"Racing is killing Drag Racing"
Go to Competition Plus and read the arrival by Job Asher. I know some of you are not fans of his but this will hit home. NHRA Pro Show is coming to an end. All of the big money is leaving. Castrol just announced it is leaving John Force Pro Drag Racing next year. If Super Stock can put away the stripe racing and get to attracting spectators instead of turning them off it could be "the way it
was" with a couple of funny cars or dragsters being only for show. Get ready change is coming. |

Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
Michael, I spoke with someone who went to the Norwalk event to watch, and told me you couldn't believe all of the spectators. I hope the leadership of n.h.r.a. can take a hint. John Kissel

Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
Jon Asher is one of the great automobile writers and is quite right when it comes to the pro-racing. Limit Top Fuel 500inch single mag and you will not need fuel pumps that could empty an ocean in 3.5 second. Make sure that funny car bodies meet close to the manufacturers specs, same for Pro-Stock(nobody likes a blimp Camaro and let them pull the wheels. Claude Ruel

Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
Hey chris3racing,
Let's see, a year ago you were telling us that we were all doomed and Pinks All Out was the wave of the future so excuse me if I have trouble taking your most recent insight on the direction that drag racing is going. Sure, drag racing isn't what it was in the 60's but I'm not going to loose sleep over it. I'm too busy racing to spend my time dwelling on the negatives, maybe you should do the same. Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
Asher is correct, it's freaking boring.
Pro Stock racing should be today's Factory Hot Rods, not carbureted Funny Cars, and remember "Jungle Jim" Liberman's burnouts? |

One of the coolest shows I ever saw was Top Stock at Maple Grove several years ago.

Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
Do you remember when we had the night time match races at Capital Raceway and jungal Jim and the Chitown were part of the show Jungle would do the fire burn out an the next pair Chitown would do a full track burnout. That was followed by the Super Stock match races.
Yes, and the same thing can happen, the love of money and contracts killed that too. I understand all to well that as long as two people have a car there will be a race. |
Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
Yes, Tracy they will be making an announcement soon that 2014 will be the end with John Force Racing. Arons is also pulling out.

Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
The issue as I see it is that there are just too many national events. Back in the old days there were 4-5 nationals a year, TV coverage was weeks delayed on Wide World of Sports, and the teams could make a living match racing.
Now, with 23+ national events, same day TV coverage, and instant internet results, match racing is dead. Travel expenses alone are out of sight for the teams, and people don't need to go to a local track to see their hero anymore. Racing is a victim of it's own success/excess. Force may only be able to bring 2 cars and 5 transporters now. |

Just for starters .......Real Drag Racing is a quarter mile ...1320 feet... ( NFL Football is 100 yards. Arena Football is less than 100 yards ) ....need I say more. JB

Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
Am I the only one here that actually watches racing for the racing itself?
My problem is that the author is challenging racers to trade performance for entertainment. I disagree with that completely. I never watched or got into racing for match racing, showy burnouts, or people wamping the throttles ten times over. It interested me because of all the technical aspects that combine to make the runs we see so great. I've never been excited for wrecks, explosions, or bumper wheelstands where the car is off the ground completely. I do however get excited seeing record breaking runs, close racing, and full tilt NA motors as seen in Pro Stock, Comp, and Super Stock. His article just doesn't hit home for me because as a racer, I would never give up a performance gain just to put on a show, I want to win, set records, collect tropies, and have fun while constantly working on my junk to go faster. |
Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
TOP/Stk and TOP/SS were a great breath of fresh air but never got the time in front of spectators, or the promotion from the towers to inform people watching. The Racers Love it and would do it again in a heart beat if allowed or invited. I have not seen the Norwalk show but it must have been great.
Big money cannot keep backing a full year of Millionaires and their excesses forever. It will come back to basic people running basic machines. The new SS cars will be too extreme also. |

Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
IMO, the big problem with Pro Stock is that there isn't anything left to the cars that resembles "stock."
|
Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
The problem with pro stock is how much they cost not how they look.

Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
without limits on innovations added the cost is open ended. No One can play forever with an open budget....
Set Jr. Stock rules or crate, or spec built by one company and watch the excitement recur. |
Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
I think you are wrong Dick. One can go forward but not backward.

Re: "Racing is killing Drag Racing"
Cost wise its just too expensive now!

see> http://www.competitionplus.com/drag-...g-drag-racing1 Very good thoughts. And the problem is..not much going to happen until NHRA's checkbook goes into overdrawn status . AND..Who will then be the FIRST PRO- FC-TF, , PStocker or even ALKY folks ..to tell their sponsor overlords that they will now be competing to go.. slower and we need more $ to do that? |
