273 235HP Barracuda

I have been looking at this combination, an was wondering why more people don't utilize this combination? It has .100 domes, solid lift cam with decent lift, and a carter afb carb.

I know the came combination can be ran in valiants and darts. However, I haven't seen any of the 65-67 darts/valiants/barracudas using the combination. Could this be a decent combination?

Here in Div. 6, Bill Bushmakers daughter Angela runs a 65 Valiant with this combination, and it is a pretty strong runner.

There is a new one being finished in Div. 7 and I have
a hunch it will be very FAST!

I was thinking that it would be a killer combo. Just goes to show some of my late night research is paying off!

I remember some guy having a maroon Dart GT with a 273 and a 4 speed. Other than the Cragar SS's, it was pretty stock, and that thing would really surprise you.Another thing that was out there that was silent but deadly was a 340 4 speed Duster. Too bad more of those weren't produced. I guess 383 Road runners, 440 GTX's and the mighty Hemi got most of the attention back then.

Matt Steen runs a 273/235 Valiant in SS/K also. Has run 10.50s I believe. Matt is located in Minnesota.

Never saw a slow 340,,,back in the day, on the street,, or even up to today on the track, I was always amused by the factory "275" horsepower rating!

Think the 340 Duster...was quite common in SS/I...and SS/IA back in the day...

Re: 273 235HP Barracuda

Not just Mopars, but all across the board, many combos had a soft factory horsepower rating. Besides the fact that factories wanted to see their iron do well in class racing, there was a lot of pressure from insurance companies about cars with 425 horsepower and a 4 speed running around on the streets. The muscle cars were big sellers and the manufacturers didn't want to have a bunch of cars on the lot that were uninsureable, therefore unsellable, so that was an attempt to hide some of the facts from a negative power that was. That explains 290 horse 302's,295 horse 350's, 325 horse 396's, even the 450 horse 454. How much would any one of these engines been able to really produce on a dyno sans accessories, with optimal timimg and jetting, dyno headers, etc. anyway. What did the 440 6 pack and the LS-6 actually make, as well as scads of others? If a company actually wants to make a car, they have to be able to sell it.

How can you run a 273-235 HP in a regular Valiant? As far as I can remember that engine was only available in the Barracuda and the Dodge Dart but not in a Valiant.

If it's in the class guide (which it is) then you can run it....

A friend in high school bought a red '65 Valiant 100 2-dr with a 273-235hp 4-speed positrac. Fun car except it had the little 7 1/4" rear end.

The 235 HP 273 was a regular production option, in High school I owned a 65 Valiant Signet with the 235 273 4 speed, and there were several others in the area, both 65 & 66.

You could get the 273/235 in all the A bodies except for the wagons. I've got a 65 Valiant 2dr sedan minus engine sitting in my "on deck" circle waiting for it's turn in the garage.

Love those small motor 4-speed stocker wagons from the '60s!

How about putting a 4 speed in my O Stock 68 Chevelle wagon? 5.86 gears, the lowest first geared 4 speed I can find, and about a 12 pound flywheel. Yaa-Hooo! Only problem, who wants to pay to maintain it?

I agree! One heck of an N/Stocker

AMC or 273 ? I don't know which is better...I suspect it would be the one with the bigger carb ;-)

Carb for the 273 is pretty small. Maybe 500 cfm

It isn't bad to maintain it. Soft clutch andna good trans. Jerico with a 3.29. I am sure the G Force gkes lower, but is a quite a bit heavier.

If you want to stay in the mopar family build a 290 amc. I just built quality 273 235 hp motor and it would get crushed by a good 290 amc. The ramblers will work great and will fly.
