Sonny Ray R.I.P. (DAD -CHAMP- FRIEND)
 

Sonny passed away this morning. A past Div.2&4 Champ, Sonny helped many racers become champions. David Rampy won his first nhra national driving Sonnys car and later became his son n law.He crewed myself and Scott Tidwell to our first comp national event wins. my prayers to Pat (wife) Chuck,Kelly and Allison.

So sorry to hear about Sonny. Remember meeting him at the Cajun Nationals. David was driving. Brittney and I will have the family in our prayers.

My condolences to all the family of Mr Sonny Ray. Mr Ray was a real gentleman, we enjoyed talking with him when he was helping David Rampy win at the Grand National many years ago, he invited us to take the pictures in the winning circle. Always had great stories and all the time to talk to us. Will miss him. Claude Ruel

One bad dude driving that ssda hemi cuda when I was a little boy.taught me a lot about driving a hemi car. You will be missed. Thx for your help and rip sonny.your favorite little kid .Joe Teuton

Sonny was truly a nice guy, a true Southern gentleman. It is sad to hear this news. God speed.

Sorry to hear about Sonny's passing on. We were friends in the early 70's when we both raced 455 Pontiacs. A real good guy. Condolences also to his Children and family. especially to son-in-law David Rampy and wife. Bob Michael.

Very sad to hear. I never met the Sonny but will always remember him in the Jerry Hurley or Collins and Jones SS/DA Hemi Cuda's.

Godspeed and I know it wont help, but I'm hoping Rambo brings it home this weekend...

Seems that Sonny and I were always going to battle at Division 4...we had back to back races...Sonny and I were in the finals of the points meet just before the Cajun Nationals...got lucky and won that race...Sonny dusted me for the big $$$ at the Cajun. He was everyone's favorite. He was fun to be around...except on the starting line! Great racer...with a great love for family and friends. Will cherish all the memories.

sad day. sonny was a hard racer and a great driver.i learned a lot about racing from sonny. god has a lot of good racers on his team we lost another in sonny.RIP mr ray! you will be missed.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I'll always remember Sonny as a real gentleman and a fierce competitor in a race car. I remember in 1981 he and I were both division super stock champs. But Sonny and his son-in-law, David, finished one ahead and the other behind me for Winston World points (3,4 & 5) with Sonny in the lead. Sonny was always open and friendly to everyone. Possibly his greatest accomplishment was the fine family he helped raise and the examples he set for them to live by.
May you rest in peace old friend.

I was given a very nice honor this past Saturday night. Mr. Ray's family was in attendance at the track I announce at, Green Valley Speedway's 3/8mi. dirt track in Glencoe, Alabama. The same grounds the drag strip was on that Sonny won many shows. His grandson came to the tower and asked me to say a few words and have a moment of silence. So just before the nights Dirt Late Model races I did just that. His grandson came up and thanked me, it was my pleasure and honor. Saw Mr. Ray race many a time back in the day, one heckuva racer.
