Were you there in 2004?
Who was in attendance for the assault on National Records on 2004 in Montgomery, Alabama. Nothing like that now. To bad.

Re: Were you there in 2004?
I WAS THERE!! Still the fastest my car has ever been. If anyone has them or knows where to get them, I would love to see qualifying sheets from that race.

Re: Were you there in 2004?
No I wasn't there...but have a question concerning #2 SS qualifier...
How does one get a '67 Nova into SS/NA...or is that a typo...wrong car, etc? NO 283's in '67 Nova, right? |
Re: Were you there in 2004?
Would anyone do it today? It seems now there is an assault on those setting records. :-(
I heard rumors people were taking weight out as scales measured heavy, and the mph numbers were short. Any truth to that? |
Re: Were you there in 2004?
Wow! If all the factory supercars were there now, and they hooked and showed their hand, wonder what the Qualifying Sheets would have looked like?

Re: Were you there in 2004?
Whats keeping people from setting records now?
|
Re: Were you there in 2004?
AHFS would be my guess
|
Re: Were you there in 2004?
AFHS...and what's the point? It's worth absolutly nada. No points, no $, just a piece of paper...and about 5-6 hrs of your time to tear it down, along with $200 in gaskets/oil to put it back together in time to try and make Rd 1 the next day.

Re: Were you there in 2004?
Stephen, if the air is that much better, then u should be running way more mph unless your running out of something :-).
No one ever set a record for the money except maybe an engine builder...anyway for the prize money. |

Re: Were you there in 2004?
I could be wrong, but AHFS came after 2004...or it was much higher (-1.40) before you got hit in mine shaft conditions!
Yes, back in the day...you use to get points for holding a National Record. Never $...unless your engine builder or transmission guy had some prior agreement (without NHRA's involvement). |
Re: Were you there in 2004?
It was well before 2004 that you used to get points for setting the record. I think the AHFS has the majority to do with people not setting records. It shouldn't matter if you get points or money to set it. It used to be a sense of pride knowing you did it. As a class racer that in itself is/was gratifying enough. We loved the tear downs. Unfortunately or maybe not unfortunately we have a great program in D-5 with combo races on both days of our opens that pay really well. So I'd rather race then tear down. I wish we could have been in Montgomery.

Re: Were you there in 2004?
2002 was better, that was the year the scales were "heavy" as well.
|
Re: Were you there in 2004?
I was there in 2003. Man was it cold, first time my car went 10.40s. Jim where did you get the arcive info it only shows 2012 right now. Scales did not work right that year, I think they where frozen. Tom

Re: Were you there in 2004?
The AHFS started in early 2001.... I know because I was one of the first inductees

Re: Were you there in 2004?
I was there. I was attempting to get the J stick record from Tony Hernandez. The weather was good enough, but I was not smart enough on the tuneup. I just could not believe that I needed those 73 jets for my 4gc! Boy was I wrong. The air was killer. I think I got 6 runs that Saturday. I was there by myself and that was a bit of a challenge, but I met some racers I had not had a chance to see race before.
I remember some guys racing in H stick, Bobby Twynam. They had a ball, but teardown was lengthy. If I remember, it was a one lane track. None of the hig HP cars wanted the left lane. Made for some tense coin tosses in the lanes for some! Yes, I would go back to go after a record again! I don't know about records. We have a book full of them. Never got any points or money for it. For us, we have been so busy with life in general it has been hard to put an A list engine together. Teardown isn't too bad for a SBC. Being quick enough, much tougher! |
Re: Were you there in 2004?
I was there in 2004. I had a better time in 2003 when I set the SS/BA record at an 8.79. We also set the GT/JA record with JW Hames at 10.26. There were so many records set it was ridiculous. I was the last guy in line to have my heads checked. I remember the sun coming up over the horizon as they started pouring mine. Those were the good old days. A race dedicated to setting records with perfect weather. The only cars at the facility were strictly Stock & Super Stock. You could make 20 runs if you wanted. I have some good video footage of the Alabama outings somewhere in the attic.

Re: Were you there in 2004?
I was there in November (the original date). It rained out and couldn't go back for the make-up date in December.

Re: Were you there in 2004?
Yes we made the pull down only to be bested by Robin Brown. We were faster by a .008 on Friday. Everyone picked up a tenth and we ran the same. We were trying everything and didn't have the tune-up for that air. Again congrats to how well Robin ran. Made for a long way home.(If you know what I mean). As far as records go we want to take it apart any chance we get. No money!! No points!! National Records YES!!!!

Re: Were you there in 2004?
Oh yeh!!! They had the legend Jimmy Bridges helping in tear down. They had so many records set that they were under staffed. Jimmie was asked to pour cyl. heads. Jimmie gave me a Double Trouble t-shirt that I still wear. He is my hero as a man and stick racer.

Re: Were you there in 2004?
I think Stacy took my Sunbird down. Had the fatest jetting we could do still shooting Ducks. Killed quite a few. He called and couldn't believe the barometer readings. We don't get that in the midwest plus we gotta breathe water.
Last fall was good very unusual. |
Re: Were you there in 2004?
was better year prior... -796 feet, 49 degrees and a 13mph tailwind... until last year was my fastest run was - 1.30 in 2003
they had no help for teardown (2nd year they was ready) we were in the barn (haha) until 6:40 am 2nd year i tore woodro down didnt race. captain jack |
Re: Were you there in 2004?
We were there in 2002....what a difference good air makes! Ran a 11.21 at the US Nats...11.00 at the Indy Fall Classic....and 10.83 at Montgomery....with no changes at all.

Re: Were you there in 2004?
Wasn't there (in person) but my truck was.
The GT/TB record set by John McIntyre was mine. Or at least, my Super Stock truck. John offered to take it as I couldn't go and I knew the place could be good. As others said, you could make lots of runs (perfect for finding the tune-up). John called me and said the air was great, the track was great and the tech guys were both great and busy. Wish I could have been there......have the paper anyway. FJ |
