Jumping in to Stock or SuperStock
Well, After almost 8 months of trying, I finally sold my Top Sportsman car this past weekend. Now, I will move to the next phase of my racing career and jump into the Stock or SuperStock ranks.
I have a few criteria that I need to achieve when selecting the class and car. 1) The ability to run the operation alone without crew assistance. 2) Ability to use the car to bracket race when the urge strikes to get out on a weekend. 3) Something that will be fun 4) something that will not break the bank I am in the market for a car and have the cash (not a tire kicker). I'm just not decided yet on exactly the car or class to dive into. As an old 4 speed guy ( back in the 70's), I have this urge to look for a 4 speed stocker. I have viewed this site for a long time and have found the responses to most inquiries to be legitimate and respectful and am looking for thoughts, ideas and comments. Although I have stated (to wife and friends) that I was going to be very patient and diligent in the selection process.....I'll likely not keep this committment!!! I have spotted a 98 Firebird on Racing Junk that looks like a nice unit. MPR built stocker with a Woodro motor.Got the juices flowing!! Interested in any and all comments. Look forward to a lively conversation. Thanks in advance. John |
Re: Jumping in to Stock or SuperStock
Stick cars aren't my territory, but that sure sounds like it'd have the fun meter pegged!
Whatever route you choose, welcome aboard my friend! |
Re: Jumping in to Stock or SuperStock
This is the one I would buy if I wanted a stick car ready to unload off the trailer and run with anyone.

Thanks Michael. I'll contact you as soon as I need new lettering.
The guy I sold the T/S car to really liked the lettering. I'll pass your info on to him. |

Re: Jumping in to Stock or SuperStock
Think some of your criteria may be conflicted but that depends on what "breaks the bank" means to you. SS cars are more $$ intensive because of the gearing, cam profiles, etc necessary to run enough under the index to have some chance in a heads up situation. Stock cars are a bit more wallet friendly (generally speaking) and ones like Kevin Stubb's (which I think is advertised on RJ as well) or even the Waldo stick cars advertised there would be very competitive and are obviously proven winners. Bracket racing a Stocker stick car could be challenging due to the smaller tire and local track conditions but there are several that do just that. If you haven't already I'd suggest you subscribe to Nitro Joe's stats to see how various combinations stack up; find what really interests you and go for it. I'm sure others will chime in, everybody is welcome to the asylum.

Re: Jumping in to Stock or SuperStock
If you don't mind being the car that always gets the head start in Superstock. Get in touch with me. Very very reasonable price for complete setup.
But I warn you if you put a manual trans in you will go 3 tenths (at least) quicker. |
Re: Jumping in to Stock or SuperStock

It leaves and lands perfectly. Doesn't spin at any track I have seen him run and it won class at Indy last year without any trouble. |

Re: Jumping in to Stock or SuperStock
Kevin may still have the transmission and convertor to set the car back up as an automatic. This car was run as an automatic when it was put together. This car is very nice and you can have it set up to run stick or automatic.

To all who suggested Kevin's Camaro....I had an hour discussion with Kevin tonight. What a great guy....I rec'd quite an education on racing Stock and particularly the LS combo. |
Re: Jumping in to Stock or SuperStock
Kevin and his dad are very good people. they pay attention to every nut and bolt on the car. very very nice car inside and out. the way it runs speaks for itself.

Re: Jumping in to Stock or SuperStock
You can't go wrong with Kevin's car. It's fast in case you incur a heads up run. It's fast so you will be chasing most of the time and letting the other car have the first chance to red light. Being a stick you won't have many headsup runs with the new cars which would be about the only cars you won't be competitive with in your class. The faster cars are usually very consistent and easy to tune with the computer. The Camaro's and Trans Am's cut the air well so a head or tail wind won't be as big of a factor.
Welcome to the party, the only problem; it's toooo much Fun! |

Looking for a motor guy?

Re: Jumping in to Stock or SuperStock
LT-1 Camaro or Trans Am, can run many different ways. I would have Warren Engines supply the power. This is a great combination, these cars work very well.
