LIVE from Pittsburgh IHRA Nitro Jam

I arrived a little too late to get in the S/SS Combo race, but can report the semifinals of Pete D'Agnolo over a red-lighting Scott Stillings (-.003), and Gianni Cantusci taking the bye in his Stocker. It's cooled off a bit with the sun down, but don't expect any records with a low barometer of 28.7...

The Ross Family is debuting a gorgeous (goes without saying) E/SA '68 Barracuda. Sounds mean! Zac has the crate motor back in his Avenger for the weekend, while they do a little R&D on their 318 Super Stock motor.

Jims Woods of "Borrowed Money" and "The Original Tanker" fame is working Tech, and I confirmed plans with him to join NHRA Div. 3's Donald Braun as part of the Tech staff for the Northern Class Nationals at Columbus next year. Things are coming together!

Friday S/SS Combo final:
D'Agnolo three rips on the big end to go 9.440, dead-on with a zero for the W over Cantusci, who sounds like he's been fighting a little stumble off the line.

ATTENTION
Due to impending weather coming in tomorrow, it was just announced we will be running BOTH Pro-Ams TODAY. Races to be run concurrently, ie race 1 rnd 1, race 2 rnd 1, race 1 rnd 2, race 2 rnd 2, etc.

Had a little 6am shower, track crew is on top of things, sun's out. Let's roll! Busy day ahead.

This seems like a very proactive idea, but why don't they finish one race first instead of having two unfinished races possibly?

Re: LIVE from Pittsburgh IHRA Nitro Jam

My guess is they figure they can get both races done today. Otherwise I agree, why not run 1 race then the second. Either way hope they accomplish their goal.

You are probably right. With that few of cars, they probably could run three races in one day.

Re: LIVE from Pittsburgh IHRA Nitro Jam

27 stockers according to DRC - but you're right.

Michael Beard 06-01-2013 12:16 PM

Re: LIVE from Pittsburgh IHRA Nitro Jam

The idea is that guys that lose early in the first race don't have to sit around for hours and hours waiting to even start the second race, and then people would want another time trial after sitting so long whereas the guys that did well in the first race would have fresh data. First time for me, but they've done this program a couple times before when faced with similar circumstances.

No barometer, 80 degrees, humid... 'bout 3400' DA. The headwind is slowing us even more dramatically, but makes it nicer for us humans. I've got it a good tenth slower than Norwalk LODRS.

Hopefully I won't have time to report much, first round's about to start. Follow on DRC!

Okaaaay then... with some luck here and there, won first round four times. ;-) We're jammin' right along.

Re: LIVE from Pittsburgh IHRA Nitro Jam

Think I'm 10/11 so far. Got the bye into the finals of SS Saturday race. In Sunday's race, down to 5 in Super Stock and 4 in Stock.

Got a headache from the heat and playing circle track racer, but it's been cool. Got a respite now as they are doing cleanup and setup for the Nitro Jam show.

Came away with a semi in Stock, and in Super Stock a R/U and Win. Long day, but a great one! Congrats to AH Adkins, Rob Garvey, and Mike McGrath for their wins, and to double-up R/U in Stock Steve McGrath, and Richard Preiser in Super Stock.

Thanks to IHRA for being proactive, getting ahead of the weather, and a great track surface.

Thanks for the pictures and the great reports, Michael! Two races in ONE day was a monumental effort, but it shows what can be done when it needs to be!

Congratulations to all the Champions!

YEAH it was great..
Think IHRA should consider doing more of these.
Maybe have three races, adding one on Sunday.

I think it's just less uphill in some areas than others! ;) Never been fast there. Think it's at about 1100' physical altitude to boot.

Track is 1210 ft. on the flyer..

Just think if we were racing in Colorado...

DA of 4000 ft is a good day :D

It was pretty slow for my combo, it was either change converters or change classes,
I chose the one which causes less work...lol
