad classed in C/SP. One Wednesday Night (on a rain-slicked track) Shirley lost control as she came off the line, went sideways and went directly into a Telephone/Light Pole. The Corvette 'split in half' as it hit the pole, and the Fiberglass body shattered. Frustrated at the complete destruction of her Corvette, Shirley tore into the Track Owner (Ed Fuez) and Track Manager (Jim Gage) after the mishap. Shirley called Fonda Dragstrip,,,,,,,,, 'A dump, and a place where no quality drag racer would ever be caught dead running at'. http://www.hemmings.com/story_image/...30-0.jpg?rev=3 http://www.hemmings.com/story_image/...30-0.jpg?rev=3 |

Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
Rico,
This is the Intake Manifold and "3 x 2-Barrel" Carburetor' set up off of that 1958 Biscyane 348/315 HP. The Rochester Carburetors were rated at 225 CFM. Mark said that the 'port runners' were; A) Gasket matched B) Mildly ported Camshaft was an Iskendarian (Mechanical) - (1960 Stamping) A) .439 / .439 Lift ~ 317* / 317* Duration ~ 70* Overlap B) High-Rate Valve Springs Note; This Camshaft was significantly more 'aggressive' than the 1958 '348/315 HP' stock 'mechanical camshaft'. Note; Also, somewhere along the line, the 'Cast' {11.00 - 1} Factory Pistons were replaced by a set of TRW Forged {11.0 - 1} Pistons, and Grant Piston Rings. http://i.ebayimg.com/t/1958-1959-196...Zvg~~60_57.JPG |

Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
Mr. SS Wannabee,
Milton Speedway (Milton, Vermont), just North of Burlington, Vermont. This was an Eastern Drag News Track. 1/4 Mile Dragstrip {1961 thru 1972} Excellent Track and Facilities for it's time period. Did very well in the 'Summer Season'..... (early-June.... thru.........late-September) Big Cash 'pay-outs', and got many - Super/Stock, A/FX and AWB Match Races in the early-and-mid 1960's. Usually '250+' 'car counts' during its 'Hey-Day' (1962 thru 1968) Attendance and Racer participation started to fade in 1969, and by 1970 'car counts' were down to 150 or so. Shirley Muldowney ran her; 62' Corvette "C/SP' car there in........ 1962 and 1963 63' Corvette "C/SP" car there in........ 1963 and 1964 63' Plymouth Fury 'Steel-Nose' 426 Max-Wedge 'non Ram-Air' "AA/SA" car there in 1964 and 1965. 64' Corvette "A/SP' car there in.......... 1964 65' Corvette "A/SP"car there in.......... 1965 She never ran any of her Dragsters at Milton Speedway. http://bangshift.com/wp-content/uplo.../milton-ad.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...7/edn308-1.jpg |

North Hudson Dragstrip, New York
Way up there in Essex County, off of Route 9, East of Schroon Lake. Lake George Country About 150 Miles - north of Albany, New York Also, about {2 Hours} north of South Glens Falls Dragstrip. Difficult to get to before 1966. Then when the Northway {I-87} opened up, with access off of Exits 29 or 30, it was a little easier. Attracted 'drag racers' from the surrounding area; Port Henry, Ticonderoga, Lake Placid, Plattsburg, Malone and the Adirondack area. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A 'sparsley' populated Town, where about a 'dozen' local Businessmen got together and built a 1/4 Mile Dragstrip in {1964} Ran on Saturday Night's (Summertime) and Sundays (Spring and Fall). Primarily a 'local track', for the 'Far North Upstate Gearheads'. Shirley Muldowney 'drag raced' there a couple of times during the Summer 'vacation season'. They held a yearly 'Gasser Meet', and a 'Junior Fueler Dragster' event.. In the mid-60's, a handful of { B-Level } "AWB Match Race Events" and the usual 'Wheelstander' appearance during the Summer. They did hold a 'very big' Super Stock Meet every August, which was their 'highlight event of the year'. Mostly 'local' { Stockers, Modified Street Cars, and Gassers }, with a few Super Stockers and Competition cars. Car Counts in the 150+ range. Hey Day......'1965 thru 1971'. Closed in 1974. |

And she ran at Milton...and North Hudson.....cool! |
Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
Rico,
Mark did the research, and compiled the 'History' 1958 and 1959 58' Chevrolet Biscayne 348/315 HP '3 x 2 Barrel' 1958....SS/S...'Super Stock/Stick' 1959....SS/S...'Super Stock/Stick' Stock Cars that had a 'Wt/Hp' {Weight-to-Horsepower} Factor 'under' 12.60 Wt/Hp were classed in Super Stock. Back in those days, 'stock' was 'Strictly Stock'. Gear ratio's were limited to, what was only available from the factory in a dealer ordered car. No modifications for 'floor shifters', only what the car came though with from the factory. Three-Speed column shifted cars, had to maintain the 'stock' unit. No 'visible' modifications to the Carburetor or Distributor. No traction devices. Stock Tire sizes {7.50 x 14"} could be 'increased' only by 'one size' over the factory stock width. The 58' Biscyane '348/315 HP "Super Turbo-Thrust' with the 'Police Package' was the 'Hot Ticket' for 1958. With the 'optional'..Borg-Warner T-10 4-Speed with Floor Shifter, and 4.11 Gears with Posi-Traction made the 1958 Biscayne a potent car. This 'package' was capable of 15.20's @ 92 MPH - right off the 'Dealership Lot'. That's why it was labeled as the 'Street Racer Special'. 1958 and 1959 Stock Classifications http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/a...4&d=1228340106 |
Re: Shirley Muldowney 'Early Stocker'
Rico,
Utica-Rome Speewday (Vernon, New York) In Operation....1961 thru 1977 1/8 Mile Dragstrip Saturday Nights Shirley Muldowney would run there with her 63' Corvette in match races with Phil Castronovo of Utica-Rome, New York. Phil raced a 63' Ford Galaxie 'Hardtop' with a 406/405 'Tri-Power', Classed in 'B/S' {B/Stock} in 1963 and 1964. Shirley ran her 63' 'black' Corvette 327/300 HP in 'C/SP' {C/Sport} in both 1963 and 1964. Phil would go to Shirley's Home Track (Fonda Speedway Dragstrip) on Wednesday Nights. And Shirley would got to Phil's Home Track (Utica-Rome Dragway) on Saturday Nights. Usually 'Summer Match Races'. Both ran around 13.40's @ 105 MPH. http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...nes/Drag73.jpg |
