Who makes the best timing chain?

Had Cloyes BBC timing chain 6 dyno pulls, 4 passes and the thing stretched out caused a dropped valve?????:(
Is every thing just JUNK now?

X3!!! I got so sick of ill fitting chain to gear fitment along with chain stretch with the normal performance timing chain companies I went with a RollMaster that was suggested to me by my cylinder head guy. They are a bit pricey (I think I paid around $90) but there have been no issues. Great fitting and reliable.

Been using rollmasters for several years. They are very nice. No problems.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

Rollmaster,
If you have the main line done, you can purchase chain sets to compensate any slack.

Rollmaster IT IS then thank you all very much!!!

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

I prefer Rollmaster (Crane Cam's billet set) or SA Gear Ultimate Adjustable Billet Set with adjustable cam gear (Like a Jesel cam gear)

Be carefull as Cloyes came out with a copy of the SA Gear however since the cam gear is adjustable, the crank gear is NOT adjustable on the SA unit but is adjustable on the Cloyes

You can get the SA unit from Erson, Comp Cam's, and Lunati.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

Rollmaster also makes vernier adjustable timing sets.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

With the valve spring pressures and the lobe events that the traditional set ups have been seeing in recent years, I guess it's inevitible that a new chain set would be necessary. Who sells them, what are the part numbers?

I got the one I have from Scoggin Dicky in Lubbock, TX.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

Alot of cams are more aggressive, but the problem is the valve springs,it is'nt high spring pressures causing problems,it is too weak of springs that stretches your chain.
When pressure is high enough, once cam is rotating it turns easily, because you have one lobe pushing and one lobe pulling,so to speak, when spring pressure is too weak, lifters won't stay on lobes and you loose the smooth rotation and puts alot more strain on the chain.
If you don't believe me adjust one rocker on high spring pressure engine and try to rotate engine, every rocker you adjust it gets easier, when all are set does'nt take very much to rotate engine, the faster it turns the easier it gets.
As example we use at least 275lbs on sbc and at least 325 on bbc rollers this is on just common bracket engines not that aggressive of lobes.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

We've had great life out of our Cloyes sets on the stocker engines. Never a problem at all. We typically get several hundred passes out of them, and only replace them out of guilt. We use the set that has the 6 bolts on the cam gear to allow easy adjustment.

Nothing wrong with Rollmaster sets, either, good quality pieces.

If you're killing a Cloyes race set with heat treated steel gears, you have something really bad going on.

By the way, Kevin Cradduck, my partner, and the guy who runs NitroPlate, is a patent holding timing chain engineer. He'll tell you in a heart beat that chains do not stretch, the gears wear. If you ever saw what they use to pre-stretch a timing chain, you'd be pretty convinced that your engine simply won't stretch a chain.

Usually when you have a timing set go away in a very short period of time, if it is a real race set with a good roller chain and heat treated steel gears, you have some serious harmonics that are doing it. At that point, the timing set is merely the fuse in the circuit, it gives up before something else breaks.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

Alan is correct the chain doesnt stretch. Did you check the alignment of cam and crank gear? That can wear gears quickly.

Jody Lang 08-12-2013 12:54 AM

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

If the chain doesn't stretch why does installing a new chain on the old gears make the slack disappear?

If the gears wear out wouldn't the new chain be sloppy as well?

Sorry guys the chain might not stretch, but it definitely wears. Maybe it's the pin area on the chain that wears???

older racer 08-12-2013 02:14 AM

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

hi, a question ? I assume you soak the chain in can of oil for some time before installing? I had chains stretch, before, since I soaked them in can of oil, they live a lot longer.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

31 hundred series from compcams for us here. trouble free and the price is right. not sure who manufactures them and we pre-lube a ton at install...

Jim Kaekel 08-12-2013 08:51 AM

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

I'm not disputing anyone but I've used Cloyes sets with success. I've replaced chains as well to take the excessive slack out as well and after I replaced them the slack was gone. A timing chain has what seems like a couple hundred links and pins, and if they all wear just a tiny bit, it surely will create some slack.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

Ok, I got it--chains dont stretch, they just get longer with use.

As others have stated, Rollmaster which I have been using on my BBC since 2000.

That said, I have never broken a timing chain and typically go 2 full seasons, 500+ passes. Further, my current BBC makes nearly 950HP.

A stretched chain caused a valve to drop??? Could explain how this happened as I have taken apart a lot of engines over the last 38 years with stretched out or worn out timing chains and gears but never seen dropped valve because of this.

I have seen many times where guys will use stock cam bearings where a performance cam bearing should be used,

Stock cam bearings used with high lift cams and springs with a lot of seat and over the nose pressure will tend to flatten the cam bearings causing the chain to be loose.

I use a lot Cloyes Hex-A-Just both BBC and SBC and so far no dropped valves LOL.

.050 EX Valve clearance, may have contributed to it? I don't know? I make signs and decals I am not an engine builder. I was just saying what I thought may have happened with the evidence I had at face value.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

MEXJOE, you may have found your answer .050 clearence on the exhaust + loose chain, yeah that's not gonna work. Before you go out and try to find a timing chain that doesn't stretch maybe have whoever does your engines build in a bit more clearence, not trying to be a smart ***** just a suggestion.Static measurment of .050 in my opinion is not near enough add in chain slack and cam twist you have a disaster waiting to happen. Not saying an engine can't be run with this tight of clearence cause I know a few who do it but it's CLOSE! BTW been running Cloyes chains on my stuff for years, 380lbs. on the seat 10,000 RPM, no issues .050 on intake .070 on exhaust. Good luck with your engine.

Mike Taylor 3601 08-14-2013 08:59 AM

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

MEXJOE,
.050 is tight on ex,if anything goes wrong like say dowel pin breaks in cam or chain got loose/stretched it will get ex valve will get closer,in will get farther away.
Also when valvetrain is loaded(spring pressure) piston to valve will changed some,ex will lose clearance and in will gain clearance.
If this is bracket engine I would shoot for around .090-.100 clearance, this is safe number.
Yeah you can run less, but have to do so carefully, when on the edge you can fall off.
Hopefully you got lucky and did'nt do too much damage.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

What everyone calls timing chain stretch is actually wear.
Both the gear and pins will wear, based on the loads the timing set experiences from operating RPM levels and the high spring rates used in the valvetrain.

The reason I believe Rollmaster is superior to other makes is due to their use of Nitrided billet gears and their premium sets use a German Iwis chain.

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

What about link style chain sets? Ive always heard they were better than a roller style because of less harmonics being transferred through the valve train..Anyone else heard this?

I think Grumpy used to claim that back in the '70's ...

Re: Who makes the best timing chain?

In the 70s all the best Pro-Stocks,Modified Elim,Stockers and Super Stockers used aluminun nylon upper gears and link belt chains, they dampened harmonics better than steel gears .We never had a failure with the Alum-Nylon -Link-belt stuff ,and later Jesel belt drives became the norm, with the rubber belt also dampening harmonics.Bill C.

There are still some link style chain sets used for racing.
One example is the Ford Racing timing set, Part Number M-6268-F302.
